The Timbarra or Rocky River is an area of great beauty southeast of Tenterfield with soaring mountains cradling the river flats and undulating hills below and is a renowned cattle breeding region. The Petrie family have been in Tenterfield since 1860 and have owned properties in the valley for over 100 years. Tim’s great-grandfather was known as Rocky Jack because of his extensive holdings. Cattle are still walked up to the Timbarra Plateau property from the river properties ‘Man From Snowy River’ style. The Plateau can be seen rising above the valley to the north from the confluence of Demon Creek and the Timbarra/Rocky River. These flow along the Demon Fault which is clearly visible on a satellite map. The 3 valley properties ‘Corner Camp’, ‘Boundary’ and ‘’Pavels’ combined with ‘Timbarra Plateau’ total over 25000 acres. The whole valley was part of 2 earlier large selections averaging 100000 acres which gradually became broken up in the late 1800s/early 1990s. There is a proud timber history in the valley and the surrounding forested mountains with large sections of State Forest now transferred to Washpool National Park which abuts both the eastern and western boundaries of ‘Boundary’ (which takes its name from Boundary Creek). The National Park and Forestland State Forest can be accessed to the west via the Billirimba Fire Trail. The eastern section of Washpool stretches across to the Clarence River, the largest eastern river in NSW. Washpool is where the Cedar King went missing and was never located. The Timbarra/Rocky River flows into the Clarence at Tabulam and then on to Grafton and out to sea at Yamba. The headwaters of the Rocky are all the way south to the Glen Innes Grafton road so the river can rise quickly if there is a downpour upstream. Interestingly when the Chinese gold miners left the Timbarra Plateau they came down with rickshaws into the Timbarra Valley then scaled the mountains to the west, near Boundary Creek, looking for their next gold diggings towards Glen Innes. The Boundary campsites at Boundary Riverside, The Cockatoo, The China Wall, and the Caves are all suitable for caravans, RVs, Camping trailers, tents and swags as is Timbarra Plateau. Corner Camp and Pavels are suitable for camping trailers, tents and swags. Boundary campsites access are all unaffected if the river rises however we will not take bookings at Corner Camp or Pavels in the likelihood of the river rising as we are committed to safety and avoiding inconvenience for guests. The Rocky is a very special place and we have campers who first came as children and are now bringing their grandchildren. We expect our guests to treat the area respectfully, and only leave footprints and tyre tracks. The valley provides wonderful scenery and settings for bushwalking, birdwatching, photography, painting, bicycle riding, swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding and canoeing, or just kicking back relaxing by the river, listening to the soothing sounds of the water, birds, and the turtles and platypus splashing, or being amazed at the mirror like images on the waters surface on a still day or the flickering light of a campfire at night and the stars above.

The Cockatoo

The Cockatoo is a picturesque private grassy area immediately adjacent to the Timbarra/Rocky River with gorgeous views to the surrounding landscape of mountains and cliffs, pasture and undulating hills.  The campsite is accessed off the public road, and is east of the China Wall campsite. The upper level is suitable for caravans, RVs and motorhomes of all sizes, and camping trailers, tents and swags. There is a slope to go down to the lower camping area immediately adjacent to the river and it is often used by campers with camping trailers. The lower area has lots of shade trees and the upper level is mostly cleared where the land is flattest but has shade from the adjoining trees. There is a pit toilet available. The Cockatoo takes its name from the cliff face to the west which has a white mark on the rock which looks like a cockatoo sitting there. The China Wall is a sheer rock wall directly opposite on the other side of the river from the Cockatoo cliff to the bend in the river. Adults are $18pp, children 5-16 years old are $10pp, children under 5 stay free. Pets are allowed but dogs must be leashed unless accompanied, and must be leashed if livestock or other campers are nearby. Fishing is also allowed providing licensed, but note that Eastern Cod are catch and release only, and any fish heads and innards are to be buried away from the campsite. Firewood is available for $15/night (20kg+) with the booking. Firewood can be purchased at the Mobil service station in Tenterfield for $18/bundle. No home firewood please due to Biosecurity risk especially Red Imported Fire Ants. The Rocky is a special place and we expect our guests to treat it respectfully, removing their rubbish and not emptying any waste water from caravans/RVs/motorhomes on site or in the river. There is a dump point in Tenterfield. The China Wall

The China Wall is a picturesque grassy area adjacent to the Timbarra/Rocky River with gorgeous views to the surrounding landscape of mountains and cliffs, pasture and undulating hills. The campsite is easily accessed off the public road, and is west of the Cockatoo campsite. The camp site is on the upper level immediately overlooking the river and is suitable for caravans, RVs and motorhomes of all sizes, as well as camping trailers, tents and swags. There is vehicle access along the short track to rivers edge, and it is an easy walk down.  The upper camping level is mostly cleared but has some shade from the adjoining trees as well as shade from the cliff. There is a pit toilet available. The Cockatoo takes its name from the cliff face to the west which has a white mark on the rock which looks like a cockatoo sitting there. The Caves North - Seal Rock

The China Wall is a picturesque grassy area adjacent to the Timbarra/Rocky River with gorgeous views to the surrounding landscape of mountains and cliffs, pasture and undulating hills. The campsite is easily accessed off the public road, and is west of the Cockatoo campsite. The camp site is on the upper level immediately overlooking the river and is suitable for caravans, RVs and motorhomes of all sizes, as well as camping trailers, tents and swags. The China Wall is a sheer rock wall directly opposite on the other side of the river that goes west to east from the Cockatoo cliff to the bend in the river. We loved our stay at Timbarra Valley. The caves campground was very spacious and had great river access. The amenities were very clean and the firewood was stocked up on arrival. Seen plenty of wildlife including platypus. Will definitely be booking another trip in the near future.

There is no doubt that this place is very special and unique. Will certainly be back to stay longer next time. The directions google gave were slightly off. Google had us to drive another 5 ks to check in. We then realised the check in point was about 1 kilometre before The China Wall but no one was there so maybe have some more signage to show check in spot because we honestly thought we were lost. As it was the weekend and no one was there I guess it’s okay to just drive to the spot. I understand you like to provide your own firewood but tbh it was rather difficult to burn. We did get through the whole pile delivered but OMG it was a struggle. These 2 points are simply constructive criticism and not to offend in anyway. Perhaps send an email that you won’t be at check in so guests don’t get confused. We all enjoyed the beautiful camp and stunning and very quiet. Thank you very much.

A beautiful part of the world. Peaceful, with birds and nice views. The drive in is slow but also pretty and worth it for the end destination. Would definitely recommend this camp, wish we had longer.

Boundary Riverside Central
Great campsite under the She Oaks. Located on the grassy banks of the Rocky River. Lots of birds including Wedge tail Eagles, king Parrots, Crimson Rosellas and more. The highlight was watching the Platypus every dusk and dawn. Toilets were very well maintained and relatively close to sites. Would be a great place for canoeing and kayaking. We rode bikes along the road and walked up a ridge close to our site. Bronwyn was a welcoming host.

We absolutely loved our stay at Timbarra Valley. The beauty and solitude of the valley are truly something special, and it made for one of the best camping trips of my life. We didn’t see a single other guest during our 5 nights there, which made it feel like our own private slice of nature. Waking up to mist over the river, the clear starry nights, and the peaceful surroundings made it the perfect place to unwind and reconnect with nature. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a quiet, beautiful camping experience.

Total off-grid bliss! No neighbours, no reception, just the sound of a rushing river and the occasional moo or cow hoof stomping past. But let’s talk about the real star of the weekend — the loo with a view. Open the door, take a seat, and enjoy one of the best bathroom views in the country. Honestly, I’ve never felt so peaceful while doing my business. 10/10 would drop by again!

We had a great weekend camping on the level grassy flat with a great view of the river and surrounding mountains. It was so peaceful. We couldn't see nor hear the other campers on the property.

Such a great spot, it has everything you want in a Hipcamp! Grassy secluded site, own toilet, camp fires allowed, dogs allowed, access to the river, great scenery - a perfect spot for a few days off grid!

Another fantastic camp at Rocky River! Bill, Bronwyn and Tim looked after us very well and despite the weather giving us some more rain than other times we’ve been we enjoyed the different setting. It’s always beautiful here! 🥰💚🌱

Murphy’s Hut Campsite
This was my 4th time staying at Timbarra Valley and Murphys Hut didn't disappoint. A clean, flat site with the added benefit the hut verandah and only a short walk (5mins) down to the river. At night the soft background noise of the running river was great. We enjoyed a couple of beers on the hut verandah watching the sunset and then setup our swags on the verandah as well to avoid the night time dew was helped for an early departure the next morning. I’ll be back for visit number 5 very soon. Love this place!

Absolutely magic spot. Went with 2 other families and we had the campsite to ourselves. Very generous firewood allocation and nice big fire pit. Lots of rocks and a sandy(ish) beach on the rivers edge for the kids to entertain themselves as well as in the trees. Could see wildlife on the steep hill opposite which was nice.

Murphy’s Hut Campsite
Great location, so peaceful. Very quiet spot by the river at Murphy’s hut. A small walk to the river with some great bird life around. Would recommend it for campers who want some privacy and peace and quiet. Bill came to say hello and check in with us, made sure we had all we needed.

We were lucky enough to have the whole place almost to ourselves, which is what we wanted - solitude and serenity. Our dogs enjoyed daily walks full of interesting smells and playing in the river. Watching the bird life each day was interesting - particularly the kingfishers! Bill stocked us up with ample firewood for our stay and came to check in on us. The site was spacious, has trees for shade (though we were keen for the sun on the cool mornings), easy to access, and the on-site loo was a bonus. We like to come out this way when we get the chance to do a longer stay. Last time we stayed at the neighbouring site "The China Wall" and also enjoyed it.

Great location, very private, clean toilets, could not ask for any more. I stuffed up the booking and had to add an extra day on short notice, the hosts were very helpful in rectifying the situation for us Have already re booked for a 2nd visit later in the yr

Amazing location! Very peaceful, very sufficient space between campsites, and our campsite was perfect. I opted for the firewood option which was a great help, and plentifully provided. Would definitely recommend and I would stay there again.

Murphy’s Hut Campsite
Beautiful location and amazing swimming - dogs had a great time looking at the cows on their evening pass by . Amenities were extremely well maintained and looked after - Bronwyn was lovely and we could not fault the place - cannot wait until we head back .
