- One kayak and one canoe are available for rent, however trasportation is not provided at this time. Contact your hosts for details.
- A picnic table, fire pit, and port-a-john are available at the campsite for your use.
-Please note, the campsite is located off a dirt road. Four wheel drive is recommended but not required.
- Hunting is prohibited at the campsite and the surrounding 10 acres, however hunters may be present in other areas of the mountain during the fall. Always be aware of your surroundings.
- Wifi is not available, however there is adequate cell phone reception for all common carriers.
-As always, leave no trace. A dumpster is available along the road for disposing of your trash as you leave.

Visit the site ranked by Hipcampers as one of the top three sites in West Virginia. Pitch your tent on a wooded mountain knoll overlooking the Cacapon River surrounded by the Allegheny Mountains as far as you can see. The Cacapon River is a hidden scenic gem and the cleanest river in West Virginia. This is rugged West Virginia at its best. Wildlife abounds and it is common to see Bald Eagles, Black Bears, and Whitetail Deer.
If relaxing on the ridge line and enjoying the views are not enough, hike down to the river via the powerline cut or trails and swim, paddle, or fish (WV license required...one day passes are available online). You can also hike the creek running through the deep hollow, which follows the state access road while enjoying dark Hemlock woods and shale cliffs. If you like to mountain bike, you will find the mountain access roads and trails offer you some back country riding fun.
The campsite has nice level areas for pitching a tent and an established fire ring and picnic table. Trails allow one to hike in or drive (a four wheel drive is necessary to access the ridge line campsite). The campsite is very private, but it's possible you will see a friendly neighbor pass by on the trail or see folks staying at the cabin in the valley along the river flats if you go down to the river or you can get a bird's eye view of cabins in the valley across the river from the top. The campsite is no trace so you must bag out all garbage and waste. Cat holes and such are not permitted so campers must bring and use a camp toilet. During exceptionally dry periods, open fire restrictions may be put in effect.
You will need a four wheel drive vehicle to access the site. If not, or in inclement weather (snow or heavy rains), you can hike in from the state road where the access road begins.

The property's history dates back to pre-European settlement and was originally inhabited by Native Americans with archaeological evidence dating back at least 10,000 years. After European settlement, numerous
of battles were fought in the area during the French and Indian War, American Revolution, and it was even a cross-roads for armies during the Civil War. Farming, sustenance farming, and logging were the primary industries throughout the region. Later, during the Industrial Revolution, the river, limestone, charcoal, and iron ore from the area fueled a local iron bloomery, which the area, "Bloomery," is still named.
The land you are camping on was nearly completely logged over the last hundred years, but a few old growth trees can still be found throughout the mixed hardwoods forest. On the way to the campsite you will also pass the old original school house (now a hunting cabin) located on a neighbor's adjoining property. There are still a few old timers left that attended the one room schoolhouse as children, but the building predates them by many years. There is also an old Methodist Cemetery located on the property (not near the campsite) that dates back to the 1700s. If you happen to find this site, please do not disturb it.

This property and farm has been in our family for 3 generations. In 1964 my grandfather started the campground due to limited camping at New Germany. My father tells stories of it being filled with guests all summer long! Over the years there was few upgrades and now it's in need of a facelift. Landscaping, electric upgrades and bathhouse remodels were completed Spring 2021. We will continue to renovate in phases it's been a labor of love, but you can still see the beauty of this rural location and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Lots of trees, shade and nature. It's located near New Germany State Park, 1.5 miles by car, less than a mile by foot. The state park has a lake and hiking trails. Garrett County has so much to offer, waterfalls, lakes, hiking, skiing, Amish gifts, history, fresh air, beautiful scenery. The campground was first started in 1964 by my grandparents, we are currently completing renovations in phases.

The Byrd's Nest is a river front, primitive campsite on the scenic Cacapon River in Great Cacapon, WV. The property is very secluded, but only 2 hrs from D. C. and Baltimore. The space can accommodate 5 tents comfortably or a few small campers (w/o hookups). Please note- I only book one group at a time. You'll have plenty of privacy! Spend your day bird watching on the river deck, put up your hammock and chill, go hiking or mountain biking at Cacapon State Park, take the kayaks out and paddle around, go fishing, or take a float trip. I can provide info on put in/take out spots depending on how long you'd like to float. I have 3 kayaks available for your use, or BYO if you'd like to venture further outside of the property lines. There is one big fire ring for cooking and/or bonfires, along with a large stationary stand up charcoal camp grill. There is also a small communal shed down at camp that contains extra camping supplies, etc.. feel free to use use and put back and or contribute to it! :)
This spot is close by to Berkeley Springs, Paw Paw Tunnel, Cacapon State Park, and other nature preserves. More hiking, biking, restaurants, spas, antiquing- all within a beautiful 20 minute drive if you wish to venture out.
There is a cabin on the property. I will more often be home than not, I will communicate with you about that around your stay. Sometimes I"ll come down to the river frontage if I drop in for a float .Also, we all get around on four wheelers and UTV's. So you will hear them from time to time. If I am home, please feel free to come up if you have any concerns/questions or to say hi! :)
*Please note, you can normally get to this site without a 4 wheel drive vehicle. However, when the river is high it will sometimes flood the low water bridge where it crosses the Cacapon. If this is the case during your stay, I will provide all necessary information regarding projected river levels and directions. I will also offer a full refund if the bridge is impassable.

While my RV is down, anyone with a camper/RV/Van that has it's own bathroom can use this site. Plus, any one that wants to come out for a day visit and just relax and walk and light a fire and get naked is welcome. Please DM me for this sort of enjoyment! It's time to try to find out how nice it is to camp at your own campsite amidst 6 wooded acres alongside Bear Creek, with Bear Stream running through the middle of it. Quiet and private, with paths and trails on the property. Dry firewood is provided there at the campsite. There is a charcoal grill ready to use, though you must bring your own charcoal. Camping by the creek, listening to the water running is the way to do it. The site is also very private and naturist ready, and a perfect place for your dogs or your children to run free, so it's time to get back to nature. Since guests have the whole site, they can decide whether it's clothing optional or not. With the new boat launch site near Capon Bridge, on the Cacapon river nearby, and a few more upriver towards Wardensville, it's a great site for kayakers or canudists to plan river outings and stay nearby. There are multiple places to set up tents, or hammocks, either at the main campfire ring, or at several sites away from the main campsite. Throughout spring, rear wheel drive is recommended, and 4 wheel drive might be needed, and during the summer if heavy rain is expected. I would not recommend front wheel drive cars being used there in the spring, unless it is dry out. The RV is limited to two adults, and two to three children, for sleeping, due to it's size. Heading west, is the Canaan Valley and Davis and Thomas, WV. Both towns have many things worth visiting and are close together, and Winchester is 30 minutes away for supplies.

We really enjoyed our weekend at Bear Creek. With only one campsite on the six-acre property, it’s a great place if you’re looking for privacy and don’t want other campers nearby. The site sits down in a wooded ravine near the creek, and the woods and terrain make for a really pretty setting.
The host was very kind and gave us a tour when we arrived, then gave us our space for the rest of the weekend. He checked in through the Hipcamp app when a storm was approaching and also asked if we needed more firewood. The complimentary firewood was a nice touch, and it burned great.
The site has chairs, end tables, a picnic table, charcoal grill, and fire ring. There are also a couple walking paths around the property, although they are very short—the longest only took us a few minutes to walk.
Privacy was probably the biggest plus for us. The host’s house is at the front of the property and the campsite is all the way at the rear. You can see a portion of the house from the campsite and occasionally hear neighboring dogs, but otherwise the site feels very secluded. Being clothing optional was also a big plus for us and made it a comfortable place to relax and enjoy the privacy.
The road down to the campsite may be challenging for some vehicles, but that was actually one of my favorite parts of the property.
We had 1 bar of AT&T 5G if we needed to use our phones. We would stay here again.

What an incredible place. If you’re looking for private, non-traditional campground, this is it! Perfectly graveled, leveled site. Water, electric and the view… wow. We absolutely enjoyed every second of our stay there. Berkeley Springs and Cacapon State Park is a short drive. Great time at both.
Mason was a great host. Met up when we got there and he showed us to our site. Gave a quick run down of the do’s & don’ts and let us enjoy the place. Exactly as mentioned on Hip-camp and pictures are true to life. What a beautiful place. Will definitely be back. True gem of a private piece of paradise. 👍.

Jim is a wonderful host and the campsite is just as advertised. Jim ensured all needs were met, had plenty of firewood at the campsite, and the RV with a flush toilet was clean and comfortable.
This campsite is easy to get to and very secluded. Many beautiful trees create great canopy and aesthetic. The site felt safe and comfortable and was able to enjoy my clothes free camp without worry or concern.

The view is spectacular!!! We took our dog and there were trails everywhere. It was quiet and peaceful. What a great get away. Definitely recommend and we will be back .

Great experience overall. Mason was an excellent host, friendly and welcoming. Our site couldn't have been better and the view was amazing. Although we didn't need it, was nice touch to have a water hose and electrical chord available to use. We had an issue one evening with very loud music coming from site next to use. I sent a message to Mason and he had it resolved within 30 minutes. If you enjoy peace, serenity, and an amazing view then Grouseland is for you. We'll definitely be back!

Our campsite was great and had everything we needed and wanted. A picnic table, bench, charcoal grill, fire pit, and hammock. Wonderful details that made us feel at home. Mason was helpful and great at communication and we even got to know Murray and Jane a little bit when they welcomed us to their home to take shelter at when a storm came through. The property is well maintained and easy to navigate. Highly recommend!

What an amazing place to get away from it all. Quiet and secluded, Jim’s oasis in the West Virginia woods is worth the drive! Nestled in next to a babbling creek, we hung out naked under the stars and amongst nature. It was truly amazing.

Seriously, that camping trip was something else. The views were absolutely breathtaking, and there were so many trails to hike. Plus, provided firewood to burn was a major bonus. I'm already dreaming about going back. It was truly one of the best outdoor adventures I've ever had.

Site was fantastic! Very private and great setting. Site was well maintained—fire ring was awesome. Would highly recommend, we would love to return here. Host’s directions and recommendations were super helpful and spot-on. We also hiked the nearby rail trail and would have explored more if we had the time.
