The Timbarra or Rocky River is an area of great beauty southeast of Tenterfield with soaring mountains cradling the river flats and undulating hills below and is a renowned cattle breeding region. The Petrie family have been in Tenterfield since 1860 and have owned properties in the valley for over 100 years. Tim’s great-grandfather was known as Rocky Jack because of his extensive holdings. Cattle are still walked up to the Timbarra Plateau property from the river properties ‘Man From Snowy River’ style. The Plateau can be seen rising above the valley to the north from the confluence of Demon Creek and the Timbarra/Rocky River. These flow along the Demon Fault which is clearly visible on a satellite map. The 3 valley properties ‘Corner Camp’, ‘Boundary’ and ‘’Pavels’ combined with ‘Timbarra Plateau’ total over 25000 acres. The whole valley was part of 2 earlier large selections averaging 100000 acres which gradually became broken up in the late 1800s/early 1990s. There is a proud timber history in the valley and the surrounding forested mountains with large sections of State Forest now transferred to Washpool National Park which abuts both the eastern and western boundaries of ‘Boundary’ (which takes its name from Boundary Creek). The eastern section of Washpool stretches across to the Clarence River, the largest eastern river in NSW. Washpool is where the Cedar King went missing and was never located. The Timbarra/Rocky River flows into the Clarence at Tabulam and then on to Grafton and out to sea at Yamba. The headwaters of the Rocky are all the way south to the Glen Innes Grafton road so the river can rise quickly if there is a downpour upstream. Interestingly when the Chinese gold miners left the Timbarra Plateau they came down with rickshaws into the Timbarra Valley then scaled the mountains to the west, near Boundary Creek, looking for their next gold diggings towards Glen Innes. The Boundary campsites at Boundary Riverside, The Cockatoo, The China Wall, and the Caves are all suitable for caravans, RVs, Camping trailers, tents and swags as is Timbarra Plateau. Corner Camp and Pavels are suitable for camping trailers, tents and swags. Boundary campsites access are all unaffected if the river rises however we will not take bookings at Corner Camp or Pavels in the likelihood of the river rising as we are committed to safety and avoiding inconvenience for guests. The Rocky is a very special place and we have campers who first came as children and are now bringing their grandchildren. We expect our guests to treat the area respectfully, and only leave footprints and tyre tracks. The valley provides wonderful scenery and settings for bushwalking, birdwatching, photography, painting, bicycle riding, swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding and canoeing, or just kicking back relaxing by the river, listening to the soothing sounds of the water, birds, and the turtles and platypus splashing, or being amazed at the mirror like images on the waters surface on a still day or the flickering light of a campfire at night and the stars above.

The Cockatoo

The Cockatoo is a picturesque private grassy area immediately adjacent to the Timbarra/Rocky River with gorgeous views to the surrounding landscape of mountains and cliffs, pasture and undulating hills.  The campsite is accessed off the public road, and is east of the China Wall campsite. The upper level is suitable for caravans, RVs and motorhomes of all sizes, and camping trailers, tents and swags. There is a slope to go down to the lower camping area immediately adjacent to the river and it is often used by campers with camping trailers. The lower area has lots of shade trees and the upper level is mostly cleared where the land is flattest but has shade from the adjoining trees. There is a pit toilet available. The Cockatoo takes its name from the cliff face to the west which has a white mark on the rock which looks like a cockatoo sitting there. The China Wall is a sheer rock wall directly opposite on the other side of the river from the Cockatoo cliff to the bend in the river. Adults are $18pp, children 5-16 years old are $10pp, children under 5 stay free. Pets are allowed but dogs must be leashed unless accompanied, and must be leashed if livestock or other campers are nearby. Fishing is also allowed providing licensed, but note that Eastern Cod are catch and release only, and any fish heads and innards are to be buried away from the campsite. Firewood is available for $15/night (20kg+) with the booking. Firewood can be purchased at the Mobil service station in Tenterfield for $18/bundle. No home firewood please due to Biosecurity risk especially Red Imported Fire Ants. The China Wall

The China Wall is a picturesque grassy area adjacent to the Timbarra/Rocky River with gorgeous views to the surrounding landscape of mountains and cliffs, pasture and undulating hills. The camping areas at Boundary Riverside, the China Wall, The Cockatoo and The Caves are all on the river but are on the western side with easy access to the public road so even if the river rises campers will not be stranded. Boundary adjoins Washpool National Park and is close to the Billirimba Fire Trail, Lookout and Falls.

We had a great weekend at Timbarra Valley Hipcamp and would definitely camp there again. It is a beautiful, secluded and peaceful spot, perfect for switching off and enjoying nature. The river was a real highlight — lovely and cool, and so refreshing during the day. A couple of things to note for future campers: our site was on a slope, which made tent setup a little tricky, so something to keep in mind if you’re in a tent. It’s also around a 1.5 hour drive on a dirt road from Drake, so come prepared and allow extra travel time. Overall, a fantastic escape if you’re after privacy, quiet surroundings and a refreshing river to enjoy.

Great peaceful spot. Went with a large group, plenty of space. Spread out campsites on the property meant we didn't see or hear other groups. Nice clean toilets. Beautiful outlook. Plenty of shade. Great communication from Bron. This was our second stay and we’ll be back again!

Absolutely amazing spot, so scenic, the people running the place were very helpful and friendly, grounds are maintained, and the pile of wood for extra $$$ is worth every penny! We wont hesitate to come back next time, we loved it!!

This is a beautiful property. The camp sites are private and on the river. If you enjoy peace, quiet, bird watching, turtle entertainment, swimming and sitting around a fire under a magnificent starry sky at night, you’ll love this place. The owners are friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.

Lovely and peaceful. We met Bill the first night and his very friendly dog, Bundy who welcomed us. The cows were gorgeous and there was plenty of wildlife. The river is easily accessible for fishing and exploring. We enjoyed our stay. Thank you

Such a beautiful place to be. Unsealed road very good on the way in. Camp area was well maintained and very secluded, aside from a couple of curious cows in the morning. Wish we had had more time for a longer stay.

Beautiful campsite right on the water. Spent our days swimming and relaxing under the shade of the trees. Cows wandering around which we loved, they never came into our camp. Definitely a great spot to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Our second stay here, this time at the caves site. Nice deep swimming hole although the entry is a bit muddy. Not a real drama as you walk a bit upriver and can get in at a nice rocky spot. Lovely responsive hosts, pit toilets super tidy. Such a beautiful valley and we feel privileged to be able to visit!

Murphy’s Hut Campsite
We had a fantastic 2 night stay at Murphy's Hut, it was such a beautiful, peaceful setting. Easy access to the creek and swimming options, the waterhole around the bend was wonderful. The added balcony space was also very useful on a warm sunny day. Thanks again, we will definitely recommend and hope to return to your piece of paradise!

What a beautiful piece of paradise hidden away from the world ! We had 3 nights at Cockatoo and loved it. We have a huge van(about 27ft) and got there easily. Semi Off Road van . So peaceful. Lots of wildlife. The water was lovely. Great for young kids . The only thing we struggled with a little was the directions in to the campsite from Tenterfield. They were kinda complex ,without need of being so. It took us 1 hour 30 mins to get to the site from Tenterfield. Decent dirt road . Pretty drive . Also,dingos were around our campsite each day,just to be aware if you have very young kids. Didn’t bother us though. We love this place and will definitely be back !!!

We loved our stay at Timbarra Valley. The caves campground was very spacious and had great river access. The amenities were very clean and the firewood was stocked up on arrival. Seen plenty of wildlife including platypus. Will definitely be booking another trip in the near future.

There is no doubt that this place is very special and unique. Will certainly be back to stay longer next time. The directions google gave were slightly off. Google had us to drive another 5 ks to check in. We then realised the check in point was about 1 kilometre before The China Wall but no one was there so maybe have some more signage to show check in spot because we honestly thought we were lost. As it was the weekend and no one was there I guess it’s okay to just drive to the spot. I understand you like to provide your own firewood but tbh it was rather difficult to burn. We did get through the whole pile delivered but OMG it was a struggle. These 2 points are simply constructive criticism and not to offend in anyway. Perhaps send an email that you won’t be at check in so guests don’t get confused. We all enjoyed the beautiful camp and stunning and very quiet. Thank you very much.

A beautiful part of the world. Peaceful, with birds and nice views. The drive in is slow but also pretty and worth it for the end destination. Would definitely recommend this camp, wish we had longer.

Great campsite under the She Oaks. Located on the grassy banks of the Rocky River. Lots of birds including Wedge tail Eagles, king Parrots, Crimson Rosellas and more. The highlight was watching the Platypus every dusk and dawn. Toilets were very well maintained and relatively close to sites. Would be a great place for canoeing and kayaking. We rode bikes along the road and walked up a ridge close to our site. Bronwyn was a welcoming host.
