Another outstanding stay!! Maru the camp host made sure to come by and check on us often. 😊 Jennifer and Ashley at the store were awesome. We met a few of the locals and hope to be a part of it all in years to come.

The posting for this campsite by this host does not even begin to describe how beautiful and off grid this place was. Met briefly with the host and truly enjoyed the stay. If you are looking for a beginner's off-road experience and a place to unplug from the world this place is perfect. I highly recommend it. There were places to hike and the stargazing made this trip worth it.

This camp is on the edge of the Christmas Mtns. The peace and quiet was just what we needed to let go of the stresses of life. Having the shelter for shade provided just the right place to setup a hammock and take a much needed afternoon nap. If only I could duplicate the serenity of this site at home. Then life would be perfect. Brad was an excellent host and we are already planning our next trip.

Cute little store on the way to Big Bend! They have RV hookups right next door! Ashley was very sweet and helpful! But I'd have to say our favorite part was the camp host, Maru! She is the sweetest orange and white cat! She checked on us every morning and night and made sure we were nice and comfortable!

The best experience I ever had! Jim is very welcoming and friendly. The cabin he built is stuffed with love and intention. Everything is so thoughtful and well made. If you go there, you have to watch the night sky! It is beyond comprehension. Suited for 2, perfect for 4, maybe a little narrow for 6. Bring enough water and supplies. Thoughtful use of resources like water and electricity is mandatory.

Jeff was super nice, we talked for about an hour on how he became a rancher and our travels. The spot is down a pretty roughshod country road, but the area is beautiful. The showers worked well. Be wary, it can get windy out there!

We love the mountains the shrouded the camp site. It was peaceful. We call it our place to disconnect from stress. We visited there two years ago fo our honeymoon. We are planning to go back an visit soon. We wished we would have booked more days.

We were grateful for the electric hookup in Elena's place after a few days in Big Bend! We did not get to meet Elena but her mom was very nice and helped us get situated. Simple setup and walking distance to restaurant. What else can you want!

Very nice site with clean, flushing porta-pots close by, a table,,and a canopy above the tent site with a wind break. The shower setup was outdoors but had hot water and soap dispensers mounted on the wall so very convenient. The property was clean and not far from stores, restaurants, and gas.

They were so friendly (and kid friendly) and we had so much room. Though, we didn't consider the wind when planning our campout and really struggled with the dust.

A great, secluded shelter that's not only got shade, but it's great at blocking the wind! Although it's a little over a mile off the pavement, I had zero issues getting my fully loaded Goldwing motorcycle there and back numerous times. The host was super communicative and responsive to questions, really put my mind at ease for a first HipCamp experience. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Nesting Star Camp

Nestled within the rugged and mesmerizing landscape of Terlingua, our off-grid desert camp offers an unparalleled escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. This camp is a sanctuary for those seeking solitude and a connection with the raw beauty of the desert. Nesting Star Camp is situated within the legendary Terlingua Ranch and is strategically located to provide easy access to the stunning offerings of Big Bend National Park, Big Bend Ranch State Park and the surrounding backcountry. The West entrance to Big Bend National Park is 23 miles from the camp. Big Bend Ranch State Park's East entrance is 38 miles from camp. The camp sits on 5 acres and is located 0.7 miles from Terlingua Ranch Road, which is a paved asphalt road leading to Hwy 118. The final 0.7 miles to the property consist of dirt and gravel roads maintained by the Property Owners Association of Terlingua Ranch (POATRI). These dirt and gravel roads leading to the camp are generally easily traversed, though they can become silty or muddy if it rains. In some areas, heavy rain may cause road flooding. We recommend driving an SUV or a truck, as low-profile cars may struggle depending on the road conditions that day. Please be aware that the roads within Terlingua Ranch, while publicly accessible, are located on private land. We kindly request that you not drive off of any roads, as the surrounding areas are all privately owned. While navigating the deeper parts of Terlingua Ranch can be challenging, reaching the camp is usually straightforward. We've driven in with a 3500 dually with a 20’ gooseneck horse trailer, and we’ve never encountered any issues. It’s easily accessible yet remote enough to showcase its pristine natural beauty. The surroundings are incredibly tranquil and serene. At night, under Nesting Star Camp's skies, the stars unveil a majestic tapestry that will leave you in awe. The night also awakens with the coyote calls, the gentle desert winds, and the possible flutter of a bat or owl hoot. We also have wild donkeys that roam the area, and you might hear them braying. Please avoid approaching them, though. We provide a composting toilet for your use. Please note that when we are not present to manage waste (#2), you will be responsible for removing the toilet liner bag and disposing of your waste in the provided trash cans. There is also a shower room, and we will supply solar shower bags for your use. If you’re not familiar with them, please research solar showers before booking. Essentially, they are bags you will be responsible for filling with water and placing in the sun to heat up. On a sunny day, you can achieve a temperature of around 115 degrees, although on cloudy days, it won’t heat beyond the ambient temperature. The camp features two uncovered decks for stargazing and one deck with a roof that is partially open on the sides, providing more shelter from the elements. Please be aware that this is an off-grid camp, meaning there is no running water or power on-site. You are required to bring your own water. Additionally, we request that you limit generator use to basic needs only and keep it off between 7 PM and 8 AM. Cell phone coverage on the property can be inconsistent, but on most days, you can expect to get 2-3 bars of 3G signal on Verizon and Google Fi. We personally use a cell phone booster and recommend one if you don't have one, on most days it can provide a 4-bar 3G service. Sometimes, you may need to find an elevated spot to obtain a strong signal. However, it’s important to note that reception can be unreliable, and we recommend you plan ahead. Starlink works very well here.

Stay Awhile Ranch

Unplug at this camping destination, perfectly situated near Terlingua and Big Bend. This site has plenty of space for tent camping, whether camping solo or with a group. Land includes not only amazing 360 views, but also a shade structure with solar lighting, picnic table, composting outhouse, hammock posts to hang your own hammocks, fire pit and grill. BYO-tent & beer! Views of Nine Point Mesa, Black Mountain and more and just minutes away from Little Country Burro Store. Check us out on IG @stayawhileranch While the property does have a shade structure and outhouse, this is still considered primitive and off-grid camping. There is no electricity or water and little to none cell signal. It's the perfect place to unplug and relax while being surrounded by mountainous views with Nine Points Mesa, Black Mountain and more. You will need to bring your own tent, food and water, hammock and other camping essentials. The shade structure will provide relief from the sun and shelter from rain. It has solar powered lights that will turn on automatically at night and provides the perfect amount of light for sitting at the picnic table for a game of dominoes or cards while enjoying a cold drink at night. The hook and string game is also set up on one of the posts to enjoy. You can put up two hammocks at the hammock station - a perfect place to relax and take in the mountainous views and enjoy the dark night sky. On clear nights you can see the Milky Way! Hammocks are not provided. There is a composting outhouse that is covered. There is intentionally no door so you can take in the views of Black Mountain. Do bring toilet paper. Two chairs are provided for use around the fire pit. You are welcome to source any kindling from the property. Please burn responsibly as winds can pick up and do not leave the property without completely extinguishing any fire. Do not burn if Brewster County is under a burn ban. There is also a grate for grilling over the campfire as well as a charcoal grill you may use. Bring your own charcoal. There is also a bin that has misc supplies such as games (dominoes and cards), cooking utensils, extra batteries, first aid kit, and more that are available to use. Please wash any cooking supplies if using and pack everything back in before you leave. If you need to connect to the outside world, the Little Country Burro Store is about a 10 minute drive and has wifi. It's a great place to grab more ice and other goods too. There is also the Cottonwood General Store about 30 mins away that has a larger food selection and other items. I also recommend stopping at the Porters grocery store in Alping on your way in - they have a great beer selection. There is access to a full service bathroom with showers ($2 per person), a pool to cool down in ($8.50 per person), washer/dryer (coin operated) and a restaurant at the Terlingua Ranch Lodge. The American Legion Post across the highway is a great place to have a cold drink and chat with locals. You will have access to all 10 acres of the property. There is room for multiple tents if traveling with a group. The roads leading up to the property are dirt roads. To get to the property, an AWD or high clearance vehicle is not required although it is recommended if you plan on doing further exploring on the surrounding dirt roads. Monsoon season is during the summer - please be aware of the weather around your trip. In my experience, I've still been able to get to and from the property after a rain but it can make for harsh driving conditions. It is always a good idea to come with a tire plug kit and small portable air compressor. The property is secluded. It is part of Terlingua Ranch but there's a good chance you won't come across anyone on the roads while getting to and from, but always please be respectful to our neighbors. It can get windy - make sure you stake your tent and be aware of what you're leaving out overnight or when you leave the property. Dogs are allowed, but be aware of the harsh environment and do not leave your dog unattended. You can often hear coyotes at night and it is mountain lion country. We often bring our black lab Mack and he has a great time, just make sure you're bringing plenty of water for your pups and check paws for cactus needles. Do keep in mind that if you plan on visiting Big Bend National Park that dogs are not allowed on the trails. Please pick up after your dog, waste can be placed with the outhouse waste. We practice pack it in and pack it out and expect you to do the same. Take any and all trash back out with you and leave the property ready for its next guest. If the American Legion Post is open, you may be able to tip them extra and dump your trash there. You are also expected to dispose of your outhouse waste. More info about that will be provided as it gets closer to your stay and trust me, it's not as gross as it seems!

Our terrain is the Chihuhuan desert which has cactus covered rocky mountains with all the desert plants. Although we are remote we have a very nice swimming pool and restaurant only about ten to fifteen minutes away. We have two cabins we rent out. The big cabin has four rooms and sleeps six. The other cabin is called the small cabin it is one room and sleeps two.

NoWhere Desert Paradise

Undeveloped desert property 7 miles from Hwy 118 and about 30 miles to Terlingua/Study Butte. 9 miles to Little Burro Country Store. Beautiful 360 degree views of hills and mountains. These pictures absolutely don't do it justice. Come for the stars and stay for the quiet. We've seen donkey tracks and have so much fun being the only people in sight. Extremely secluded and perfect for stargazing! We are located in Terlingua Ranch, so roads are maintained but high clearance vehicles would be preferable. Full disclosure, there are several low water crossings that must be crossed to get to the property. Don't let that discourage you, it is a desert after all! Just know that if it rains there is a potential for the road to wash out. Summer is the rainy season and if for some reason the road is out and you cannot get to the property I will absolutely refund you. We have had to park and walk in before but we know you might not want to do that! It's easiest to use the center GPS coordinate to navigate there, and we do own the tall hill on the west side of the road although the majority of the property is on the east side, you can park or put your tent anywhere you like, though I would stay closer to the road to avoid the draw at the back of the property.

Paisano Azul Ranch is on 30 acres located by Terlingua Creek. The property is just minutes from the Terlingua Ghost Town and a short 3 mile drive to the Big Bend National park. Come pitch your tent or park your camper amid the peaceful desert hillside with views of plateaus that lead to the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park. There is a fire pit on site for you to toast marshmallows or cozy up near, and you can enjoy a bite to eat at the picnic table provided at each site. The picnic tables are placed beneath shade sails. There are two nice and new desert tan flushing Porta-Potties on-site, as well as showers for guests to use. These come in handy after a long day hiking. We hope you'll enjoy the beautiful open sky sunsets, sunrises, and stargazing as much as we do. We are located just 3 miles from the entrance to Big Bend National Park. There are plenty of opportunities to get out and explore - you can hike, bike, canoe camp; kayak, off-road, swim, go horseback riding, visit hot springs, as well as visit restaurants, galleries, and listen to great music in Terlingua. There is something for everyone to feel free to bring the whole family. DIRECTIONS: Once you are on Road Runner Circle, go past the house on the left with the Christmas lights on. Please continue down the road and follow the road around the curve to the left. The campsites will be on the left and side behind the rock walls. The campsite number that is booked is the campsite you will stay in. Additional details to note: - We now have an above ground pool to keep cool in during the summer! Covered with a shade sail the water stays nice and chilly. ($10 fee/person) - You can stay connected if you'd like to, as cell reception and wifi are both available by the showers. Feel free to unplug during your stay though. - Seeing other campers on your trip at the campsite is very standard, as the sites are far enough apart to feel like they are yours, but they are not private. - Non potable water is provided on-site. We have an artisan well on property that has been certified as drinkable. The showers and non potable water is located approximately 1/4 mile from campsites 1-7. The arts, history, and entertainment of Terlingua Ghost Town are less than 2 miles away. Like most ruins in the Ghost Town, my stone house was built in the early 1900s to house a miner’s family from the nearby Rainbow Mine. I bought the property in 1986 and began restoring and rebuilding. In 2019 I retired here from NYC and began exploring possibilities for sustainable tourism. West Texas is one of the best places in the United States to view the Milky Way (both Big Bend parks are certified as International Dark Sky parks). We use shielded LED lighting around buildings and pathways to cut down on light pollution and optimize stargazing opportunities for our astrotourists. And we are applying for dark sky certification from the Texan By Nature program. Bear in mind that this is the desert, in all its rugged glory. There are critters, rocks, plants with thorns, slippery slopes, sink holes, rusted artifacts and broken glass from decades long past. Bring sturdy shoes and a flashlight, and stay on the paths! We may eventually add a few more sites and expand our amenities, but our intention is always to provide remote, low-density accommodation for folks who are respectful of the land.

In the center is an area of approximately 6 acres flat, with rising limestone ridge lines to the east and west, open skyline to south with a view of Bofecillos Mountains, an area characterized by volcanic deposits of lava and ash-flow tuff and sedimentary deposits of conglomerates and sandstones. The four mountain tops; Packsaddle, Hen Egg, Panther and Agua Fria Mountains provide an amazing view during the day and at night, breathtaking night time views of the Milky Way and the multitudes of stars to gaze upon unlike any other place in North America. The morning sunrise over the eastern mesa brings its own spectacular views. Surrounding the 40 acres are many things of archaeological wonder. A Rock Hounds dream of minerals, stones and fossilized prehistoric microorganisms, as well as, the potential of finding the fossils of large prehistoric aquatic mammals. Yes, you are free to take a small sample of the thousands of quartz and calcite stones found in huge abundance. As you come to then end of Mailbox Rd., you'll see a residence to your left.
