Past trip
in Humboldt Redwoods- Into the Woods, CaliforniaWe were warmly welcomed by Karyn and her co-host, who provided very helpful written notes about accessing and using the space and the property, and who were readily available to give input throughout our stay. The spacious tent and out-in-the-open-behind-a-tree compost toilet are set up a comfortable distance away from the main house, while the communal fire pit, outdoor shower, and coffee/food prep area are just beside the house, but the hosts left us plenty of room to enjoy ourselves while close by. The road to the property is very rough and takes a long time to traverse, so I would not recommend planning to use this site as a base for day trips further away. However, the remoteness lends itself to beautiful stargazing and night sound concerts.
Past trip
in Serendipity, CaliforniaJennifer has set up this camping experience with a great deal of care. The grounds are blessed with beautiful redwoods and fantastic night skies and the camping area is fenced off to keep the host's friendly dogs out, which helps guests to feel more than welcome to occupy all of the space provided. The site is easy to access with parking just outside of the gate and only steps from the tent, and it is far enough removed from the main house so as to create plenty of privacy. It is well-manicured while preserving an authentic outdoor feeling. The human touch here lends convenience: pathways are cleared; solar lamps subtly light the way while brighter lanterns are also provided; potable and running water are available, and the outdoor kitchen includes a two-burner propane stove, prep counter, sink with soap and sponges, drying rack, as well as a small cabinet with pots, pans, dishes, and utensils. A hand-washing station with running water is also provided outside of the compostable toilet which is down a path that lends plenty of privacy in addition to the structure itself which has a closing door. We did not use the outdoor shower but enjoyed the sturdy hammock & umbrella-shaded table area as well as the chance to interact with Jennifer and her furry companions.

Millie Campsite
in Shanti Permaculture Farm, CaliforniaMillie Campsite on Elizabeth's land was a pleasure to stay at! Welcomed upon arrival into the coop where Elizabeth was feeding the fowl, I was immediately introduced to all of the animals that I would be sharing the land with. They generally keep closer to the feeding area but will occasionally make an appearance at the site itself, remaining gentle. It's camping and the farm life (with all the farm animal sounds) at once. The site remains shaded for a good part of the day and delights include a hammock hanging under the redwood trees, an outdoor shower that turns hot right away, incredible blackberries growing on the property and all along the road, fresh eggs, and the warmth of this host. A porta potty replaced the composting toilet while I was there and was clean and convenient (it got drained during my stay but was in good condition even before this service). Occidental and the general area are beautiful as well of course! Highly recommend for those that can handle a steep incline to the site from the parking area where the nearest toilet (one of two) is located. You can drive directly to the short path that leads to the site to load and unload, but be prepared to take the hill by foot otherwise. Access to the property and communication with the host were excellent!

Babbling Bates Creek Room w/ba
in Babbling Bates Creek Hipcamp, CaliforniaChristieâs spot in the redwoods is both picturesque and easy to reach from town. Sheâs set up this site with care. The interior of the RV is even cuter, in my opinion, than it appears in the photos and the outdoor patio has an attractive and very sturdy table and chairs set for cooking/dining as well as a set of chairs lined with faux fur for a more comfortable sit and intake of the view. The RV has plenty of storage space including a closet with numerous hangers. I found the bed to be totally comfortable and used no extra padding other than my sleeping bags. The whole site remains mostly shaded throughout the day with just a few sunbeams shining through when itâs sunny. The walk down to the creek is quite short. Rather than the creek itself, I found the view through the trees and across to the other side of the creek to be the main attraction. The siteâs proximity to hiking at Land of Medicine Buddha is a plus for those drawn to the woods. Christie made sure I was comfortable and remained reachable throughout my stay. Cell reception (for AT&T) is just a couple of minutes drive back in the direction of Soquel.

Sky Mountain - Window Rock
in Sky Mountain ~ Santa Barbara, CaliforniaMila's setup is a delight. This is the smaller, shadier of the two spaces, with perhaps less privacy because it is directly below the other campsite, although I was the only guest during my stay. My tent remained well shaded through my 11am departure. A beautiful rock formation forms one "wall" of the site, creating a pleasant sense of enclosure with views beyond it. A hammock under the trees nearby was a pleasure and a child-sized picnic table and benches provided ample dining space for myself but could be tight for other adult-sized guests. The solar-heated shower was warm by the time of my late morning shower, although it was exposed to the parking space below. The outdoor kitchen space is generously set up with all that one needs for microwaved meals, with very good cooling properties in the fridge/freezer and additional touches including fruit from the property and the best granola I've ever had. The outdoor sink drains into a plant bed and serves as a hand washing station on the way back from the outdoor potty as well as a dish washing station with good sun exposure for quick air drying. The property's proximity to town (Santa Barbara) was surprising despite its more remote-feeling location. A wonderful getaway while close to both the city and country destinations further along the road. Mila and her helper were very welcoming and easy to communicate with. I was shown around and free to enjoy this special place on my own with the family on site keeping to themselves yet available if needed.
