Splitrock Farm and Retreat started in January 2021 after a global search of a place to set roots, live off the land, and create an amazing place for recreation, relaxation, and rejuvenation. Splitrock was part of a 160-acre avocado farm that prospered from 1970 to 2017, generating over 1million pounds of avocados per year until the previous owners switched off the water in 2017. Ben purchased 101 acres in 2021 with plans to harvest the dead avocado trees for firewood and replant with organic, sustainable crops such as grapes, citrus trees, and flowers. Splitrock's attraction comes from its unique groves, magnificent granite boulders, and sweeping vistas. Mixed within the avocado groves are several ancient groves and solitary trees that include 150+ foot tall pines, hundreds of old oaks, and soaring palms. Freckled throughout the hillsides are thousands of humongous granite boulders, offering a prehistoric feel to the landscape. Above all, Splitrock offers unrivaled views. Over 40 miles of coastline includes views to Point Loma, the Carlsbad power station, and the Pendleton Hospital. To the northeast are views of near 11K foot snowy peaks of San Jacinto and San Gorgonio, with rolling hills of De Luz and Fallbrook in the foreground.

Airstream Luna at Cloudcrest

TL;DR I loved it, great way to ease yourself into camping and very fun for a solo trip. The drive out is difficult and deep in the mountains. Narrow dirt roads. The camper was awesome. Comfortable bed, kitchenette is fully stocked with silverware and cookware. No problems with the bathroom and water supply. The fridge is not very good. It's supposed to be propane-powered, but I had to ask the host to pack it with ice repeatedly. And I had problems with power. The host was kind enough to provide a replacement battery, but the battery didn't stay charged throughout the night. And in case the listing doesn't make it obvious, this is part of a larger property with a farm and plenty of goats. It was very funny to see a herd of goats walking through my campsites one morning. Very cool. Also be careful of ants. Ants have a tendency to swarm the trash, and they got into my car. I was there for a solo trip, and I drove out every day to do things in San Diego. It was too hot during the day to stay in the camper. But the nights were comfortable.

Spots offer great privacy

Horizons

Spot is amazing. The sites are really far away from each other which allows for awesome privacy. The water spigots and restrooms are kind of far from the tent camping spots. 5-10 minute walk depending on what spot you have. The camp store is awesome and has a lot of stuff you might have forgotten at home. Other than that I would definitely go there again.

This campground is amazing, not just for the fantastic panoramic views from various spots on this land but the overall feel of the place. We stayed at the Sleeping Owl site, here like most other sites at Split rock Farm and Retreat, you have what feels like the entire place to yourself. Whilst there were other campers nearby you just wouldn't have known unless you walked around. Very interesting place, loved the showers set in the natural rocks and all bathrooms were very clean. Great experience, will be going again soon!

Absolutely LOVED this location! We stayed one night in spot 9 at the group camp as we were passing through from Iowa to see the ocean and this place was better than seeing the ocean! Best shower I’ve ever taken.

The site was very secluded, huge in size, and peaceful. We only saw a few people pass through. The views were gorgeous! It was a bit tricky to get to the site due to the narrow and dirty pathways, but we got there just fine! There’s really no shade, so make sure you bring a canopy. We stayed 3 days and 2 nights and it was perfect. There was a bit of an ant problem, so make sure you wrap up all your food and snacks! Overall, a good place to camp. Would recommend and stay agin!

The Quails nest was the perfect place for a weekend camping. The place was private and quiet. The horse, donkey, pigs, dogs, chicken and goats were a marvelous cherry on the pie. Definitely recommend.

Airstream Luna at Cloudcrest

We had a blast at SplitRock Farm! Thank you Ben for the hospitality (you gave us fresh eggs directly from the chicken coop!). We stayed at the Airstream Luna and we had the most amazing time exploring around the campsite (which has great views) and around the farm. We also did fire and roasted some polish klobasas. We definitely recommend and we would love to come back.

The whole property is gorgeous and super welcoming. The sites had great privacy and set up very well. The only thing that put a dampening on things was at this specific campsite the ants were insane. They had a whole highway on our bench searching for stuff before we even brought the food out. Aside from that I am obsessed with this place and would love to come back to try another site!

Sleeping Owl Rock

Splitrock is a beautiful and unique site close enough to local shops but remote enough to feel like you are boondocking. My total rig length is 32 feet with suv and trailer. The sites are easily maneuverable and private. Site does have water, toilets, and outdoor shower as listed. Water was not obvious near my site, but I found it eventually without asking. All good for us who are completely self sufficient but for others, the amenities are a bit under maintained and should be updated/repaired given the listing. The day we left, we ventured the site near the shop. On the peak are some incredible sites that we would have gone to at night. I would recommend the host share these points.

Redtail Rock

Amazing property! However, Redtail Rock is basically an ant hill. Another review mentioned ants; our experience with the ants was horrendous. Our trailer was INFESTED within 12 hours and there were ants literally all throughout the site - it’s a large site. I wouldn’t recommend Redtail Rock until that colony is dealt with because it truly ruined our stay. Secondly, there’s not much shade at this spot. The property does have some pretty awesome sites and views though. I’d at least want to check out their other spots.

I accidentally booked the wrong date but immediately asked the host for help. He said u sure no problem hipcamp can give u a refund since you cant come the same day and it was a mistake… i did that they said to ask him. He kept saying sure sure sure until I could not do anything. I feel he used the ai to take my money and time and confused me by not treating me like a human being or providing clear info/reading my request. I work in travel i dont treat guests this way. If there is a mistake i try to help. Ill never visit a business who steals sorry.

We just wrapped up our second Fourth of July stay here, and it was just as amazing as the first! 🇺🇸🏕️ This campground has become one of our favorite places to make summer memories. The grounds are clean and well maintained and the atmosphere is perfect for relaxing and enjoying the outdoors. Spending the Fourth of July here for the second year in a row has become a tradition we look forward to. The beautiful surroundings and family-friendly environment make it such a special place to celebrate. We can’t wait to come back again next year. Highly recommend this campground to anyone looking for a fun, peaceful, and memorable camping experience!

The Oak Grove Communal Camping

Splitrock Farm and Retreat is a gorgeous place to spend time and the Oak Grove camp ground has ample room to spread out. Hiking and views are wonderful. Be aware that the retreat has improvements to make and a couple safety issues to work on though. Signage needs a lot of improvement and one of the roads on the retreat that isn’t marked can be very dangerous. If you are planning a trip to Splitrock, know that some of the roads are rough and there are a lot of ants. Look at the map that can be found on their main webpage and familiarize yourself with where things are beforehand. If you want to reach a camp host they usually respond to messages through Hipcamp but it can take many hours.

Logistically, the place is fine. I liked hiking around on the trails that traverse the property. Energetically, the place feels a bit given up on - a passion project that someone has lost their passion for. Broken hot water heater in the shower, some garbage laying around the campgrounds, etc, but, again, the landscape is super cool and the Oak Grove is an excellent site for a large group of campers.

Hilltop Hideout

Hilltop Hideout had absolutely beautiful views!! Tent camped on top pad with plenty of room. Lower pad would be okay for you to a mid sized rig. Very private site, only about 3-4 minute walk to flush toilets. Everyone was very friendly. Host was quick to reply to a message. VERY dog-friendly property. Fun hiking & farm animal encounters. The guardian dogs are very sweet too.

The whole reason we came was for the goat yoga. I paid & booked it a week in advance, but I couldn’t find any info on their IG, website, or guidelines about where it was on the farm. I messaged the host the morning of the yoga class and he told me they had canceled it because there were no baby goats. Which I found out from other campers that was a lie. They had asked about goat yoga & were told another story, “the yoga teacher had canceled” and they were told days before the class! Why couldn’t he let me know? It ruined the whole trip for me, I drove two hours out of my way for the goat yoga only. He had an entire week to explain that it was canceled. He refunded the yoga & that’s it. There were some campers with their dogs off leash which was strictly forbidden in the host’s rules. We also woke up to a jeep IN our campsite who had set up their tent and everything about ten feet from my van. The host did nothing about this. The service isn’t great there so if you need to access the map (you will) you might not be able to. No zero waste receptacles, except dumpsters near the entrance very far from campsites & because of this, ants are a MAJOR problem here - There were thousands in my van when I woke up, crawling all over me and my dogs. There are still some in my van now too. The “hot shower” didn’t work and was cold. Have fun finding water spigots 👎 The road to get there needs a disclaimer for big rigs - there are jackknife turns. It’s pretty, but the hospitality was not

What an awesome location! This was mine and my wife's first time at this campsite and we absolutely loved it! We'd definitely book again and come back and bring more friends to enjoy this location. We were camped at the Oak Grove Communal area, lots of space to roam around, restroom was nice and clean. There's a shower but the hot water function didnt work but it was still nice to have a shower at camp. Definitely must try!
