We are in the rural area between Hesperus, Durango, and Mancos - An easy drive to Durango and its thrift shops, restaurants, galleries, cafes, Animas River and River Trail, and hiking and biking trails. Mancos is filled with art galleries, a wonderful bakery and cafe, beauty, and endless trails. Also within driving distance are Phil's World, Cortez, Sand Canyon, the beautiful La Plata Canyon, Mesa Verde National Park, Lake NIghthorse, and more! There are endless hiking and biking trails within driving distance of the property. Cross country skiing and snowshoeing abound and alpine skiing at Purgatory Ski Resort are popular winter activities. The views of the La Platas and Sleeping Ute are ever changing, awe inspiring, and constant from the deck of The Art Shack. On the property are cats, two dogs, two equines (you will hear our burro braying). Our neighbors have yaks, cattle, goats, sheep, dogs, horses, poultry, and other farm animals. You will also see the wild critters that inhabit our corner of La Plata County. You are welcome to wander our property beyond the Big Stick Ditch but do not go into the pasture with our burro or enter any of the out buildings. Park within steps of the Art Shack, cross the foot bridge over the bubbling irrigation ditch, and you have arrived! Please remove your shoes before entering! There is electricity, a queen bed, rustic chairs inside, an outdoor table and chairs, a composting toilet, a coffee machine, and purified drinking water for your use. An electric heater is supplied during winter months. There is no air conditioning. We are available if needed (unless we are out of town adventuring) but will not expect to interact with you as you relax. No dogs are allowed - 2 people max - No smoking of lit substances inside The Art Shack. Please remove your shoes before entering The Art Shack!

The Art Shack is tucked into a corner of our property next to Big Stick Ditch (our local irrigation ditch), and has incredible, always changing views of the La Plata Mountains and Sleeping Ute. The Art Shack is a small studio style glamping cabin with a queen bed and bedding, electricity, drinking water, an outdoor seating area with a table, a small deck, heating (when required), a coffee machine, and an outdoor enclosed composting toilet. The loft area is good for storing your bags, gear, and supplies. We supply 2 coffee cups and 2 water glasses. There is no air conditioning but a swamp cooler is available during summer months. Wifi may or may not reach The Art Shack. Bring a cooler to store food as there is no refrigerator - Nor is there a hot plate or bbq grill. Grab take out from any of the amazing eateries in Durango, Mancos, or the from Hesperus Station. Take your trash with you upon departure. Our house is 180 feet from the site and is visible from The Art Shack. If we are home, you may see us out and about walking our dogs, gardening, and doing chores. We will wave but will not interact unless you indicate you would like to. On the property are cats, two dogs, 3 equines (you will hear our burros braying), and 3 turkeys. Our neighbors have yaks, cattle, goats, sheep, dogs, horses, poultry, and other farm animals. You will hear them. You will also see the wild critters that inhabit our corner of La Plata County. You are welcome to wander our property beyond the Big Stick Ditch but do not go into the pasture with our burros or enter any of the out buildings.

The Love Shed is tucked into a corner of our rural property and borders pastureland with incredible, always changing views looking toward New Mexico and Arizona from our high altitude property. The Love Shed is a small studio style glamping cabin with a queen bed and bedding, electricity, drinking water, an outdoor seating area with a table, heating (when required), a coffee machine, and an outdoor enclosed composting toilet. We supply 2 coffee cups and 2 water glasses. There is no air conditioning but a swamp cooler or fan is available during summer months. Wifi may or may not reach The Art Shack. Bring a cooler to store food as there is no refrigerator - Nor is there a hot plate or bbq grill. Grab take out from any of the amazing eateries in Durango, Mancos, or from Hesperus Station. Take your trash with you upon departure. Our house is about 400 feet from the site and is partially visible from The Love Shed. I loved my night at Gretchen's property. I was only there for a short time but Gretchen and her pups were very welcoming and the shack was the perfect place to rest for a night before a long drive. Had everything needed for a short stay :)

Quiet and Scenic
The Art Shack - A Tiny Cabin For 2
The art shack is a great spot. The view is gorgeous and even though the temperature got up to 87 it was nice a cool as the shack is in a small group of pine and popular trees. Even if it had been too hot Gretchen provided a cooler with a fan. There's a swing out front that was lovely to sway on while I watched the sunset. It was beautiful and peaceful. In distance you can hear some cows mooing and an occasional donkey song. Everything you want in a weekend away.

The Art Shack - A Tiny Cabin For 2
The Art Shack was delightful. The hosts Gretchen and Andre were wonderful hosts. Just large enough to fit a bed and a few chairs... Internet worked great... They had a 5 gallon jug artfully propped up for easy access to water... The composting toilet was the best, clean, creative and scented of cedar. The view from the cedar throne was of the vast expanse of Colorado ranch land with Mesa Verde looming. One warm night , I truly enjoyed sleeping in my bag on the porch... The Vast Silence, the cool air and the Stars were the Stuff of Dreams. We went swimming in nearby lakes, so a shower was not necessary. It was a pleasure taking the back roads to Durango and Mancos. Beauty everywhere in every direction. I know that The Art Shack is just going to get better with our every stay. :-) Greg and Roberta

The Art Shack - A Tiny Cabin For 2
My partner and I ADORED our stay at the Art Shack! Pictures don't do it justice! The property is so quiet and peaceful, with stunning views of the farm and mountains. We found the shack very cozy and had no trouble sleeping. We loved interacting with the friendly farm animals next door. I highly recommend this property for a unique and beautiful stay, and hope to return someday!
