THE AREA: Tucked away under a grove of oak trees, and circled by manzanita trees, sits "Manzanita Cove". A secluded glamping site that contains everything you need, including a private (seasonal pond). This private site is provided with about 1/2 acre of seclusion and equipped with everything needed for an amazing outdoor experience. The total property is about 5 acres, but is shared with our AirBnB: "Julians Red Fox Retreat", which can be booked separately or together with our "Manzanita Cove" glamping site. Because of the shared space, we do limit the number of guests to two, and ask that you be respectful of the space and noise level when booking independently. There are several hammocks around the grounds to relax as well as a few short trails to walk. The property is about a 7 minute drive from downtown Julian and Wynola. WINTER/ SPRING GUESTS: Access to the site is down a bit of a steep dirt road, so we suggest that winter and Spring campers (wet weather) have AWD/4WD or park at the top and walk down. Otherwise is it accessible by most vehicles other parts of the year. Please do not stop on the hill when leaving. You will spin your tires and damage the road.

We are located on the Los Coyotes Indian Reservation, make either a left or right from Hwy 79 onto Camino San Ignacio in Warner Springs, CA, keep to the left at the loop and drive out about 5 miles . When you reach the Ranger Station at the stop sign, make the first left at the sign located at 1600 Camino San Ignacio and drive all the way out to the back. The Happy Camper is located on the left.

Weekend Trip to The Happy Camper

Great place to relax and unwind alone or with guest. My girlfriend and I enjoyed all the amenities the trailer had to offer, and everything work great. The cold water plunge tubs were a great addition and helped with the heat. The remainder of the facility was so cool to see and would recommend this place to anyone.

2 nights at Lake Henshaw hideaway

This place and its host was awesome and perfectly tailored to our needs! The property was private, gorgeous, and well stocked with more than what we needed. Thank god they paved that road too because I wasn't sure if I was gonna make it in my new sedan. Beautiful views day and night, clean lodging, and pur super accomodating host made this the perfect get away. The games and firewood provided was just the cherry on top. Thanks for getting us in on such short notice!!

Great spot for enjoying the outdoors with comfort at a reasonable cost. Loved the patio, hot tub, peace and quiet and the sweet horse. Convenient proximity to San Diego while still feeling like a getaway.

Perfect place to have a moment away and connect with nature. Also perfect to escape the heat of the desert! We stayed with our child in the RV Basecamp which has a patio with a gorgeous pasture view and the shared company of the cow and some wild creatures. Just down the way you can see Mr Bucky, the horse and have a nice little chat with him. Lodging was clean and has everything you need to support your meals preparation. We enjoyed walking around and just hanging out in such a peaceful, beautiful place. Kimberly is very thorough and detailed, I appreciate that a lot. We will check out another property here and stay longer next time!

We loved staying in the real teal camper! The bed in the camper was very comfortable and AC worked great. We had a nice fire in the fire pit and enjoyed the beautiful view. The site was well maintained and very clean. We would strongly recommend this host for your next trip to the Julian/Santa Ysabel area!

Weekend Trip to Hideout Mountain Lodge

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ We recently stayed at Cabin #1 — The Bluebird's Nest — and it was an absolute gem of an experience from start to finish. Hideout Mountain Lodge is the kind of place that immediately feels like a home away from home. Hosts Janice and Mike set the tone right from the start. They were warm, welcoming, and incredibly responsive — exactly the kind of hosts that make you feel like a valued guest rather than just another booking. It's clear they take real pride in what they've created here. The cabin itself was wonderful, but what truly elevated our stay was the unexpected bonus of live music at Josie's Hideout Saloon. The band Gallivant was playing throughout our visit and they were fantastic — the perfect soundtrack to mountain life. It added such a fun, lively energy to the whole experience and was a delightful surprise we didn't see coming. This place is a keeper. The setting, the hospitality, the atmosphere — it all comes together in a way that's hard to find. We will absolutely be coming back and can't recommend Hideout Mountain Lodge highly enough. Do yourself a favor and book a stay — you won't regret it! 🏕️

This was a super cool cabin. Lots of attention to detail with the motif for sure. Beautiful area as well. Would stay there again. Had some difficulty with the wifi. I wasn't concerned as much, but the friend i was with figured out how to get it going. Someone not as tech-oriented might have had to call about that. One thing to note about the setup also, is that the area with the main bed is pretty tight. This didn't bother me, but I could picture someone not as flexible taking issue with this.

Nice dog friendly, but quiet, place not too far from San Diego, with easy to walk trails perfect for our pooch and for us to stretch our legs without being overly strenuous. Beautiful views! We loved that Camp Chester was fenced in so that our 15 month old pup could fully enjoy herself on her first camping trip safely. Jackie the on-site camp host was so nice, just a lovely person. Propane fire pit was great! Only thing to watch out for are the ants, they are big and they bite and they are everywhere, even inside the trailer (keep your clothes & bedding inside your car during the day). Luckily they disappear at night. And don’t try to take a bath, the water heater is only big enough to fill the tub 1/4 full. But enough hot water to take a good shower.

I needed some time away after a long busy season at work. I spent two nights at The Raven and it was a great time. The cabin had everything I needed aside from food and firewood. There were no other guests on the property so I was able to explore around (maybe for future trips?). Its a beautiful place and the view of Lake Henshaw was breathtaking. I loved my experience and look forward to visiting again!

2 nights at Lake Henshaw hideaway

Beautiful get-away! This is certainly a wonderful break from the city at a mountainous location, close to San Diego. You don't need a 4x4 to get up the dirt/gravel road. Tom and Stacy were very hospitable. They left plenty of firewood for the fire pit, snacks and water, towels/washclothes, paper towels and toilet paper, board games, wifi, tv, soap, dishes, plus plenty of extra bedding and sleeping bags, trash bags. The area is fenced in but we warned of poison oak/ivy if we ventured far from the paths and mowed areas. There really aren't hiking trails leading directly from the glamping area, except there a wonderful steep dirt road we walked up many times which rewards an amazing view. Make sure to test the hot water heater beforehand. Also, the water is supplied from an on-site spring well so it's wonderful and plentiful. The only things we would bring to stay again would be binoculars (many birds to see), aluminum foil plus cooking oil to make cooking/warming food on the fire pit easier (there is also a propane grill outside. We did forget our dog's throwing stick but found the area small enough to just throw the ball and let is roll down the steep hill (our labrador absolutely loved staying here and Tom and Stacy were very friendly to her staying as well).

Blair valley is a hidden gem. We love it!

Desert stargazing is great. Plenty of space to disperse camp. We camped in Blair Valley twice and would go back again. Lots of off road trails to explore.

Tamarisk Grove Campground

Tamarisk Grove Campground is about 20 minutes south of Borrego Springs. It sits next to the highway but there’s minimal traffic so it isn’t terribly loud. There are tent sites as well as primitive cabins. Each site has a fire ring and table. There are also flush toilets and paid showers. There is no potable water at this campground - be sure to bring your own. The cabins are simple structures with platforms for sleeping. There are no amenities in the cabins - no electric, no water, no mattress, no linens, etc. The campground is across the street from both the Cactus Loop and Yaqui Well trail heads. We recommend the short Cactus Loop hike over the Yaqui Well hike. Go at sunset to catch the cholla cacti backlit by the sunset.

Tamarisk Grove Campground

Tent or cabins, we've done both and always enjoy this out of the way spot. Keeping the cabin closed in the daytime allows the walls to keep you cool as they retain the cool night temperature. Spring rains bring out gorgeous cactus flowers. Also be sure to see the wonderful metal sculptures in the area.

This campsite is very nice with new facilities ("thanks" to a flash flood a few years ago that wiped out all the old stuff). It's close to trailheads and the mountains block a lot of SoCal's light pollution for perfect night sky viewing. Perfect for someone like me that likes creature comforts.

I was amazed at the beauty and grandeur of this seemingly desolate area. From delicate plant life to geological formations to stunning vistas, there is so much to see and do nearby. Certainly take a hike through Slot Canyon! If you are in the mood for 4WD, California Overland Tours has some great excursions to Font's Point and through the desert badlands and more.

Definitely get one of the ramada sites, which includes a wood structure, a picnic table or two, and a neat old corner fireplace. We pitched our tent outside of the ramada and used the space for eating and hanging out. Good educational info on the nature walk.

If you'll be attempting the many miles of 4WD roads in the park or the adjacent Ocotillo Wells OHV park, the Tom Harrison "San Diego Backcountry" map available at the Visitor Center is indispensable.
