#5 - Play in the Shade
in Jug Handle Creek Farm, CaliforniaWe had an absolutely wonderful stay at Jug Handle Creek Farm! Our camp sites was large (site 7) and campers at site 6 felt far enough away from us to feel fairly private. The rest of the camp was hidden to us at our site. We had 3 kids under 7 years old in our group and they loved the trail off the back side of our camp, which lead to a deck (or they called "the stage") to play on. We all loved our large camp fire pit to cook on, and appreciated access to potable water and pit toilets.
The other gem about this property is the access to Jug Handle Creek and the epic blond sandy beach. It was breath taking and a great way to spend an afternoon on into sunset for our group: surfing, sand sculpture making, meditating and pure restful enjoyment for our two families.
We also liked being close to Fort Braggs and even spent some time at the Sea Glass beach. Ultimately, we preferred Jug Handle Creek Beach for the serenity and privacy worth traveling long distances for. We hope to return some day!
Site 6 - Riverside Eden
in River Eden, CaliforniaWe had a wonderful time with our 4 year old son camping in the shade of the trees during our stay. Teresa's family was warm and welcoming to us, and we even had an evening drumming circle with them. We didn't hike down and camp by the creek, but since we had our son we chose the sites where we could have our car near us. It still felt private. We had access to fresh mountain water and the porta potty was also nice to have available. One of their sweet cats adopted us for the stay and a chicken hung out at our camp for most of a morning. All in view of a fruit orchard and organic gardens. This was a great launching place for us into the King's Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, about 40 min away. Looking forward to camping there again!
Site 2 - Camp Midgard - Wine Country
in Odin Camp Wine Country, CaliforniaCamp Midgard is a beautiful property between Santa Rosa and Calistoga. The campground is located on top of the property where you are able to enjoy epic birds-eye views along the trail and in certain areas of the campground. We were at site 2 and had a lovely overlook of the valley and other hills. The hike to the campground is steep, but worth the views and privacy, but may not be ideal for some not equipped for the steep hike. The entire campground was booked over the weekend (Memorial Day weekend), but everyone was very respectful of shared cooking areas, toilets and quiet hours. We hiked up with our 3 year old and he did great, we just took our time hiking the hill - and really, with our packs loaded, it was easy to take our time anyway. At site 2, we were close to poison oak, so do know what the plant looks like to avoid it. The site didn't have any absolutely flat areas, but the slight angle was doable for sleeping. We also cooked at our site using our lightweight camping propane burners, so the only time we were around other campers was when we needed to use the composting toilet at the shared cooking/storage/toilet/water gathering area (The Shed) by site 6. Henrik advised us the area was still under construction and will be improved upon over the summer. One thing to note, the door where the composting toilet is has a window at the top vs. being a fully private space. Some in our group brought a buddy to guard the door when the other went, but we noticed other campers being okay using it on their own. We were thankful for a toilet!
Henrik is was great to communicate with (fast responses and good suggestions to questions asked prior to the trip), and he and his kids were fun to chat with when we checked-in and in passing by after our daytime adventures in wine country.
