The best camping near Current River State Park guide

Overview

About

Grab a paddle and hit the clear ripples of the Current River. One of MIssouri’s newest state parks protects a scenic patch along the shores. In addition to the river, Current River State Park is also home to two small lakes—all located on a property that was once a corporate retreat. Today’s visitors can enjoy fishing and paddling. Venture out into the further Ozark National Scenic Riverways to explore some of Missouri’s most beautiful waters. Keep your eyes open for the herd of wild horses that roam the shores, photograph historic mills, and make a road trip to find all of the massive springs in the region.

Notable campgrounds

Current River State Park is open for day-use only and does not have a campground. Here are some nearby state parks that offer camping:

  • Best for camping with amenities: Echo Bluff State Park’s Timbuktu Campground offers 60 campsites and 12 walk-in tent sites with partial and full hookups, a rare find in Missouri state parks.
  • Best for rustic camping: The National Park Service operates several campgrounds within the Ozark National Scenic Riverways region with an array of amenities.
  • Best for anglers: Montauk State Park’s campground is within walking distance of some of Missouri’s best trout waters.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Reservations are bookable 12 months in advance at all Missouri State Parks.
  • Create an account on the state park website to book online.
  • Reservations may also be made by phone.
  • The state parks in this region are especially popular in the summer months and on weekends and holidays in spring and fall. Advance reservations are usually required.
  • Walk-up reservations are accepted for non-booked sites.

When to go

Summer is peak season in this river region, as the daytime temperatures are warm enough to take a splash in the cool waters. Temperatures peak in the 90s in July and August. Spring often brings the heaviest rains, which may affect water levels, especially in April and May. The springtime temperatures are often comfortable for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. With proper precautions, fall and winter are serene times to take a float trip, with autumn bringing color to the woodlands. Campers will find freezing temperatures and occasional snows in winter.

Know before you go

  • Though the Current River flows through the park, there are no boat ramps.
  • The upper lake is open for fishing year round, but the lower lake closes from November through April.
  • Visitors can tour the historic structures that remain from when the property hosted the Alton Club. Call the park for details.
  • This region has low light pollution, making it a good place to view the night sky.
  • Cell signal may be limited in this area. Plan ahead.
