Heart Butte Dam, a remarkable earth fill structure completed in 1949, stands out as a vital resource in south central North Dakota. Nestled along the Heart River, the dam creates the Heart Butte Reservoir, also known as Lake Tschida, which primarily serves irrigation and flood control needs. This unique reservoir not only supports agricultural activities but also enhances recreational opportunities and provides essential habitats for fish and wildlife. The Heart Butte Unit irrigation system spans approximately 13,100 acres of irrigable land, extending from the Heart Butte River to the Missouri River. This extensive irrigation network plays a crucial role in sustaining local agriculture and ensuring the region's economic vitality. Lake Tschida is named in honor of Michael Tschida Sr., an influential figure in the area. Born in Vienna, Austria, in 1866, he immigrated to the United States in 1890 and settled in Mandan, North Dakota. Tschida later moved to Glen Ullin in 1900, where he became the town's first mayor in 1906. A passionate advocate for the Heart Butte Dam's construction, he witnessed its completion in 1949 before passing away in 1956. Dispersed camping is permitted throughout the grassland, as is hiking, horseback riding, canoeing, fishing, hunting, and backpacking.
