Maclellan Island is a unique 24-acre wildlife sanctuary situated in the middle of the Tennessee River, in the heart of downtown Chattanooga. It is accessible by water only. The island is home to a great diversity of plants, animals, and birds.
Campers can enjoy easy wildlife viewing in a true urban wilderness setting. Muskrats, geese, and kingfishers can be seen feeding at the water’s edge, while the forest is home to songbirds, turkeys, raccoons, owls, possums, foxes, and woodpeckers. It's a great place to quietly watch nesting osprey and great-blue heron as well as an important feeding area for migrating warblers.
IMPORTANT: Maclellan Island is accessible by boat ONLY. You will need to provide your own transportation to and from the island, either using your own boat or by renting a kayak/SUP from a local outfitter. We recommend renting kayaks from L2 Outdoors who launches from Coolidge Park.
Maclellan Island’s earliest inhabitants were Indigenous People whose island community was likely an extension or suburb of Citico, a nearby village. Farmed in the 1800’s and early 1900’s, the island was plowed for many years and largely free of the trees which shade it today. Floods have covered the island from time to time and drove away numerous early settlers including one early farmer, Abel Kesterson, who survived rising waters in 1867 only by holding onto the horns of his cow as they swam to safety. The island eventually passed through the hands of several prominent companies as well as a number of more rambunctious inhabitants. Finally in 1954 Maclellan Island was donated to the Chattanooga Audubon Society by Robert J. Maclellan for preservation as a wildlife refuge.
If you'll be arriving by a motorized boat, you will need to use a public boat ramp. The closest one is at the Tennessee River Park. Coolidge Park has a kayak/canoe/SUP launch and you can park cars in their parking lot overnight for a fee.

Off the grid, out of the way, rustic 10 acres where you can pitch a tent, take a hike and enjoy a campfire. Mostly wooded with nearby sites to explore, a few swings for fun (swings have recently been removed due to trees falling) and a fantastically cold SEASONAL mountain creek for cooling off.
Always improving our place, we recently removed the 'cabins', which had become unsuitable for use.
The property is part of a community, which you may notice on the way to the campsite. Site 1 (The Swings) will be first left after you turn into the driveway. It is a U shaped drive, at the bottom of the U, park and walk 15 feet to site. Site 2 (Main Container) is at the end of main driveway, next to container. Drive to end of driveway, park and walk 10 feet to camp. Both are equidistant to the outhouse. There is a trail (tagged with red) that goes all the way around the property, a top half and a bottom half that will take you by the creek. Please look through all of the listing information.
The SEASONAL creek at the bottom of the slope is wonderful and there is a spot for two adults to sit down into the crisp water and plenty of room for lots of feet. If you follow the path in the middle of the property, a 30 minute walk (therefore not on our property) will take you to a beautiful swimming hole. It's cold! There is no power or running water at the property so it's an ideal place to get away from daily life and truly relax. We hope you will enjoy it as much as our family does!
Please note that even though some pictures show buildings, there are no longer cabins/shelter on The Land. We are unable to remove pictures Hipcampers post. It is raw 10 acres so, yes there are ticks. Cover up and spray as you see fit, just be aware. Also, since it is 10 acres of trees, there is plenty of firewood. We don't leave any bundles, just find down limbs and presto, firewood. DO NOT USE THE MAP LISTED OR GOOGLE MAPS; it will take you straight through water. We send detailed directions to you once the day before your booking. Please plan to travel in with daylight, it is incredibly difficult to navigate to our space in the dark. Camp Chet was founded with the purpose to help people encounter God through outdoor experiences. It over 900 acres of private forested land on Whitwell Mountain, which is part of the Cumberland Plateau in Southeast Tennessee.

I recently acquired this property that has been in my family for over 100 years and my original home place until around 1980. My wife and I initially made this site for our own RV use, but we want to share it for others to enjoy and also to help finance our constant improvements. The original house that I grew up in is still located on the property but is currently uninhabitable (for now). My fondest memories of the property are of playing and catching crawdads in the creek that located on the property when I was a kid and riding horses and flying kites in the fields. I am working hard to restore this property to the way I remember it and trying to make it enjoyable for those that come to visit. A majority of the property is still being used as a hay field during the summer months and two to three times a year the hay is usually harvested.

Secluded in the woods on the Cumberland Plateau in middle Tennessee, Long Fork derives its name from the 800 feet of frontage on the Long Fork Creek. For casual campers we have the Wooded Campsite which is easy to access, and for more experienced campers wanting a little more of a hike we recommend the Secluded Grove campsite. The land from bottom to top of the mountain is designed as a 5 part pilgrimage, and how high up the mountain you can get can be used to evaluate your spiritual and physical fitness. WLCC minister Aron. the campsite host is typically available for Guided pilgrimage hikes and if the weather cooperates, and if your party is tough enough, and doesn't mind a little scrambling and getting dirty, you can also see the mandala cliff cave which only maybe 1 in 5 groups make it to is true test of skill to get there to complete the final step of the pilgrimage. Most campers choose to self explore and there are many beautiful sights to see with trail going up the mountain, or you can just chill with the view of your campsite if you prefer. As you ascend Sand Mountain, the vegetation thins revealing spectacular views of Lookout Mountain especially in the fall & winter months after the leaves have fallen. At the very top of the property are 30+ ft high cliffs. There is a cliff cave that has a colorful collection of lichen growing in it and we have named it our 'Mandala cave', but access is subject to weather and requires Guide to access. If you enjoy bush craft, there is plenty of material for you to build a lean-to, tipi, or structure of choice. Trees range from poplar to multiple species of oak. Natural wildlife include deer, wild turkeys, scorpions, and ticks. Pets are welcome, and be advised we have a male cat who will likely hide if you bring dogs but won't bother you. If you need assistance minister Aron, campsite host lives on site in the custom earthbag parsonage, and is also available for earthbag building workshops and guided hikes for nominal donation of $5. All funds from hipcamp donations go to Whole Life Center Church s.s.m, the Freedom religion (wholelife.cc) for improving religious pilgrimage experience. Our church creed is Freedom is Universal. Through camping and nature you can experience God.

We raise Scottish Highland cattle, goats, sheep, and alpacas on 90 acres of reclaimed coal mine land. We are using the animals and permaculture techniques to repair this land to a vibrant, productive place. Camp Chet was founded with the purpose to help people encounter God through outdoor experiences. It over 900 acres of private forested land on Whitwell Mountain, which is part of the Cumberland Plateau in Southeast Tennessee.
Take a hike on miles of trails comprised of forest paths, old wagon roads, or coal mining roads.
If you find a chunk of coal on the ground feel free to take it home with you as a souvenir.
If you are a history buff, you may be interested in discovering previous caretakers from the late 1800's and early 1900's in nearby cemeteries.
The camp ground is on top of a mountain, and you will have to go through a locked gate and drive over a mile and half on a bumpy gravel/dirt road. You will be most comfortable in a vehicle that is suitable for rugged terrain.
Day trips less than an hour away include the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga, Rock City, Ruby Falls, Nickajack Lake and Bat Cave among many others.

I recently acquired this property that has been in my family for over 100 years and my original home place until around 1980. My wife and I initially made this site for our own RV use, but we want to share it for others to enjoy and also to help finance our constant improvements. The original house that I grew up in is still located on the property but is currently uninhabitable (for now). My fondest memories of the property are of playing and catching crawdads in the creek that located on the property when I was a kid and riding horses and flying kites in the fields. I am working hard to restore this property to the way I remember it and trying to make it enjoyable for those that come to visit. A majority of the property is still being used as a hay field during the summer months and two to three times a year the hay is usually harvested.

Secluded in the woods on the Cumberland Plateau in middle Tennessee, Long Fork derives its name from the 800 feet of frontage on the Long Fork Creek. For casual campers we have the Wooded Campsite which is easy to access, and for more experienced campers wanting a little more of a hike we recommend the Secluded Grove campsite. The land from bottom to top of the mountain is designed as a 5 part pilgrimage, and how high up the mountain you can get can be used to evaluate your spiritual and physical fitness. WLCC minister Aron. the campsite host is typically available for Guided pilgrimage hikes and if the weather cooperates, and if your party is tough enough, and doesn't mind a little scrambling and getting dirty, you can also see the mandala cliff cave which only maybe 1 in 5 groups make it to is true test of skill to get there to complete the final step of the pilgrimage. Most campers choose to self explore and there are many beautiful sights to see with trail going up the mountain, or you can just chill with the view of your campsite if you prefer. As you ascend Sand Mountain, the vegetation thins revealing spectacular views of Lookout Mountain especially in the fall & winter months after the leaves have fallen. At the very top of the property are 30+ ft high cliffs. There is a cliff cave that has a colorful collection of lichen growing in it and we have named it our 'Mandala cave', but access is subject to weather and requires Guide to access. If you enjoy bush craft, there is plenty of material for you to build a lean-to, tipi, or structure of choice. Trees range from poplar to multiple species of oak. Natural wildlife include deer, wild turkeys, scorpions, and ticks. Pets are welcome, and be advised we have a male cat who will likely hide if you bring dogs but won't bother you. If you need assistance minister Aron, campsite host lives on site in the custom earthbag parsonage, and is also available for earthbag building workshops and guided hikes for nominal donation of $5. All funds from hipcamp donations go to Whole Life Center Church s.s.m, the Freedom religion (wholelife.cc) for improving religious pilgrimage experience. Our church creed is Freedom is Universal. Through camping and nature you can experience God.

We raise Scottish Highland cattle, goats, sheep, and alpacas on 90 acres of reclaimed coal mine land. We are using the animals and permaculture techniques to repair this land to a vibrant, productive place. It was a little snug trying to get in, probably better for a smaller set up, however it was a great spot. The host was great willing to help with anything.

Loved camping at South Suck Creek Camp with my sons. We stayed in our 24' RV and had no problem getting in and out safely. The views were incredible, and the campsite was super quiet and private. Lots of space to explore and enjoy nature. It’s also a quick drive to several great hiking trails. Highly recommend it to anyone looking to escape for a few peaceful nights.

The Falls at Sewanee Creek is definitely worth the booking! Grant met my wife and I as soon as we got there and gave us a wonderful tour of the property. Grant is a very kind person who takes a lot of pride in this place and wants each camper to have a great experience. The water fall is so beautiful and might be the best part of staying here! You’re able to hike down to see more waterfalls down the gorge, which could be difficult for some due to there not being a marked trail, but it is definitely worth it!

We had been looking for a place where it's just us.
It is by the road but wasn't noisy enough for us to not return. It also has well water and the sulfur smell is strong. We had bottled water and opened the bathroom fan when showering and sulfur problem solved.
The pros outweigh the road noise (which isn't alot) and sulfur smell. We already booked 2 other weekends.

Beautiful and unique. The rock formations were amazing. Felt like something special. Exploring around led to many overhangs where you could camp as well. Nothing I have seen before.
The views for me were beautiful. Not sure what it would be like in the summer. Site was clean but around I did see some trash. I tried to pick some up..
My site at #8 was exactly what I wanted. Firepit already set up at the site. Climbing the rocks to get a better view was fun. Did I say beautiful.
I dont recommend anyone in a 2wd vehicle. You do need some clearance.

1)if you rely on att for cell service, during my stay I was never able to get cell service. The host does have WiFi available and that saved me! Not all camping spots can pick up the wifi as the wifi coverage is only at the front of the property.
2) During my stay, several stray random dogs cruised through the property. I share this in case you have dogs.
