The Timbarra or Rocky River is an area of great beauty southeast of Tenterfield with soaring mountains cradling the river flats and undulating hills below and is a renowned cattle breeding region. The Petrie family have been in Tenterfield since 1860 and have owned properties in the valley for over 100 years. Tim’s great-grandfather was known as Rocky Jack because of his extensive holdings. Cattle are still walked up to the Timbarra Plateau property from the river properties ‘Man From Snowy River’ style. The Plateau can be seen rising above the valley to the north from the confluence of Demon Creek and the Timbarra/Rocky River. These flow along the Demon Fault which is clearly visible on a satellite map. The 3 valley properties ‘Corner Camp’, ‘Boundary’ and ‘’Pavels’ combined with ‘Timbarra Plateau’ total over 25000 acres. The whole valley was part of 2 earlier large selections averaging 100000 acres which gradually became broken up in the late 1800s/early 1990s. There is a proud timber history in the valley and the surrounding forested mountains with large sections of State Forest now transferred to Washpool National Park which abuts both the eastern and western boundaries of ‘Boundary’ (which takes its name from Boundary Creek). The eastern section of Washpool stretches across to the Clarence River, the largest eastern river in NSW. Washpool is where the Cedar King went missing and was never located. The Timbarra/Rocky River flows into the Clarence at Tabulam and then on to Grafton and out to sea at Yamba. The headwaters of the Rocky are all the way south to the Glen Innes Grafton road so the river can rise quickly if there is a downpour upstream. Interestingly when the Chinese gold miners left the Timbarra Plateau they came down with rickshaws into the Timbarra Valley then scaled the mountains to the west, near Boundary Creek, looking for their next gold diggings towards Glen Innes. The Boundary campsites at Boundary Riverside, The Cockatoo, The China Wall, and the Caves are all suitable for caravans, RVs, Camping trailers, tents and swags as is Timbarra Plateau. Corner Camp and Pavels are suitable for camping trailers, tents and swags. Boundary campsites access are all unaffected if the river rises however we will not take bookings at Corner Camp or Pavels in the likelihood of the river rising as we are committed to safety and avoiding inconvenience for guests. The Rocky is a very special place and we have campers who first came as children and are now bringing their grandchildren. We expect our guests to treat the area respectfully, and only leave footprints and tyre tracks. The valley provides wonderful scenery and settings for bushwalking, birdwatching, photography, painting, bicycle riding, swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding and canoeing, or just kicking back relaxing by the river, listening to the soothing sounds of the water, birds, and the turtles and platypus splashing, or being amazed at the mirror like images on the waters surface on a still day or the flickering light of a campfire at night and the stars above.

The Cockatoo

The Cockatoo is a picturesque private grassy area immediately adjacent to the Timbarra/Rocky River with gorgeous views to the surrounding landscape of mountains and cliffs, pasture and undulating hills.  The campsite is accessed off the public road, and is east of the China Wall campsite. The upper level is suitable for caravans, RVs and motorhomes of all sizes, and camping trailers, tents and swags. There is a slope to go down to the lower camping area immediately adjacent to the river and it is often used by campers with camping trailers. The lower area has lots of shade trees and the upper level is mostly cleared where the land is flattest but has shade from the adjoining trees. There is a pit toilet available. The Cockatoo takes its name from the cliff face to the west which has a white mark on the rock which looks like a cockatoo sitting there. The China Wall is a sheer rock wall directly opposite on the other side of the river from the Cockatoo cliff to the bend in the river. Adults are $18pp, children 5-16 years old are $10pp, children under 5 stay free. Pets are allowed but dogs must be leashed unless accompanied, and must be leashed if livestock or other campers are nearby. Fishing is also allowed providing licensed, but note that Eastern Cod are catch and release only, and any fish heads and innards are to be buried away from the campsite. Firewood is available for $15/night (20kg+) with the booking. Firewood can be purchased at the Mobil service station in Tenterfield for $18/bundle. The China Wall

The China Wall is a picturesque grassy area adjacent to the Timbarra/Rocky River with gorgeous views to the surrounding landscape of mountains and cliffs, pasture and undulating hills. The campsite is easily accessed off the public road, and is west of the Cockatoo campsite. The camp site is on the upper level immediately overlooking the river and is suitable for caravans, RVs and motorhomes of all sizes, as well as camping trailers, tents and swags. There is vehicle access along the short track to rivers edge, and it is an easy walk down.  The upper camping level is mostly cleared but has some shade from the adjoining trees as well as shade from the cliff. The Pump Paddock is a very large picturesque private grassy area immediately adjacent to the Timbarra/Rocky River with shade trees or open land and views to the surrounding mountains and is suitable for caravans, camping trailers, tents and swags. Must be self contained.  The Pump Paddock is on Corner Camp and is accessed by crossing the river to the eastern side, so is inaccessible during flooding. Corner Camp is only available during high demand at low river heights. Loved the remote isolated feel with crystal clear waters. Plenty space for kids to adventure in and to enjoy the outdoors. Toilets were clean and site were too. Plenty of fish to catch and release so make sure you pack a rod also. Or you can just sit back in the shade of the shade of the trees and cook a nice campfire meal.

Was a beautiful spot right on the river, plenty of room for our group of 4 vehicles. Sooooo peaceful, no other campers around us, cows came to visit once a day or so. Our dogs loved it, had a dip in the creek too. Will absolutely stay here again. The dirt road in was very well maintained with beautiful scenery coming down in to the valley. Could be a little tricky for larger vehicles & caravans if there was a fair bit of rain. The hosts Bill & Bronwyn were very friendly & helpful, communicating well. Our firewood delivery was exceptional, beautiful bush wood that burnt for hours. This would be a new favourite for us & we will back again. Thank you for opening your property up to us :)

We had a great weekend at Timbarra Valley Hipcamp and would definitely camp there again. It is a beautiful, secluded and peaceful spot, perfect for switching off and enjoying nature. The river was a real highlight — lovely and cool, and so refreshing during the day. A couple of things to note for future campers: our site was on a slope, which made tent setup a little tricky, so something to keep in mind if you’re in a tent. It’s also around a 1.5 hour drive on a dirt road from Drake, so come prepared and allow extra travel time. Overall, a fantastic escape if you’re after privacy, quiet surroundings and a refreshing river to enjoy.
