We own 58 acres of forest centered on a very old shale pit near Crescent Beach, Nova Scotia. Our long-term mission is to regenerate the landscape, returning all of the property to a forest in time. We hope to establish small camping compounds for family, friends and guests who would like to stay with us and enjoy the amazing scenery of Nova Scotia's beautiful South Shore.
Located just below Huey Lake, our property is watered by a stream that flows from the lake, through a series of tiny waterfalls in a gorge, through beautiful pine, maple, and oak forest down to a meandering wetland that drains into the Petite Riviere watershed.
Beavers are active in the area and have already begun the process of returning the old quarry to the wilderness. Their activities have created deep ponds where once there was a pit dug from the land for the shale that is abundant in this area. The beavers dammed and diverted the stream which has created a pond and wetland system at the lower end of the property. If you are very quiet in the early morning you may get to see Castor as he busily swims about his watery home.
Located near some of the most beautiful features of Lunenburg County, our property is a 5-minute drive from Crescent Beach, Risser's Beach Provincial Park, and Petite Riviere. Opportunities to cycle, hike, swim, canoe, kayak, surf and sail are all around us.

Want to swim at St. FX University swimming pool? Day passes are sold at the university. Of course ocean swimming at one of the 19, nearby, beautiful area beaches is totally free for all, so get wet and splash in the sea!
Sure, you can sit inside and watch one of our many DVD movies, but instead why not : explore nature, take a walk through the woods, talk to your wife, or friend, play with the kids, or throw a ball for your dog? If you want to relax, visit the golf course in town or just chill on the comfy deck. Do you want to ride, your bike on mountain trails, fish, visit a lighthouse or a petting farm? We have these close by too!
Wide-open highways make for smooth, fast, travel to places like New Glasgow, Pictou, The Cabot Trail or the ferry to PEI. (now 1/2 price) All are within an hour's drive.

We are located on the east side (sunrise) on the Cabot Trail, about 15 minutes from Ski Cape Smokey, 25 minutes from the entrance of the Cape Breton Highland National Park with over 35 well maintained hikes.
The on site restaurant, The Dancing Moose Cafe, is changing its activity starting this year (2025) and will only be open, serving breakfast for guests that stay on the property. Full a la carte breakfast is available, including our "famoose" Dutch Pannekoek. Breakfast is optional and not included in the rental fee.
There are 4 different kind of vacation rentals on the property,
The Sleeping Moose Cottage (1x), The Zzzz Moose Camping Cabins (3x) The ZzzzMoose 2.0 Camping Cabin (1x) and the Birch Plain Tower 1x).
The Sleeping Moose has a minimum of 2 nights. All other rentals can be booked for 1 night, or more of course.
Except for the Birch Plain Tower al our vacation rentals are pet friendly.

We had wonderful 4 night stay. “Littlewoods” is a beautiful set up in the woods. Everything you need is right there, fire pit, hot plate for cooking, a mini fridge, even a sink for washing up (cold water) and shower with hot water. The site is well kept and neatly set up. We’d definitely recommend it and would like to return in the future.

The weather wasn’t the greatest but with recommendations for places to cool off and a lovely rain water shower, we kept most of the heat away. Would suggest this as the perfect get away for anyone looking to explore annapolis royal or just get away from the business of day to day life! 💕

This is the best stay I have ever experienced! Chantelle has created such a fun and groovy atmosphere! Every little detail has been thought of from Q-tips to games and more! The bed was extremely comfy! The homemade cookies waiting for us upon arrival was such a welcoming touch! Being surrounded by nature was so peaceful while still having the comforts of home. The design of the home was amazing with the screened in porch and we loved staring out the gorgeous window view.
I highly highly recommend adding on the breakfast! Chantelle hand delivered the most delicious breakfast in the morning! The quiche were out of this world and all the local fresh fruit topped with flowers from their garden was just the perfect touch to this stay!

Had a very lovely experience. Even spent a day there in the pouring rain and there wasn’t a single leak inside the tent anywhere. The bed and bedding were extremely comfortable. We brought items with us but needed very little of the things we brought most things were already there. Hard to find a camping spot in the middle on the woods that has cell phone service but this site does and it was extremely good. Will definitely book again.

The location was great and the bunkie/cabin was a relaxing place to land after exploring Cape Breton during the day. Sam and Nic were always available to answer any questions we had and are incredibly friendly and welcoming hosts. I'm new to off-grid vacationing and I loved it, largely in part due to how nice Sam and Nic's place is. It's comfortable, bright and set up well. Highly recommend!

This place was amazing. From the moment you drive in the driveway you instantly know that you will be able to disconnect and unwind.
The hosts, Gary and Chantelle, along with their fur baby, Fern, went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed. They were very friendly and kind!
The location itself was wonderfully situated in the forest. The screened in porch allowed for an immersive forest experience from dawn to dusk. The place has everything you need!
BREAKFAST!!!! Oh My Goodness! Chantelle is a gifted cook/baker and you can tell! Our breakfast (delivered to our door) was money well spent! It was amazing!
I will be returning to this place again and again. I can't rave about it enough!

Was a beautiful spot. Super peaceful and Chris is a total gentleman. I slept 8 hours and woke up to coffee on the shore. Sheet Harbor is the nearest full town and a Must see! I grew up in NS but this entire experience topped anything I've seen in the province. Thanks Chris!

Weekend Trip to Moss Cottage Forest Glamping
Moss Cottage is a perfect little escape from everyday chaos. They have built a gorgeous cabin that has everything you could need to be comfortable and more. The cabin is an 8 minute walk into the woods from Chantelle’s house so there is a lot of privacy while still being able to drive into town for groceries if needed each day. The property is about a 10 minute drive from Annapolis Royal which is a great destination for a day trip. I can’t wait to visit again!

3 nights at Sally's Brook Cabins, Glamping Tent
We had an absolutely fabulous time at Sally's Brook. It's hard to describe the specialness of this property. Lisa and Glen took such good care of us. Glen gave us a little tour around some of the woods outside the "Hive" and showed us their sustainable energy set up. Lisa warmly welcomed us -- especially warmly lit the fire for the sauna (which was amazing) -- and gave us great recommendations (e.g., a local puffin tour!). We had fun hiking up the hills to our glamping tent, and Lisa also was there to give us a ride up if needed. We got a kick out of the composting toilet and loved sleeping in sheets way nicer than the ones we've got at home. For us, the Aurora Tent was a nice balance between outdoor camping and cabin life. Perfect location for start/end of the Cabot Trail.
