I booked it for a peaceful nature getaway near Cessnock for the June long weekend. The amenities were solid. The toilets and facilities were well-maintained, no complaints there.
However, the big deal-breaker for me was the noise, and this is something I wish someone had warned me about before I booked.
This campsite is located very close to a dirt bike trail and race course. Throughout my stay, dirt bikes were audible pretty much constantly and it didn't stop after sunset either. If you're camping here hoping to unwind to the sounds of nature, that's not what you'll get. On top of that, there was consistent vehicle noise in the night, likely from nearby roads or tracks in the area.
I'm not writing this to be harsh. The site itself is functional and the facilities are fine. But I'm writing it because I genuinely wish this had been flagged in a review before I booked. Nobody mentioned it, so I had no idea what I was walking into.
I don't know if this happens often or just certain weekends.
Bottom line: Great if you don't mind motorsport noise and aren't looking for a quiet nature escape. Not great if peace and quiet is the whole point of your trip.

The site itself is lovely and well set out with enough space between campsites. We were a little disappointed on the reliabilty of the flushing toilet (the pump used to get the water from the outside tank to the cistern could possibly have been the issue) and the "open to interpretation" mention of firewood being available- yes it is, however its up to you to source and cut the wood you need from the property or surrounding bushland. We used our chainsaw hoping that it was ok to do so.
This place would be excellent for those wishing to use it as a base camp and then venture out into the local area, as Ironbark Down is very close to Cessnock.
There is phone reception. There are no natural curiosities like creek beds/ rock platforms/ walking tracks etc to explore immediately surrounding this campground. This campground would best suit those wishing to stay connected with society for your stay.
The families who we saw, had their kids riding around on push bikes, collecting sticks for the fire and playing ball games when they didn't leave on day trips.
Overall, the hosts were lovely when we spoke and had great communication via message. We feel the campground is beautiful and best suited to those wishing for a base camp or short stop over. We would recommend Ironbark Down to anyone wishing to do just that.

Stayed for 1 night over the Kings Bday weekend. It did the job for what we wanted which was a big fire and food over coals but that’s about it. The site isn’t as big as we thought so when busy, you’re never that far away from the next person. If half full, there’s plenty of space. There’s plenty of firewood to go and gather and the big wheelbarrow was very helpful for that. Toilet was ok but the flush wasn’t working so it was a manual job of filling up a bucket from outside which is fine until someone else is waiting, then it’s quite embarrassing.
The main problem is the noise. Throughout the day there are dirt bikes everywhere. A constant noise from them and even going directly past the site just didn’t make it relaxing. When the dirt bikes calm down, I’m presuming illegal forestry starts up so you have constant noise from chainsaws in to the night.
The trails off the property are littered with rubbish, old car tires, broken pieces of cars, smashed glass and even a full burnt out car. You’d have to go quite far from the property to get in to any thing nice and avoid the dirt bikes.
Sonnia was very polite and responsive to our messages about someone using a chainsaw on site which it clearly states you’re not allowed to use. It’s a shame really as the main problems here are out of their control, it’s the people around them that are them problem.

Had a great time ! Plenty of space to find a little spot to set up amongst the trees or out in the open. Heaps of sticks and branches to collect for firewood if needed. A bit of noise from the motorbike tracks around the property but no big deal really. Toilet facilities were cute and well maintained. Road coming in was a bit dicey in a lowered car but just managed. Sonnia was welcoming and helpful :)

Sonia was awesome so was the campibg area only thing is if u dont like doing a bush wee the toilet is pretty fair distance. Other than that everything was awesome.

This place had plenty of space for everyone. It was great to have a toilet and also some walking tracks available around the site. It’s also really close to town or the hunter valley for activities. We have a nervous dog and we found this site suited us well, the owners dog stayed with them and other campers were respectful and kept dogs at their own sites. We would stay again!

We had a wonderful stay at Ironbark Down over the Anzac weekend. Lots of space for everyone to spread out and so wonderfully quiet in the evenings and early mornings - nothing but bird songs. Really enjoyed having a big log fire under the stars too. Magic.
For future visitors, best to park in the middle section if you need good sun for solar re-charging (and avoid stopping under the trees like we foolishly did). Plus expect a degree of noise during the daytime from the constant dirt bike traffic common in the surrounding area.
Lastly, if you have a big caravan like ours (23ft) avoid the first very tight gate/turn or you risk damaging your van - go another 100m further and swing wide to get into the top entrance and you should be OK. If you have a caravan bigger than 23ft or a low clearance on-road van I'd avoid this particular location altogether due to the rough track in and 15 sharp/steep gravel ridges along it. But all in all a really enjoyable stay.

This place was exactly what I needed to completely disconnect from the city and reconnect with myself. It’s spacious, peaceful, and perfect for walking, making a bonfire, and simply enjoying the moment. I had such a great experience and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to relax and unwind.

We had a great few nights here. It’s easy to find using Google Maps and it’s less crowded than other campgrounds. The site is clean and quiet, away from street noise. It’s the perfect base for exploring the Hunter Valley area and we’ll definitely be back.

Was a great place to camp very isolated but still only 5-10min into Cessnock so great base to explore the region. You need to use google maps to find Boundary Fire trail as not shown on Waze

We loved staying at Ironbark Down. The location is very convenient for visiting the Hunter Valley. The campsite is huge and quiet. We enjoyed the chill vibes at night and even saw shooting stars. It was amazing.
