When to Go
In the peak summer season, Montgomery Bell State Park enjoys sunny days with temperatures typically in the 80s. If you visit between Memorial and Labor day weekends, you can cool off at the swim beach on Lake Acorn. Winter temperatures can drop to the high 40s, but there are plenty of activities, such as birdwatching and hiking, that can be done year-round.
Know Before You Go
- Backcountry camping is allowed on the overnight trail with a backcountry camping permit—call to reserve a shelter.
- You can rent paddling equipment at the swim beach for use on Lake Acorn.
- The park’s camp store has gear, snacks, and other camping supplies.
- Only certified heat-treated firewood is allowed to enter the park.

Hikers can follow some of the 19 miles of trails that wind their way through the 3,850-acre park’s lush forests and past rocky rivers—trails range from gentle to moderate levels of difficulty and include a 10-mile overnight route—while bikers can enjoy around 23 miles of dirt mountain bike trails through thickly forested hills. Three lakes are nestled into the park, providing opportunities for swimming, boating and paddling on calm waters and there’s even a golf course. Montgomery Bell Campground has 109 sites for tents and RVs.
