Our 65 acre farm is secluded and peaceful. We have a small pond with catfish, bluegill, large mouth bass (catch and release only) and a gentle creek. We have chickens, sheep, a pig, cows and diary goats. Enjoy a walk down to the pond and take a picture by the old farm house (from the early 1800's) or explore history in the cemetery. My parents both grew up on the southside of Chicago - where having a tree in your yard meant that you had "made it". They decided to use the land to grow Christmas trees. Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Jefferson National Forest, Thunder BRidge has scenic, large, private tent sites and cabins in the woods for those who want to experience camping at its finest. Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space. Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. Most of the buildings out front are artist studios (currently for 16 artists). We like to share the camp with others and watch it come back to life. All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky. We want to share our property with those who want to stay for more than one night, so we do not accept inquiries of single night stays. This property was once a 300 acre plus tobacco farm. We are located within two miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Appalachian trail via a gated, public, forest road. Hikers should park at their campsite and walk up. The original log cabin was built in the 1850s and now serves as our dining room. The front portion of the house was completed in April of 1861 and the back in the early 1900s. We have plans to eventually turn it into a working farm which produces tinctures, salves and extracts of various native plants. This was my fourth stay at Thunder BRidge in the last three years, and somehow I think I came away loving the place even more this time. This trip was a little different from my previous visits because we turned it into our first big family camping trip. There were 13 of us altogether, spanning three generations, including four senior citizens. We rented three of the cabins for the campers and the Airbnb on the property for the older folks who wanted a few more comforts. Honestly, I can't imagine a place that could have worked better for a group like ours. As always, the campground itself was beautifully maintained. The bathrooms were immaculate, and the pavilion ended up becoming the center of our entire weekend. All 13 of us could comfortably hang out together, play games, cook hot dogs, and put out a full spread of food without ever feeling crowded. Having a space where the entire family could gather made an enormous difference. Adam is also a fantastic host. Over four stays, I've found him to be consistently responsive whenever I've had a question or needed anything. He answers promptly, takes care of the property, and makes the whole experience incredibly easy. The location is almost impossible to beat if you actually want to explore the Natural Bridge area. Devil's Marbleyard is only about five minutes away, Natural Bridge State Park is roughly 10–15 minutes away, Virginia Safari Park is around 15–20 minutes away, and we went tubing with Twin River Outfitters in Buc

Scott was great. He responded quickly and was very helpful, but gave us our space and privacy. The paths through the woods and the little fairy lights were very nice. The grill has a little side burner , so you can do all of your cooking outdoors. How to set up the second bed, or even where to find the second bed, was not blatantly obvious. Be sure to ask for instructions. It is easy and comfy once you figure it out. Using their personal shower in the main house was a little uncomfortable, but that's just my own problem. Again , Scott was very accommodating and gave us space and privacy. The bathroom and sink in the bus are a regular R.V set up with a water tank, so you must use water conservatively. It was so hot, so we never had a campfire, but Scott provided some firewood, and there were nice tiki torches to keep the bugs away. We really enjoyed our stay. It would seem that the negative reviewers failed to remember that this is a Hip Camp and not an Airbnb. It's not even a $30k RV parked at a campground. It is quiet, rustic camping with a real bed and some convenient amenities. This is a great Hipcamp!

Weekend Trip to Thunder BRidge

Woodpecker 1 was absolutely beautiful! It was close to the creek and we even hunted down one of the swimming holes! It’s also a very easy walk to the bath house and the bathrooms were well kept and clean.

3 nights at Thunder BRidge

This was our second time staying at Thunder BRidge. Even though it was the hottest weekend imaginable, we still had a great time. The primitive “cabin” was perfect for our friends who don’t typically go camping. We visited a couple swimming holes near by to cool off. We will be back in the fall!
