Nice quiet RV spot by a pond. Worth a stop even in winter with limited services. Directions were OK, just be sure to turn left at the house at the end of the road and you'll see the camping spots.

2 nights at Quiet Country Farmland
What a beautiful experience! My husband and I had the perfect getaway at the little red cabin. Betsy and Dan were awesome hosts and made sure we had such a good time. Waking up to views of the sunrise over the pond and sheep in the nearby field was magic.
We cooked all of our meals over the campfire and stargazed at night. I asked about animals and Dan was kind enough to take us on a tour of the farm! What a cool experience. We also made sure to stop in town on our way out to grab some of their meat at the Trading Co. to take home. Can’t beat the price or quality! Don’t miss that awesome shop with all kinds of local treats!
We took advantage of the coffee and popcorn provided and the cozy blankets for the campfire at night. We love camping but also love having heat and a cozy bed to sleep in. This was the perfect middle ground.
Make sure you bring all of your cooking and cleaning items if you plan to make meals there. There were disposable cups, plates, utensils, etc. provided.
The PERFECT place to relax and recharge. We can’t wait to visit again!

1 night at Quiet Country Farmland
From the second that I arrived Dan and Betsy were the absolute best hosts anyone could ask for. The cabin offered a quiet and cozy experience along with an amazing outdoor experience. Stunning views mixed with a calming atmosphere made an incredible stay. Not only was this experience delightful because of the distance into the country, it was amazing because it is a fully functional farm. Dan was able to give me a complete tour of the farm which included : horses, sheep, pigs and cows. He has a world class facility and the best part is he let me purchase %100 grass fed lamb and beef. Overall the stay was absolutely fantastic and I will continue to come back to learn more about where my food is grown and made and find a calming stay where I know I can connect with nature!

I stayed here 3 nights just me and my dog. The site is safe, beautiful grounds, great for hikes, exploring, viewing wildlife, nature ,etc... Clint communicated very well, directions are accurate and easy to find. As soon as I pulled in the driveway there were deer in the field & driveway.What a beautiful site ! Also the stars are amazing at night too!

This stay was incredible! Tamitha and her husband were amazing and accommodating hosts. Their property was beautiful and the animals clearly well loved. Tamitha went out of her way to ensure we had everything we needed and that my daughter had a wonderful experience (she was a big fan of the donkeys, especially Ernie). They also had a wonderful lake about a quarter mile away from them that was perfect for swimming my dogs. We will be back and wish we had more that a quick nights stop!

Got there early and took the back two sites so tents were farthest back from the one other site in the vicinity and we used the fire and picnic table in the other one. The creek is beautiful and all solid rock in the creek bed so you can hunt for all kinds of cool fossils and geodes without getting muddy. The only pit toilet is up by the gate/entrance where the geode mine is so if you're thinking you want to be close than take the first site before the little bridge but be aware people showing up to the geode mine early in the morning might make noise with their pickaxes.

Site 6 was well shaded. The single bathroom/shower was a short walk from our campsite. The door is propped open so no code is needed. Friday night the campground was fairly deserted. It got more lively the next night! The mosquitoes were fairly aggressive until the breeze came up on Saturday. Unfortunately, the pool closed last weekend. I was glad we found that out when we called before we arrived. (We booked our site, #6 but the confirmation recorded it as #1 so we called to check on that and were told that it is a glitch but not to worry.). We appreciated the free firewood since the site is a bit more than we usually spend. There were street lights and cameras nearby. Disc golfers came through every so often. There was fairly regular foot and car traffic below our site. We explored Keokuk and Hamilton. Be sure to check out the view from Rand Park!

Wildcat City Park Campground is clean and well maintained. Did not have any issues. Other campers were courteous, no loud music/noise even with it being a holiday weekend.
Some tree branches near drive need to be trimmed. Understand why the shorter hose on the dump station, but it could be a bit longer.

We had a relaxing evening! The campsite was clean, included a picnic table, fire ring, and a trash can. Right next to the creek, close enough to hear a small waterfall all night long. While you may hear the occasional vehicle off in the distance, the site is secluded and private. Minutes away from food and convenience stores, as well as the Mississippi River. You can dig for geodes on the property, and we found plenty of good ones.

Looking for a natural playground in northeastern Missouri? Look no further than Wakonda State Park. With a bounty of lakes—six in total—this park is a water-lover’s paradise. Bring your boat or kayak, or rent one onsite. Set sail to explore the three water trails. Or, toss in a line to try your hand at catching bass, crappie, or catfish. Be sure to look to the skies and shores to watch for migratory birds and other wildlife. Swimming, hiking, and biking round out the onsite activities. Venture over to the Great River National Wildlife Refuge to explore habitats and wildlife along the Mississippi River.
Notable Camping Spots
- Best for tent campers: Boulder Lake Campground has four walk-in tent sites.
- Best for big rigs: Wakonda Lake Campground has full hookups, including 50-amp, at every site.
- Best for relaxation: Wakonda Lake Campground has just 14 sites in a quiet loop.
Tips for snagging a campsite
- Reservations open at 7:00 a.m. CST 12 months in advance and are bookable online or on the phone.
- Two-night reservations are required for weekend stays (Friday and Saturday or Saturday and Sunday).
- Boulder Lake Campground and Wakonda Lake Campground are both open year round, but reservations can only be made April 15 through October 31.
- Water and showers are available April 15 through October 31.
- Walk-up reservations are allowed for non-reserved campsites.
- Some sites have shore access to the nearby lakes. Check park maps for locations.
When to go
Summer is the busier season at Wakonda State Park, as the waters warm through May and June. Sites without shade may be especially hot, while the cooler waters offer heat relief for those who take a swim. Spring may be chilly, but warm days are perfect for relaxing at the park. Fall brings pops of colors to the woodlands, especially in October. Though campsites are open year round, campers need to prepare for the potential of freezing temps and frozen precip, but the serenity of the park at this quiet time of year is tempting.
Know before you go
- Lake shores are natural habitats. Be aware of poison ivy, ticks, and chiggers.
- Tent campers heading to the walk-in sites will find free utility carts for packing gear and supplies in and out.
- Many campsites are in open prairie terrain, so expect full sun in summer. The Boulder Lake Campground is more likely to have some sides with shade.
- Watercraft rentals are available April 15 through October 31. Free boat launches are available on Wakonda and Agate lakes.
- The natural sand swim beach has a showerhouse nearby.
