Camping in Sully Creek State Park

In the epicenter of the North Dakota badlands, near Medora and Theodore Roosevelt National Park, you’ll find the wonderful Sully Creek State Park. When the Little Missouri River is flowin’ high, canoeing the river’s 274 miles is an excellent way to see the badlands from a different perspective. Plus, it’s the state’s only State Scenic River, so you know it’s kind of a big deal. Other fun activities include hiking and mountain biking, with the 120-mile long Maah Daah Hey Trail being a fan favorite. The park is primitive, but there are corrals available for equestrians, and there’s a small campground with vault toilets. Plan your trip early, as this park is seasonal, and is only open from April 1 to November 30.

The best time to visit Sully Creek State Park is during the spring and early summer when the weather is mild and the park's activities are in full swing. However, be mindful of the early spring river conditions for water activities. Winters can be harsh, making some activities and access to certain areas more challenging.
