Low Gear Farmstead's 75 acres border the lovely San Saba River, providing campers the opportunity to swim, wade, fish and paddle. Farm animals including dairy goats, chickens, and horses inhabit the property, but wildlife such as deer, wild turkey, ringtail, fox and armadillo is also abundant. Bird watchers will be delighted at the diversity of birds, especially in spring. Don't forget to look up at night as our dark skies provide excellent stargazing on clear nights and a very visible Milky Way. We limit the number of campsites and spread them out so that campers may enjoy privacy and seclusion. Campsites are provided with compost toilets and most sites also have a fire ring. 4WD is not required unless we have had heavy rains, otherwise most vehicles, except very low clearance ones, do fine. The nearest town, Menard, is about a 12 minute drive from the property and has a grocery store, gas stations, a couple restaurants, a pub and a bakery. Lovers of history might enjoy visiting the Presidio de San Saba, about 20 minutes from the farm, as well as the historic Pioneers Rest Cemetery in town. Low Gear Farmstead is a safe, welcoming space for queers and POC.

We had a wonderful time and enjoyed the river. We actually did car camping in one of the RV sites. I would love to explore more of the primitive camping. It was beautiful in the trees. The owners came by often to check, especially after a thunderstorm. We definitely stay again.

I enjoyed the area and the time there. I would recommend them. The rv sites 1-4 near the water have very little shade. The awnings are not useful as the sites are south facing. Bring additional shade that is flexible for coverage.

Great place to stay, lots of awesome options from rv spots with river front view. Cabins and tent spots, water was great , the perfect cold to Relax you, my daughter loved walking around the river and watching the different varieties of fish swimming by, will definitely be back

Location: site 5. Rating 5. On site property management - awesome and super hospitable. Hiking by the river, awesome. Bring wading boots as the river is shallow enough to walk across. Amazing views! Game warden came by and gave out stickers to kids. Bring off road truck for across the river bed, nice rock trail for it.

Lovely wide open property with large spaces, adorable cabins, large clean bath house, pool and hot tub. our surprise was to find it is also an exotic deer farm so all the time here we were surrounded by the deer roaming freely. Wonderful to see the different kinds. It was quite there and the hosts and their helpers made our stay perfect. We will stay again and recommend others to stay. Thank you for a nice night

The pull through slots were long enough for our full setup and car. Electricity, water and sewer all worked fine. Had good enough cell service for our hotspot. Getting in and out was easy and the gate is nice and wide. Got to see the deers which are on the property. The issues are the pull through slots are very narrow and close together. Our stairs almost were into the neighboring site. Also, there is one quiet "permanent" rig two sites over which needs a bit of repair and makes things look like this wouldn't be a good spot to stay. This is a great place for an overnight stop.

We just finished up our overlanding trailer and wanted to find a spot a few hrs away from home to test it out. While Texas really doesn’t have a whole lot of public land, we thought an RV park would be perfect for the first trip. Our neighbors recommended Mason Tx to us and this park came up and looked perfect! Well sure enough it was!! We were immediately greeted upon entry and the gentleman was incredibly nice and helpful! Got to our site (4) and it was beautiful!! Nice and quiet with a gorgeous view! We even had the same helpful lady who answered our phone call, come out and check on us to make sure we were all set before the super cold front came in! 10/10, will definitely be coming back!!

A very quiet, private amd well equipped HipCamp that is far enough from “civilization” to be properly restful, and close enough to Fredericksburg (14 miles) to make it a great base to explore the wonderful Hill Country. We would definitely return.

It was a beautiful place and lots of deer. The owners are really sweet too which was really welcoming to have. We did tent camping right in the center near the bathroom which was perfect. The bathrooms are very well kept and clean. My boyfriend and I have already decided to go back for another stay.

Was a great location right off the highway and very quiet. It is a campground and event location with a nice amount of wildlife within the fenced area. We didn't have much time since we were passing through but would love to return and spend some time here. Our spot was in the front but still was very quiet and couldn't hear the highway. Only possible negative would be that the front pull through sites were right next to each other and would have been on top of others if the row had been full. But the site was good and the hookups were very easy.

South Llano River Campground

Maybe tent-camping in 100 degree weather wasn't the smartest idea we've ever had, but South Llano River State Park kept us cool. For the most part. There are two main areas to access the river and swim, float, sit, cool off. It involves a .3 mile walk or drive from the campsites, depending on where you go, so plan accordingly. The walk in campsites nice, but next time we may stay at the water/electric sites, as there was a good mix of tent campers and RV's and there was more shade. GREAT hot showers and had amazingly great cell phone service the whole time. Saw a variety of wildlife: armadillos, turkeys, snakes (in the water!), a fox, deer, a great Blue Heron and lots of birds and lizards.

South Llano River Hike In Campground

The campsites are on top of each other. The lay out makes no sense. You walk through other people's campsite to get to yours in most of these. The older female host was not a happy camper. We offered to pay an additional night since we weren't going to be out by checkout time, but when hubby ran into her again, while packing a load out, he says she complained about having to come back whether we stayed or left. We were the only ones there. Maybe she had super bowl plans 🙄. We probably will not be returning to this park. The only highlight was the astronomy club being out that weekend, and seeing the armadillos. I'd never seen so many, and they are fun to watch. I didn't realize they jump straight up when started.
