The cabin is located on an old apple orchard and budding homestead. It is off-grid and powered by solar. It is a short walk from the parking area (75 steps uphill). My parents both grew up on the southside of Chicago - where having a tree in your yard meant that you had "made it". They decided to use the land to grow Christmas trees. Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Jefferson National Forest, Thunder BRidge has scenic, large, private tent sites and cabins in the woods for those who want to experience camping at its finest. Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space. Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. Most of the buildings out front are artist studios (currently for 16 artists). We like to share the camp with others and watch it come back to life. All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky. We want to share our property with those who want to stay for more than one night, so we do not accept inquiries of single night stays. This property was once a 300 acre plus tobacco farm. We are located within two miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Appalachian trail via a gated, public, forest road. Hikers should park at their campsite and walk up. The original log cabin was built in the 1850s and now serves as our dining room. The front portion of the house was completed in April of 1861 and the back in the early 1900s. We have plans to eventually turn it into a working farm which produces tinctures, salves and extracts of various native plants. Learn more about this land: Heavily wooded mountain side with flowing creek. Easy access (walking distance) to Jefferson National Forest, National Forest horse trail and the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Appalachian Trail. (Note: You cannot drive to the Blue Ridge Parkway as the path is an old forest road which has been gated, but you can walk up to it.)  We also have a tree house which has AC, heat and electrical connection.     You may camp anywhere on the property.  There is plenty of frontage on the creek and several tents can go up there. Woodpecker 1 was amazing for our daughter’s first time camping. The inside was clean of all bugs. Just a short walk to the pavilion and bathroom. The camp itself is very large and has many different things to explore. Adam was always around camp somewhere if we ever needed anything. The creek is a short walk through the woods. Easy parking for two vehicles.

This is the second time my husband and I have stayed at Shirley’s place and we loved it both times! The cabin is very well equipped with anything you need cook and we love the rustic charm of the entire place. The pool was clean and refreshing. The screened porch was perfect for coffee in the mornings and scrabble in the afternoons. The stars were incredibly bright and the sunrises were amazing as always! Our dogs also loved being able to run around and explore :). We can’t recommend this hip camp enough!

Great little space with A/C, running water, flush toilet & electricity. Beds were comfortable with warm blankets & plenty of pillows. The kitchen setup was basic but had everything needed for cooking basic meals, including an outside grill, a two-top propane stove inside and a small fridge. I purchased a dozen eggs and they were excellent! Will look into staying here again if the opportunity comes up.

Thunder bridge is the perfect hidden gem! The moment you enter the canopy of the forest your mood changes. The log cabins and the screened cabins are perfect for those who do not want to pop up a tent No electricity at the sites but be prepared with backup battery charger or head down to the lodge where there is electricity and WiFi! Bring plenty of drinking water I don’t think the water there is potable. We drank what we boiled and are fine! Adam the owner is great! He checks you in and leaves you alone!

Weekend Trip to Thunder BRidge

We had such a fun weekend camping at Thunderbridge. The campsite is beautiful in the spring time. It did rain all weekend but we stayed in the cabin which was a really cool experience. It’s very cozy with a dining table and a living room area with a fire place. The beds are comfortable and the front porch is an awesome place to chill out. We have access to the creek which the kids loved playing in. Their favorite part was riding their bicycles around the campsite . There is a bathhouse with hot showers and a place to clean gear and dishes. Adam is a great host and brought us firewood when we ran out. We will definitely be back ;)

I needed a place to stay on my way to Tennessee from New York and Roni’s place was the perfect location. The sheets and pillowcases on the bed were freshly washed and it was such a bonus to have a small heater and air conditioner as it was hot during the day and got chilly at night. I met Roni on the day I was leaving and she is such a wonderful person. She made sure we knew how to get there before hand, as you don’t have service on your way to the site. It is worth noting that there is no service there, however, you can connect to the Wi-Fi near Ronnie‘s house and take a short walk to get a few bars. There are other dogs and people on the property in close proximity, however it still felt very private when we were in the treehouse and we even had one of the neighbors dogs be our guide when we took a walk would definitely stay again!

The stay was absolutely beautiful . It had everything we needed it was my boyfriends first time camping so he was nervous but staying the night here made him change his mind he loved the out doors it was just something quick & simple just to get away for the night . The bus is next to his house but the host didn’t bother us at all . He was on stand by if we needed him . Which i liked for the privacy . We just wanted the wood burning & smiling in each others faces lol . Google Maps doesn’t help you get to the bus but Apple does takes you straight to the bus only thing is we drove in the night we were to literally follow Scott’s directions to keeping left lol we thought we were going in his grass but we over thought it . Lovely stay we will definitely return back thank you .

Thunder BRidge is such a cool spot. The sites are beautiful and you have tons of privacy. The pavilion by the bath house was a cool place to spend a rainy day. My kids absolutely fell in love with ping pong. Waking up in the screened cabin and feeling the breeze and hearing birds chirping restores the soul!

Weekend Trip to Thunder BRidge

This was my third or fourth stay at Thunder BRidge Campground and it’s been a great experience every single time. We stayed in one of the cabins this trip and loved it—plenty of room both inside and outside the cabin to spread out and relax. The trail along the creek is a great little walk, and the shower and bathroom facilities were clean and well kept. We also had a great time hanging out at the pavilion playing cornhole in the evenings. I do a lot of road trips, so I rarely stay anywhere for more than one night or visit the same place twice. Between Devil’s Marbleyard and Thunder BRidge Campground, this is the one place we make a point to stay for the entire weekend and come back to every single year. Honestly, we wish we had time to visit twice a year. Being less than 10 minutes from Devil’s Marbleyard makes it the perfect base camp for the area. This was actually the first year we bought campground t-shirts because we were so happy with our stay. Honestly, if they had stickers, I’d absolutely have one on my van already. Can’t say enough positive things about this place.
