All hail William Smallwood. Not only did he serve in the Revolutionary War, but he left behind the ideal escape from beltway chaos. Just 40 minutes outside DC, Smallwood State Park is a 628 acre paradise with a marina, boat launching ramps, a picnic area, camping area, pavilions, a recycled tire playground and nature trails. We are a Nature Retreat bordering Nature Conservancy land along a tributary and up and down the Rappahannock River. You can hike along the stream down to the river and up and down the river. You can fish and float the river. There are no trails so a moderate level of fitness and comfort in the forest is needed. You can follow the water ways but it is wilderness. Camping there is primitive but available or you can camp or glamp at Earthwalk Ways Retreat. We are also adjacent to a 50 acre farm on the other side of the creek that is available for hiking. There is a reservoir nearby as well. We are in the midst of the suburbs not far from Fredericksburg, which has some great historic and community places of interest. Our facilities are private and we only rent to one or 2 guests at a time. You can glamp in a trailer, or car camp in a nice campground with power and water or you can go primitive and pack in. All spaces include access to our classical 11 circuit labyrinth and backyard gardens where you can enjoy zen rock garden and other contemplative nature crafts. There are some great extra's here as well including an outdoor jacuzzi and indoor infrared sauna and massage chair. These spa features are another great way to get your zen on here. I offer Forest Bathing and individual retreat support sessions, an quarterly sweat lodge and also vision quest support if people would like to experience a solo nature immersion feast.

This is the best Hipcamp I’ve been to, the ambiance and decor in the cabin was perfect it is secluded no one will bother you here. Down the road is the lake, caught 4 bass in 15 minutes and chilled in the paddle boat. It’s West Virginia at its finest and the owner is so nice and accommodating! I’ll definitely be back and will keep in touch.

1 night at A 1000 Miles from Nowhere Cabin

We would 100% recommend staying here! The cabin was exactly what we were looking for. It was secluded while still being close to all the areas we wanted to explore. It was clean, thoughtfully furnished, and felt comfortable from the moment we arrived. We’d love to come back during the colder months to enjoy the indoor fireplace. The host was incredibly kind and accommodating throughout our stay. He provided firewood and water, which was greatly appreciated. The bathroom was well-maintained. You may even see a deer walk by as youre doing your business! If you’re lucky enough to have good weather, the private lake is a huge highlight. The water was warm and small boats were available for guests to use. During our three-night stay, we saw an amazing variety of wildlife. There are also trails nearby for you to walk! The back porch was one of our favorite spots to relax. If you’re not in the mood to build a fire, there’s a propane fireplace, a hammock, and plenty of comfortable space to unwind. It was the perfect place to sit back, enjoy the scenery, and soak in the quiet surroundings.

We booked this cabin nestled on a vast, beautiful property, and it completely exceeded our expectations. The cabin itself was thoughtfully designed with a whimsical charm that made the entire stay feel magical and cozy. The surrounding land was incredible — expansive trails winding through untouched flora and fauna, leading to peaceful streams and giving the whole place the feel of a private national park. One of the highlights was being able to explore it all with our dog, which made the experience even more special. Our host was exceptionally gracious, communicative, and attentive, making sure we had everything we needed throughout our stay. We truly felt fortunate to experience such a peaceful and unique getaway, and we’re already looking forward to returning again soon!

The lodge was great for a mixed aged group and was well stocked for a place tucked in the woods. That said, some of the kids were not used to being surrounded by so much nature and had issues adjusting to sharing space with bugs. So maybe talk to them about the difference between hotels in a city and lodges in the woods. ;-)

Weekend Trip to Camp Kilo

A beautiful mountain escape backing right up to Shenandoah National Park. The setting alone makes this place feel special, and the cabin absolutely lives up to it. The drive in is about 15 minutes along a dirt road with a steeper final stretch, but it’s very manageable and worth it for the privacy. You’re also only about 25 minutes from the Swift Run Gap entrance, making park access easy. The cabin had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The mountain themed decor made it feel warm and inviting, the cots were surprisingly comfortable, and having dog beds already there was a huge bonus. Our dogs loved it. If the upper tent campsite isn’t booked, which you can reserve as well, you might have the opportunity to hike the half mile trail up to it and take in a gorgeous overlook. It’s about a 30 minute uphill hike with roughly 500 feet of elevation gain and well worth it. We stayed during some on and off rain and still had a great trip. Even without a view at the top, it was still a really enjoyable hike. The nearest grocery store is about 25 minutes away in Stanardsville at the Greene Great Valu, which was convenient for anything we needed. Make sure to check out South River Falls, one of the most beautiful waterfall hikes in Shenandoah National Park. Overall, a peaceful and scenic stay. We would definitely come back!

Was an amazing campsite would 100% recommend. Easy to chat with but would recommend having a car good a taking deep bumps and incline but my Honda civic made it up fine as long as you drive the throttle easy. Owners are great people and made our trip easy

Awesome camp site, you definitely need 4wd, the dirt road to get there is 2 miles long and pretty rocky. The site was amazing though and super quiet and peaceful

2 nights at Riverdale Farm- River Glamping

Our weekend to unplug was perfect. There was WiFi so we could play music, then airplane mode. Sitting by the fire both nights with some music and just our conversations was amazing. We visited the butcher shop in the little town of Capon Bridge and bought the best steaks. Hiked a bit up the creek bed and explored a little. And the hot tub at the house was perfect and romantic. Such a great getaway location.

Beautiful spot in the mountains with a amazing veiw. The cabin was cozy but big enough not to feel cramped. Plenty of space for activities and a nice fire area. Not too far from Shenandoah National Park.

1 night at Watercress Inn at Landon Farm

Loved my little cabin - I was greeted upon arrival by the cutest puppy- the bed in my cabin was the most comfortable bed I’ve ever slept in. It was very quiet except for animal sounds which were relaxing. Everything was cozy and perfect. 10/10
