Boondocker sight available, completely private butted up against the Comanche national grasslands and within minutes of the pinon canyon maneuver site. Horse pasture available for an additional small fee weekly or monthly. Dogs and other pets welcome but no aggressive dogs. I'm on site in the event of an emergency and have a mud truck that can get out should rain or snow make roads unpassable. This place is accessible without 4 wheel drive almost year round except if heavy rain or snow turn the road to a grease pit The property is within two hours drive to pikes peak, cripple creek turquoise mine, multiple gold panning sites, the royal gorge, Canon city and many other places. Local attractions to include the Colorado wolf and wildlife center, balloon rides and breakfast sunrise rides, helicopter rides, white water rafting, hiking, Rockhound opportunities, wildlife viewing, trantula watching, only 150 miles from Las Vegas Nevada and within a couple hours of Santa Fe NM. On the original Santa Fe trail route. Chuckewagon suppers. Campfire singalongs and storytelling available through the host for a small additional fee. Gocart racing and cliffside four wheel drive tours can be arranged with the host. The opportunity to drive a mud truck can also be arranged with appropriate insurance and security deposit. Leather craft classes can be arranged as well guided hikes for the timid. Additional classes like pottery and jewelry making can also be arranged. Horseback riding lessons might be available in the future but are currently not available. The saddle gypsy museum will be open on Mondays. The museum is operated by the host and contains saddles by assorted famous saddle makers and the host provides museum tours free of charge on every Monday from 10 am to 3 pm. I think that about covers everything. I might do something like a goat milking or cactus jelly and wine making class to. Rates are a hundred a week or 325 a month. Stays less than a week are available at 20 dollars a night. This is a dry camp so only self-contained RV boondocking is allowed. I currently have I spots that provide each camper privacy and beautiful views. Most RVs can get in but it is 10 miles off the pavement on minimum maintenance roads. A video of the road tough spots can be provided if a boondocker is unsure their rig will go. My own rig is a 15000 pound Thor toyhauler fifth wheel 34 foot pulled in by a non 4 wheel drive truck with no problem at all.

The best camping near Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site guide

Overview

About

Before the Wild West, there was Bent's Old Fort near the Arkansas River in La Junta, Colorado. The site was one of the first European settlements out west. It served as a peaceful trading post for trappers, traders, travelers, and members of the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes. Although "fort" is in its name, this adobe building wasn't necessarily a military installation. The U.S. Army didn't use the fort full-time until 1846.

Originally built in 1833, you can travel to Bent's Old Fort to see a reconstruction of the original structure. The building is unmistakable. It's the muddy-brown building with a round tower on two corners. It's like a short castle with an open courtyard on the inside.

Take a tour to see what trading was like in the early 1800s, before a flood of settlers came here after the Civil War. White settlers traded their goods with Native American tribes who supplied buffalo robes and buffalo skins. Inside the fort, see where people kept their horses in the shade and out of the hot sun. Rooms, where people slept, had wooden windows for air circulation, but they were expertly hidden beneath the main walls of the fort for protection and comfort.

When you're here, talk to some of the guides dressed in period costume. They truly bring this remote outpost to life. One of the men might represent William or Charles Brent, two brothers from St. Louis who went west to seek their fortunes. They built this fort in Colorado as a place for anyone and everyone, regardless of color, creed or ethnic background.

The fort was a vibrant place until 1849 when it was abandoned after 16 years. Too bad, because the history of the west might have happened differently had Bent's Old Fort survived.
