This spot is a gem and the hosts are gracious with many other amenities. I would highly recommend this spot for 1-3 people or 2 people and a dog looking for a waterfront site for a more relaxed camping experience. "More relaxed" because the tent platform makes tent setup easy, and you don't have to worry about issues with the ground, and John and Mary have firewood and a fire pit ready for use. I'll be coming back soon.

Pretty cool spot. There were a few hammock camping sites, but mostly tent so plan accordingly. The campground folks who run this property were kind and hosted a quiet and peaceful experience.

Mary and John (and Cooper) were friendly and responsive hosts. The campsite sits right by the river in a beautiful location — we really enjoyed our overnight stay and getting to see the fall colors. Would definitely love to visit again!

Mary and John are so unbelievably welcoming. They’ve thought a lot about what campers need from the compost toilet to the outside shower. The view of the river is phenomenal and John offered to let us use kayaks. The platform is such a luxury.

Our stay at Mulehalla was great! Site 10 is even bigger than we expected. It's tucked back away from the other sites so has some privacy. The host was very responsive when we had a couple questions, even though we arrived late. Our dog loved exploring the campground and walking by the C&O.

This is a safe and clean area for tent camping. The property is over 50 acres, so other campers are usually not too close unless you choose to set up near them. During the fall, the river was quite shallow, and there was a sign indicating that fishing isn’t allowed. The nearest grocery store is about 9.5 miles away, so plan ahead for supplies. There are no showers, electricity, or running water on-site, but portable toilets are available. The management is easy to reach by phone and very responsive.

Kevin is an awesome dude to talk to, and a highly flexible host. He took an extra careful look at the details of our reservation and suggested a change of campsite based on our proximity to other guests. Then, when things on site were different than what he had proposed and we set up camp in a different third spot, he showed up the next day and said "that's exactly what I would have suggested, so I'm glad you did it." The site itself is beautiful, and the location is both out of the way and convenient to nearby amenities. We had a great stay. Thanks Kevin!

I surprised my husband and two dogs with a camping, canoeing, and kayaking trip. Our first overnight stop was at the Riverside Retreat. At first, the area seemed very underdeveloped with rough and bumpy roads. I was especially worried that my smaller SUV and new trailer hauling all the gear wouldn't make it since the way was narrow. We found the check-in site at Rappahannock Camp Grounds very easily, and overall had no issues with the roads. It was already getting dark, but thankfully, it was easy to follow the verbal instructions to get to the Hipcamp site. Honestly, if you don't mind feeling a little "lost" then the reward at the end is SO worth it. After going down the dirt road as far as you can, there's open areas next to some fields and a shallow river with perfectly crystal clear water and river rocks all along the bottom. There are two access points to the river. One immediately when you pull up to the fields and one further hidden all the way to the left side of the area under the trees. I loved that you could choose to either camp under the open stars or in a forested patch. We ended up next to the field where the ground was flat and setup. There were metal fire rings provided if you wanted to have a campfire, and a porta potty on either end of the camping space. The dogs had such a great time playing in the shallow water and I loved getting to hear the sound of the river flowing over the rocks. Even with other families there, it still felt private. We'll be back!

I wanted somewhere secluded to unplug and this place delivered! I selected a spot in the woods and it was heaven; the property was well maintained with mowing and clearing, and the amount of noise was minimal despite other campers being on site. There were also multiple porter John’s available for use and a dumpster at the entrance for convenience. Easy river access, walkable paths, and all the nighttime sounds. It’s a must visit.

Mulehalla was a really nice campground. The hosts welcomed me upon arrival and gave me the orientation. We camped at site #6 which had a tent pad, stone fire ring and additional space for another tent. It was a little difficult finding the site since there isn't a clear drive lane, but I liked that. Some of the sites are really close to each other and we had another group across from our site. But we had the entire camp ground to ourselves the second night. Port-a-john was really clean. Bring your own potable water.

This campsite was perfect for us! Tucked away behind a quiet neighborhood, the campground was easy to find, spacious and beautiful and we found the host to be very responsive. Our site (#11) was tucked away in a lane of grass between two tree lines in a space that looks to be used or have been used for disc golf. This late in the season we only had one group somewhat near us and we didn’t hear them despite the relative proximity. We were a quick walk away from the restroom which was very convenient and woke to the pleasant sounds of birds rustling and calling in the trees above us. We were able to locate and purchase wood for a campfire with ease and enjoyed a nice fire on our second evening. The campground is located near an excellent coffee shop (River Bottom Roasters) and there are many great hikes, shops and restaurants within driving distance.

The view is beautiful. My pictures are amazing. Very quiet and peaceful. Close to the rivers edge. It did not rain, so I had no issues. However, flooding would be the only concern or negative. This is my favorite or number 1 campsite. This was my 5th camping trip. I would book again.

We absolutely loved our stay here!! The site is private and so beautiful. I wish we had more than one night here - we would love to return. Mary & John were so incredibly welcoming & hospitable!! The platform site is perfect & we loved having the composting toilet right there. Waking up by the water was so peaceful. I highly recommend!

If you’re looking for a primitive camping site away from everyone and everything, this is the place to go! We ended up choosing an edge of the woods/field spot, plenty of wood for a fire, very quiet, with easygoing hosts. Would definitely stay again!

Loved the primitive campsite on the river. Easy check-in at the campground, and Erik and crew are very helpful for directions to the sites, instructions, and even jump your car if it comes to that (again, huge thank you!).
Lots of room to setup camp. Level ground with good overhead for tents (we had a big one in the treeline and it fit well), enough space to keep away from the fire ring too. Had easy access to the water and lots of solitude. We had mostly shallow waters making it easy for my kids and I trek up and downstream to explore. Definitely planning for our next visit.
