The best camping in Emma Wood State Beach, CA

Like many Southern California beaches, Ventura's Emma Wood State Beach is a popular spot for swimming, sunbathing, and surfing, offering soft sands and views out over the Channel Islands offshore. It's also a good spot for fishing, and the Ventura River estuary on the southern end of the park attracts all sorts of waterfowl to the area.  The beach also has the remains of a few gun mounts used during World War II. Basic RV camping is available at the North Beach Campground, but those in search of tent camping options will have to look elsewhere.

1. RV campsites can be reserved up to six months in advance on the California State Parks website or over the phone. Same-day reservations are available.
2. It’s a good idea to book well in advance, particularly if visiting in summer or on a weekend.
3. There’s no tent camping at Emma Wood State Beach, so those without RVs to stay in will need to look into area alternatives, such as Hipcamps or private campgrounds.
4. Group tent and RV camping is available at Ventura River Group Camp, about two miles away, with advanced reservation.

Emma Wood State Beach is a year-round destination, and temperatures rarely drop below the upper 40s, even in December and January. The best time of year for swimming and sunbathing is from July through September, when temperatures are pleasant. The beach can get busy on sunny weekends, so come on a weekday when school is in session for the best weather with the fewest crowds.

• The closest place to pick up groceries and supplies is in Ventura, about a five-minute drive down the coast.
• Dogs are allowed in the campground, if leashed, but not on the beach.
• High tides can lead to campground closures, so it's never a bad idea to have a backup plan for spending the night.
• Don't expect a lot of amenities. The RV campground at Emma Wood does not have water, showers, hookups, fire rings, or a dump station, and is designed only for self-contained vehicles.
• The maximum length for RVs in the campground is 40 feet.
