Wolftrap Farm was owned by James & Dolley Madison during their time, and they called it Black Meadow. Their home, Montpelier, is just across the mountains you see from the campsite. It passed through the hands of various local farmers during the 19th & 20th centuries, and for many years was a dairy farm. It became primarily a horse farm in the 1970's, when it was owned by the German Von Wulffen family.The Cuthrell family from the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area acquired the farm in 2003 and converted it to a resort farm, featuring upscale vacation homes. Beginning around 2013, the farm started morphing into primarily a wedding venue, and now hosts over 60 weddings each year.

Our property was a small family farm for several generations. Our family purchased the property about 18 years ago. Since we are not farmers but love living here, the question became "What would be the best use for the land?" Living in a scenic area and already being in the vacation rental business on some other family property answered the question. We decided to share the beautiful view and seclusion of our area with others.
Our goal was to keep the cost of building down so that we could pass on the savings to you so that you would not have to be rich to enjoy our lovely area. This inspired the idea of a glamping cabin. The cabin is actually a repurposed office building that was built about the time this property was purchased by our family. We moved it to the present location and completely remodelled it in 2018 and added the bathroom. For 4 years, guests enjoyed an off-the-grid experience.
In 2023, when we began work on the glamping dome (stay tuned--coming soon!!), we decided to add electricity, running water, and a hot tub to the tiny house!
We hope you enjoy the cabin (and, soon, the dome) and the stunning view from them as much as we enjoy sharing this beautiful spot with you!
Note: The Charming Glamping Cabin is at a totally different property. That property also has a section that used to be farmed. Now a lot of it is forest. We purchased the property around 2000. This cabin was built approx. 10 years later. At that point, the cabin was a tiny economy cabin with a sofa bed. However, it seemed most folks preferred comfort over economy, so in 2020, we added a bump-out to the side of the cabin so there would be room for a queen bed. Guests have loved the improvement. (:

My friend and I had a great time staying here! Mark was very hospitable and made things very easy for us. The area is stunning with the fall leaves. Other than some cows and a rooster far off on a different property, it was very quiet and peaceful the whole time. The bed was very soft, and the coffee Mark gave to us was the best I've had in awhile! Be sure to use smaller pieces of wood for the hot tub so it heats up faster. A relaxing and lovely time, highly recommend!

The wooded campsite, quiet seclusion, and natural beauty were wonderful! My family of two adults, two teens, and a dog had an amazing time. We hiked the property. And Mark and his family were fantastic hosts! They were responsive to all questions before we arrived and during our stay. They met us with an ATV, trailer, and wagon to transport our cooler and vast amount of equipment to our site. Mark shared a list of activities in the area. And Mark's family was very generous with their time during our stay. They gave us fishing tutorials, supplied the fishing equipment, and invited us to fish their well-stocked pond. Both my son and I caught our first fish! Mark gave us guidance on how to clean the fish and cook them up. They were delicious! Mark and his wife Emily also offered equipment that we had forgotten (e.g., oven mitts). Plus, the site had nice amenities for a family who likes true camping but also enjoys some extras. It had a lovely, large tent with a bed that sleeps two. We brought an additional 3/4-man tent that we erected. Although we brought our own cast iron pans, utensils, etc., Mark provided some of those too! Plus, there was an abundant supply of long roasting forks (for hotdogs, s'mores). The firepit was lovely, and Mark provided plenty of firewood. The toilet was very rustic/basic, but it was nicely enclosed in a tent for privacy. Mark had run a water line and electric cord to the site, which helped with cleaning, washing up, & charging phones. A great time!!

Great little camping spot with everything you need. Hot tub gets very hot, enjoyed it very much. Tent and bed are comfy. One other campsite nearby but barely noticed. A couple of little trails to wander around and a hammock to read a book in. The creek wasn’t running this time around but I imagine it’d make it even better. Mark is super kind and easy to reach if needed. Helped bring things to campsite with cart also. Would recommend/come back :)

2 nights at Nicholson’s Wonder Forest
Had such a wonderful stay! The property is peaceful & relaxing (felt very secluded/private but not secluded enough you’re afraid lol), and the wood-fired bath was a unique highlight. Mark is a fantastic host- friendly, kind, quick to reply, and very helpful with local recommendations. He even helped us get our gear to the site with his four-wheeler, which was much appreciated. Both sites are walk in as mentioned. It’s a maintained trail that’s not difficult. A few roots here and there to step over but no inclines.
We stayed at the campsite with the yurt which had a bed/ bedding provided and extras like basic cookware, a pop-up toilet tent with a camp toilet, and a wagon for hauling gear. We packed out on our own at the end, but based on our interactions, I’m sure he would’ve happily helped us load up if we’d asked.
The location is also fantastic- there are a couple of nice wineries close by (with even more we’re excited to try next time), some really charming small towns nearby worth exploring, and a national park not too far away. Overall, this is such a great spot and we’re already looking forward to coming back!

As we fled from Hurricane Erin, this mountain retreat was the perfect escape. The owners were incredibly responsive, and we had no trouble checking in. The house itself was spotless and had everything we needed—all we had to bring were our personal items and food. Tucked away on a secluded mountaintop, it was a fantastic spot to continue our summer vacation. The house even had basic supplies for the kids, which was a huge bonus.

Absolutely loved the copper hot tub 🛀 ♨️ 🔥
Host was attentive and property was well kept. Site was far enough away from everything to be able to be completely private yet still connected if you wanted to be. Host provided a cart for transporting supplies to the campsite and checked in the first night to make sure we didn't need anything else. We will definitely keep the site in mind for when we go camping again.

Great site, quiet and spacious, beautiful views of the mountains. Clean restroom/shower facilities conveniently located near tent. Tent setup was very comfortable with a bed, a/c, grill, table. Quiet, and loved having the horses nearby. Glad that there was a fridge to keep perishables, and other supplies like plates, etc. Ladies room was awesome.

Lovely July 4th getaway. Just what I was hoping for out of the experience. I didn’t even get a. chance to use the hot tub, which our neighbors said was great.

Frogsong was an incredible stay. Maybe our favorite ever actually. The house itself is sounique and beautiful, and the stream that is located only a couple of minutes away captured my heart and soul. There are very very few places as magical as frogsong, and even less that are available to stay at.

This is a beautiful farm. The setting was very peaceful. It was really cool having access to a full kitchen within just a few steps. The showers and restrooms were clean and convenient! As it ended up being near record breaking temps during our stay- our host Tina had the AC running in the tent, ahead of our arrival to help cool it down a bit. We look forward to visiting Wolftrap Farm during the fall season!

Weekend Trip to Glamping on Timber Ridge
This cabin is truly amazing and worth the drive. Well kept and has all the necessities including cooking essentials. Minutes from Seneca Rocks while also being secluded and private. Loved the walking path where we could see horses from at dusk. Will definitely recommend to others.

2 nights at Love Ridge Mountain Lodging
The cottage is super cozy, clean, and welcoming! There is a fire pit and grill (charcoal BBQ) available on site. I enjoyed sitting out in the porch and cooking with my portable stove top. The induction works well, but it’s a 2 burner with limited capacity, so plan accordingly. Our hosts were gracious and the entire setting was picturesque and quiet. Would stay again!

This campsite is wonderful!! Mark was a gracious and flexible host when I changed the arrival plan around a little, and was so kind to offer us camping gear if we needed some. I loved the table and chairs that was set up for us and the fire pit was awesome. The real gem was the location! It is very secluded and right next to a babbling brook. There were so many birds and we slept so soundly listening to the trees and running water. Mark provided tons of firewood for us too! The campsite had a compost toilet available but we were only there one night so we didn’t have to use that amenity. I can’t wait to come back and bring family and friends! Thanks Mark!!
