In November, we had over 10 inches of rain. It was a blessing for our grass and cover crops, however, the spill way at our campground was severely damaged. Therefore, the pictures of our beautiful pond do not portray the actual visual of what you will see. We are in the process of working with engineers to repair the spillway. You will still enjoy the beautiful sunsets, serene environment and we have three other ponds suitable for fishing.
We offer two full camper hookups and several tent camping options. We have a permanent toilet and sink on-site. We are a full time working farm. We have beef cattle, sheep, horses, goats and chickens. For an additional cost, we offer farm tours and we are willing to cook for our guests. There are several wineries and breweries nearby. This is the perfect spot if you need to escape the chaos of life and enjoy some peace and quiet.

In the early 1900’s an iconic red barn was built near the hilltop along the road between the old Mt. Zion community and Collinsville. Later in the 1900’s, the land was mostly abandoned by its owners, but not by the local fishermen! They knew its woodland fishing pond never dried up, and so was able to support a better population of fish. They also dumped a cornucopia of old motorcycles, cars and farm equipment in the front field. What else were you supposed to do with scrap metal in North Texas horse country?
In 2002 the Holtzman family purchased the 35 acre tract of land. They dug a front pond for swimming and paddling, buried the scrap metal (although occasional bits of history still work their way up!), restored and brought horses back to the barn, and began consulting with local biologists about supporting native wildlife.
April Holtzman launched Camp Tonkawa Outdoor Learning Center on the property to provide a beautiful, safe place for families to explore and learn about nature. Camp Tonkawa continues to host overnight and day camps with educational programing organized around various themes including: Native American culture, nature awareness, basic camping skills, primitive survival, organic gardening, herbology, outdoor cooking, western days, and horsemanship. We also host field trips and frequently conduct Girl Scout journeys for all levels in the "It's Your Planet, Love it!" series.
Due to Covid-19, which limited working with groups for our educational programing, we joined Hip Camp where families who could isolate in nature together on our property.

There several spots and we were lucky to have no neighbors. Lovely spot next to water. Good shade from the sun from big oak trees. Host left us some fire wood. Lots wildlife. Deer, beaver, geese and water snakes. Wouldn’t recommend going swimming. I had no luck fishing but another camper caught 2 bass. Nice primitive spot for a quick getaway from dfw area. Thank you.

What an awesome campsite. My friends and I camped at the dispersed campsite. We loved the remote feeling of the camp even though it is close to the winery. We were in town for a kayak bass fishing tournament and there was plenty of room to park our three vehicles with trailers. Very quiet with low light pollution, so the stars were bright. I highly recommend this site and will definitely return.

Didn’t make use of facilities but campground was clean and well kept. Small pool looked refreshing.

We liked the privacy, and solitude feeling. You can still hear the highway, train and a dog kennel with lots of dogs. We were greeted by a white donkey (we named him Hilberto) and spotted a wild pig at dusk. The creek was my favorite part! Such a peaceful spot and the dogs had fun playing in the water. We downloaded a bird app and found lots of different ones by their songs and calls. Glad to have amenities nearby like food and coffee so we could come back to nature. No teepee or horses spotted though. If you have dogs that don’t run far, it’s great to have your dogs run free and be off leash here, just make sure to give them (and you) a good wash after because there’s lots of poison plants around the trees.

This is a convenient place to camp if visiting St Jo, Nocona, or Muenster. I stayed in site #10, which was close to the camp shower. This and other sites are very spacious. It was very quiet at night, and the ranch is well maintained. Did not visit the tasting room up the hill, but would like to come back in the fall. The showers and camp toilet are rustic, but it is camping and they were clean.
