History of JW Durango Riverside Resort
It all started in 1965…
When this campground hosted its first guests the goal back then was simply to offer folks from around the Four Corners a place to relax and lounge along the Animas River.
Today, the property boasts 73 quality RV sites, 24 cabins and 6 tent sites. We also have a heated pool, playground, convenience store, retail shop, game room, café with a large deck for dining, laundry room, paved roadways, two bath houses, and an observation deck overlooking the Animas.
The property sits just south of Bakers Bridge, a local landmark made famous as the set of the climactic finale in the movie “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” – where Paul Newman and Robert Redford sat along the rocky cliffs that line the river before they famously took the plunge.
As the lifeblood of this community, the Animas River winds its way under that bridge and south toward historic downtown Durango. Everyone from whitewater enthusiasts and acclaimed fly fisherman to laidback locals in inner tubes enjoy the same flowing mountain waters miners have tapped for more than a century.
Back in 1965, the population of Durango was just over 10,000 and La Plata County almost 20,000. Today, the city itself is home to 20,000 residents while the county is closing in on a staggering 58,000.
As more and more people discover the beauty and majesty of the San Juan National Forest and surrounding Rocky Mountain peaks, the number of people flocking to the Four Corners region continues to grow.

We are in the rural area between Hesperus, Durango, and Mancos - An easy drive to Durango and its thrift shops, restaurants, galleries, cafes, Animas River and River Trail, and hiking and biking trails. On the property are cats, two dogs, two equines (you will hear our burro braying). Our neighbors have yaks, cattle, goats, sheep, dogs, horses, poultry, and other farm animals. You will also see the wild critters that inhabit our corner of La Plata County. You are welcome to wander our property beyond the Big Stick Ditch but do not go into the pasture with our burro or enter any of the out buildings.
Park within steps of the Art Shack, cross the foot bridge over the bubbling irrigation ditch, and you have arrived!
Please remove your shoes before entering!
There is electricity, a queen bed, rustic chairs inside, an outdoor table and chairs, a composting toilet, a coffee machine, and purified drinking water for your use. An electric heater is supplied during winter months. There is no air conditioning.
We are available if needed (unless we are out of town adventuring) but will not expect to interact with you as you relax.

The paved county road off HWY 160W to our campground is well maintained, making the 1.5-mile drive easily accessible, regardless of what you bring. Enjoy various recreational activities in the Durango area, including many hiking and mountain biking trails, fishing, river rafting, rock climbing, zip-lining, off-roading, horseback riding, shopping, dining, breweries, and much more. The ranch was the site of a sawmill in the early 1900s when the old Rio Grande Southern and Galloping Goose Railroads ran through the property along the Dolores River. All that’s left now is a little shack in the middle of the meadow and some remnants of the railroad tracks in the river.

History of JW Durango Riverside Resort
It all started in 1965…
When this campground hosted its first guests the goal back then was simply to offer folks from around the Four Corners a place to relax and lounge along the Animas River.
Today, the property boasts 73 quality RV sites, 24 cabins and 6 tent sites. We also have a heated pool, playground, convenience store, retail shop, game room, café with a large deck for dining, laundry room, paved roadways, two bath houses, and an observation deck overlooking the Animas.
The property sits just south of Bakers Bridge, a local landmark made famous as the set of the climactic finale in the movie “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” – where Paul Newman and Robert Redford sat along the rocky cliffs that line the river before they famously took the plunge.
As the lifeblood of this community, the Animas River winds its way under that bridge and south toward historic downtown Durango. Everyone from whitewater enthusiasts and acclaimed fly fisherman to laidback locals in inner tubes enjoy the same flowing mountain waters miners have tapped for more than a century.
Back in 1965, the population of Durango was just over 10,000 and La Plata County almost 20,000. Today, the city itself is home to 20,000 residents while the county is closing in on a staggering 58,000.
As more and more people discover the beauty and majesty of the San Juan National Forest and surrounding Rocky Mountain peaks, the number of people flocking to the Four Corners region continues to grow.
Whether hiking, biking, horseback riding, or four-wheeling this area has an endless number of adventures to uncover. Even if it takes a lifetime to explore some of the forgotten roads in this region, these outdoor experiences offer just a glimpse of what there is to do when you visit.
People come from around the world to ride the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, listen to songs and stories from the Bar D Wranglers, hit the slopes at Purgatory Resort, or hug the guardrails along the legendary Million Dollar Highway. These are just a few of the reasons people continue to come back year after year, and generation after generation. Even here at Durango Riverside, we constantly listen to stories from guests who first came here as children and now return with their own.

We are in the rural area between Hesperus, Durango, and Mancos - An easy drive to Durango and its thrift shops, restaurants, galleries, cafes, Animas River and River Trail, and hiking and biking trails. Mancos is filled with art galleries, a wonderful bakery and cafe, beauty, and endless trails. Also within driving distance are Phil's World, Cortez, Sand Canyon, the beautiful La Plata Canyon, Mesa Verde National Park, Lake NIghthorse, and more! There are endless hiking and biking trails within driving distance of the property. Cross country skiing and snowshoeing abound and alpine skiing at Purgatory Ski Resort are popular winter activities. The views of the La Platas and Sleeping Ute are ever changing, awe inspiring, and constant from the deck of The Art Shack.
On the property are cats, two dogs, two equines (you will hear our burro braying). Our neighbors have yaks, cattle, goats, sheep, dogs, horses, poultry, and other farm animals. You will also see the wild critters that inhabit our corner of La Plata County. You are welcome to wander our property beyond the Big Stick Ditch but do not go into the pasture with our burro or enter any of the out buildings.
Park within steps of the Art Shack, cross the foot bridge over the bubbling irrigation ditch, and you have arrived!

There is electricity, a queen bed, rustic chairs inside, an outdoor table and chairs, a composting toilet, a coffee machine, and purified drinking water for your use. An electric heater is supplied during winter months. There is no air conditioning.
We are available if needed (unless we are out of town adventuring) but will not expect to interact with you as you relax.
No dogs are allowed - 2 people max - No smoking of lit substances inside The Art Shack. Please remove your shoes before entering The Art Shack!

This is an incredibly unique space thoughtfully furnished with original art and handmade furniture. The Canyon Cabin includes a queen size bed, a table for two, a small bathroom with shower, small refrigerator, microwave, ipod docking device for your music, two burner cooktop, coffee pot, microwave, and outdoor grill.
Guest access
Guests have access to the vegetable gardens and greenhouses for cooking tasty meals. In the summer we grow an abundance of tomatoes, summer squash, green beans, broccoli, peppers, and some melons. In the winter, our upper greenhouse grows a variety of greens-- lettuce, spinach, kale, and chard.

I stayed in the basic cabin (ie, the fancy shed). It was perfect, one queen bed, two twin bunks, ac, heat, ceiling fan and a light. The sites are a little close together but I was not spending the summer so not a big deal, I was there to sleep after spending the day at mesa verde. The grounds and restroom/shower was very neat and clean. I would definitely stay again. There is definitely road noise but as you can see from the posting, they are next to a major road. It was not a big deal in the cabin as I had windows closed as the temps were pretty cool.

This place is absolutely stunning! I have never seen so many stars before and the campsites are spaced out far enough it felt liek a private retreat. They have restrooms, showers, and a community kitchen with every cooking utensil you may need. The restrooms were so clean and the camp manager was so kind!

The art shack is a great spot. The view is gorgeous and even though the temperature got up to 87 it was nice a cool as the shack is in a small group of pine and popular trees. Even if it had been too hot Gretchen provided a cooler with a fan. There's a swing out front that was lovely to sway on while I watched the sunset. It was beautiful and peaceful. In distance you can hear some cows mooing and an occasional donkey song. Everything you want in a weekend away.

Had such a great time! We stayed in the one-room glamping cabin with beautiful views of the river right outside our front door. The bathhouses were very clean, and the showers had excellent water pressure and got nice and hot. The cabin itself was a big upgrade compared to tent camping. The bed was super comfortable (the pillows could have been better, so I recommend bringing your own).
The fridge and microwave were a nice touch, and we appreciated that linens, towels, and trash pick-up were all provided. The activities each night were fun and cute, and the pool was clean and heated. Overall, the whole place was quiet, the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, and we are already looking forward to coming back!

Beautiful location, convenient to mesa verde and Durango, clean bathrooms, nice mattresses, great staff, and all the conveniences of not pitching your own tent. We highly recommend!

The Art Shack was delightful. The hosts Gretchen and Andre were wonderful hosts. Just large enough to fit a bed and a few chairs... Internet worked great... They had a 5 gallon jug artfully propped up for easy access to water... The composting toilet was the best, clean, creative and scented of cedar. The view from the cedar throne was of the vast expanse of Colorado ranch land with Mesa Verde looming. One warm night , I truly enjoyed sleeping in my bag on the porch... The Vast Silence, the cool air and the Stars were the Stuff of Dreams. We went swimming in nearby lakes, so a shower was not necessary. It was a pleasure taking the back roads to Durango and Mancos. Beauty everywhere in every direction. I know that The Art Shack is just going to get better with our every stay. :-) Greg and Roberta

Weekend Trip to Bright Star Campground
An absolutely beautiful place to stop and rest! I roadtrip for running races and have always made it a point to stop here dating back to 2020. A unique and comfortable experience; this camp offer scenic sunsets, stargazing, a community kitchen, showers, games, a charging station, hammock to read in, rocks to paint, and the most kind camp hosts. I will always stay here and I highly recommend it.

My partner and I ADORED our stay at the Art Shack! Pictures don't do it justice! The property is so quiet and peaceful, with stunning views of the farm and mountains. We found the shack very cozy and had no trouble sleeping. We loved interacting with the friendly farm animals next door. It was such a cute area to relax. Kitchen was fully stocked and had everything we needed to make our breakfast. The tape and marker that was provided to mark our items in the fridge was so thoughtful. And those who were taking care of the location were making sure everything was stocked and trash was taken out. I have never been to a better smelling restroom in a campground ever. It had so many entertainment options even for my kids, from rock painting, playing with the football and ping pong table. The place was awesome for the whole family! We will definitely return!

really pretty campground. the pic in the photo doesn't do it justice. really green and beautiful (orange if you go in the fall like we did) check for winter closures though.
