Weekend Trip to Water Canyon Campground and Resort

We loved our time at Water Canyon! Thanks to our awesome host, Charles, we were shown a short cut to Zion that had gorgeous views and cut the drive down to 40 minutes or so. But we honestly enjoyed the local landscape and hikes just as much! Water Canyon was incredible and not crowded, even on a beautiful Saturday + less than a mile down the road. Charles was SO responsive via text, really helpful with reservations, and a comforting presence any time he stopped through camp. The place is a work-in-progress, but still so homey and nice, with well-defined pathways, solar lights, and magically secluded sites imbedded in the natural trees and cacti. I’d recommend sites 1 to 6 for now - sites 7+ are newer and located on the hillside in sand, with more exposure to the wind and no table/bench/grill. We had a HUGE (12’x12’) tent and it was able to fit in our site with a little rearranging. If you have a big footprint, I’d recommend asking for dimensions to ensure it fits! Thank you!!!!

*Just to clarify, this review probably says site 7 but we ended up staying in site 6. Sites 7-11 are not quite lanscaped at the time of my stay but all have a fire pits and tent space. * I absolutely loved this campground! It's not too far from Zion NP and there are tons of hidden gems in the area. Our camphost, Charles, was extremely responsive with any questions we had and gave us lots of advice on what to see in the area. This campground itself is so adorable and thoughtfully put together. It is still a work in progress (showers coming soon!) But, there are lit landscaped paths to all of the campsites and the toilet. There are lots of little cacti so the path and lights help you avoid a run-in with one of them! Most of the sites have wood buring grills, fire extinguishers, and picnic tables and all of them have fire pits. These sites are cozy and secluded with lots of shade a trees. Any spot that may expose you to other campsites had man-made partitions to give you more privacy. Charles has also provided firewood for purchase on site. There are multiple spigots of very clean water available right up the road at Maxwell park. This spot really had everything we needed and I can't wait to go back!

What a beautiful place! We had a lovely time. The view is impossible to beat, nature, space and cows all around. Location is great too. We drive a Subaru outback and were pulling a teardrop. Frankly, we were a little stressed out about what we read on the dirt road leading up to camp. It was dry and bumpy but nothing else. On the last morning, a storm was moving in so we quickly packed up to avoid getting stuck. Would definitely stay again.

There's nothing more spectacular than camping up at about 5800 feet looking east into the Kolob canyon part of Zion national Park! up on top of this Mesa you got an incredible view of north and south guardian angels and Tabernacle wall I believe, incredible views all around! We loved waking up to hearing the cows Bells gently tinkling as they walk around the ranch, a pretty mellow group that really made us feel much more part of this beautiful land. The Zion Wright family ranch is by far my most favorite place to camp, looking forward to coming back!

If we lived closer, we'd camp here all the time. This place was amazing! So many cool sites to choose from, views were incredible, super quiet, lovely cow bells tinkling... Porta potty situation was gross, but not unusable. The drivers in our group had no trouble navigating the hill into the ranch (4wd and 2wd vehicles).

Loved it!! Such a beautiful space, super quiet, woke up to the birds chirping and cows mooing! No rain when I went, so drive in was easy, but can attest it’s the driver not the car that could be an issue. Plus felt extremely safe as a solo female car camper. Such beautiful views and loved feeling so isolated! Lots of room to spread out and find your perfect spot. Porta potties are always a bonus! One thing worth mentioning - we LOVEDDDDD seeing all the cows throughout our stay, but it might not be an experience for everyone! Many of them had cowbells so we would hear them jungle and mooing in the morning and nighttime. We found it very cute and comforting, but just a heads up for others! Would love to come back :)

We loved camping at Bill's ranch. The campsites are many and spread out so you can accommodate whatever level of privacy you are looking for. There are portapotties at many spots and ours was very clean. We liked having the cattle roaming around with their cowbells but appreciate this is not for everyone. The highlight for us was the absolutely amazing views from the ranch. We stayed here for one night and liked it so much that we stayed for another.

This was the place I wanted for my road trip. Off the beaten path with beautiful views of Zion. As private as you want to be with copious amount of space to set up camp. Bring your water, there is none. Fuel your vehicle up prior to, even though you're looking at the park, you're nowhere near societal amenities. This camp is a grazing pasture for the cows, stay out of their way & you will be just fine. The darkness allows the stars to shine bright! Arrive with daylight, otherwise it will be an added challenge to know where you are on the property in relation to cliffs, views, and other campers. Highly recommended for quiet privacy.

Overview

Surrounded by red rock cliffs and canyons, St. George is a major outdoor hub in southwest Utah. Here the Mojave Desert converges with the Colorado Plateau and Great Basin, forming an incredibly diverse desert landscape prime for camping adventures. You can hike, mountain bike, rock climb, and go canyoneering in multiple parks near St. George. Campers will also find opportunities to view fossilized dinosaur tracks, check out pink sand dunes, and explore OHV (off-highway vehicle) areas. Although St. George is sometimes overlooked by campers driving from Las Vegas to Zion National Park (one hour away), it stands on its own as a worthy addition to any southwest desert adventure itinerary.

St. George Surrounds

St. George borders Pioneer Park, a 52-acre red rock playground with excellent rock climbing, hiking, and slot canyons. North of Pioneer Park lies the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve, a 69,000-acre park with mountain biking and hiking trails. Keep an eye peeled for Mojave Desert tortoise, gila monsters, and chuckwalla. Dino lovers will also want to hit the BLM’s Red Cliffs Campground.

Snow Canyon State Park

Just 15 minutes north of St. George, Snow Canyon State Park has tons of desert features to explore, including red and white sandstone canyons, lava tubes, lava flows, sand dunes, and an extinct volcano. The scenic campground features tent sites and RV sites with picnic tables, grills, and restrooms.

Sand Hollow State Park

At Sand Hollow State Park you can swim or paddle in a deep blue reservoir ringed by red rock and dunes. Kayak, SUP, and ATV rentals are available on-site.

Zion National Park

Zion National Park’s south entrance in Springdale is just one hour from St. George, making this iconic national park a feasible day trip away from a St. George basecamp. The park’s Kolob Canyons are closest to town offering sandstone cliffs and panoramic views perfect for a photo opp.

Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park

About a 75-minute drive east of St. George, Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park is an otherworldly site where you can frolic on pink sand dunes made of Navajo sandstone. Sand sledding and ATV adventures are popular here.

When to go

Spring and fall are the most temperate seasons for camping in St. George, while summers run extremely hot (average July and August highs are in the triple digits. Summer visitors must be extremely careful about outdoor activity, hydration, and sun/heat exposure. Winters are pleasant in St. George, but nighttime temperatures do reach freezing and snow is possible.
