Queensland’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed Fraser Island (K'gari) may be the world’s largest sand island but its landscape offers even more spectacular sights than the giant dunes for which it is famed. The scenery here is dotted with shimmering freshwater lakes, crystal-clear creeks, wind-sculpted cliffs, and lush rainforests, promising ample adventures from swimming to 4WDing and wildlife spotting. Fraser Island is also famed for its dingos, so campers with small children may want to opt for fenced-in campsites. You can visit all year-round but spring (September through November) offers the most comfortable temperatures, reduced humidity, and low rainfall. Plan ahead, especially during school holidays, as camping permits must be acquired before arrival.

Lots of room so you're not crammed in like sardines like some places. Amenities were always clean and showers were hot with good pressure. Kids had fun swimming, playing tennis as well as kayaking on the dam. They had plenty of room to kick a ball around and ride their bikes. Also got to witness a newly born foal when we woke up one morning. Hosts were lovely to deal with. Would happily spend another weekend away here.

Absolutely loved our stay over Easter Weekend. Our stand out moment was that although there were alot of campers we weren't boxed in like may other places we have stayed before. Plenty of room to enjoy your own space. Although we stayed at an unpowered site we were incredibly happy to be able to take advantage of all the amenities including the beautiful pool and BBQ area. We also took advantage of taking a picnic down to the lake. Absolutely perfect 👌 the staff were very lovely and very accommodating. We will be back for sure !

Weekend Trip to Susan River Homestead

Non powered sites are on a huge paddock with plenty of room between at least 20 different campsites on Easter long weekend. For us setting up relatively close to the river/creek, there was practically no mosquitos/bugs that bites to the extent that I slept on my roof racks in a sleeping bag one night when stargazing and woke up untouched. Showers were great, reasonably sized personal cubicles, nice & hot, water pressure was very good when me & 3 of our campers all showered at the same time and only the last person that got in had weak pressure in the shower on the far right. Pool was a great way to cool off on a hot sunny day, >2m deep in the deepest part, only downside is that the surrounding edge of the pool could be swept more to prevent grass and sticks from going in the pool as much. Family/owners running the place are very friendly from the get go, had conversations with the groundskeeper/cleaner and the bloke driving around in the beautiful Land Cruiser delivering firewood and ice every evening. One night, a HUGE bonfire was held and it was a great experience surrounded by nice people and a quick way to warm up. Noise curfew from 9pm-8am, didn’t have issues with neighbouring campers once. Overall would highly recommend, good pricing for the experience you get.

We will 100% be back! Had the best time camping at Susan River over Easter, there was so much to do - horse riding, swimming, tennis, volleyball, playground, dirt bike tracks, huge bonfire… the list goes on! Cute little cafe on site to get coffees from and a bar in the arvos. The staff were beyond lovely, the property is run by three brothers who are true gentlemen and so caring. We loved it! We will be back!

We usually go camping twice a year, and for over five years we’ve stayed at various campgrounds. I can honestly say that Susan Riverside has been the best place we’ve ever stayed. The facilities, bathrooms, and showers are always clean. There are great activities for kids, a nice pool, and the campsites are spacious. There are bins conveniently located everywhere. Even with horses around, there’s no bad smell. The place is absolutely amazing — 10/10. I’d come back a thousand times, and I think it’ll be our first choice from now on. Highly recommended!

The best lakeside camping in Fraser Island guide

Where to go

Central Station

Set inland, 20 minutes west of Eurong Beach Resort, and surrounded by rainforest, campers staying in Central Station can have a great walk along the banks of the freshwater Wanggoolba Creek and through the lush rainforest. Flora and fauna you may come across include the rare king fern Angiopteris evecta, which has the largest fern fronds in the world, as well as turtles and eels, and you’ll also be within easy access of Lake McKenzie, a popular swimming spot. The camping area, typically one of the island’s busiest, is surrounded by dingo-deterrent fence.

Waddy Point

On the island’s northeast coast, Waddy Point offers both beachfront (unfenced) and inland (fenced) camping areas with coin-operated hot showers and picnic tables, as well as capacity for camper trailers. Making Waddy Point your base puts you within easy access of some of the island’s top attractions, including the coastal headland of Indian Head (a good spot for watching dolphins and whales) and the rock pools filled with bubbling water known as the Champagne Pools. You’ll also find plenty of opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and hiking.

Dundubara

Dundubara is located in the middle of the 75-Mile Beach scenic drive on the east coast, halfway between Indian Head and the rusting S.S. Maheno shipwreck, which ran aground in 1935. You’re also within easy reach of Eli Creek, a popular freshwater swimming spot with a long boardwalk. Camping is available in a large fenced-in area behind great sand dunes and it's one of the few camping sites on the island that allows campfires.

Lake Boomanjin

Along the Southern Lakes scenic drive, the distinctly red-hued Lake Boomanjin offers a peaceful setting and opportunities for swimming and kayaking. The secluded lake is typically far less visited than Lake McKenzie, the island’s other famed perched lake. You can camp right by the lake at the fenced-in camping area with picnic tables and surrounded by forest: note that it is walk-in camping only, so there's no vehicle access to the tent sites.
