The best mountainous campgrounds in Columbia River Gorge

Just an hour's drive from Portland, the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area is the biggest in the country. Among its many campgrounds is Eagle Creek, the first forest service campground in the USA.

Outside the national and state parks, you also find dozens of private campgrounds and RV parks on both sides of the gorge. Pitch a tent by a fishing lake, along a wild river, or amid a pine forest. If you're looking for solitude, backpacking is also allowed on more than 30 trails across the gorge.

You need at least a few days to see the region's famous sights. Multnomah Falls is the most iconic cascade in the area, roaring at 620 feet. At Beacon Rock State Park, you can gawk up at Beacon Rock. The towering outcrop is one of the most distinctive features of the Columbia Gorge.

The Mt. Hood area is your go-to spot for hiking trails, and the snow-capped peak even offers downhill skiing in the SUMMER! Along the Hood River, water sports enthusiasts get stoked for world-class windsurfing. Between adventures, be sure to grab a drink at one of the region's craft breweries or wineries.

However you choose to enjoy the gorge, remember to pack your rain gear—the region is famous for its daily drizzle. Since most campgrounds are situated near railways and the interstate, you may also want to bring earplugs.

Keep in mind there's no bad time to visit the Columbia River Gorge. July and August are the height of the tourist season, but they also boast the smallest chance of rain. For the most spectacular wildflowers, shoot for April through June. Of course, a fall camping trip puts you at the forefront of Hood River Valley harvests and stunning fall colors.

While our "Outlook / Nest" was severely damaged by the wildfire, the rest of the campsite is recovering well. We open May 22nd, 2026 and the camp season will run through October 31, 2026. We look forward to welcoming y'all back! **** We are new stewards and first-time homeowners of this serene, 10.5 acre homestead. 'Modern' human development on this land first began in old logging days in the early 1900s and old logging access road still runs through the center of our property. When we purchased this land in 2020, we knew we were investing in a real 'fixer-upper'. The original Buckminster Fuller geodome home was built back in the 1970s, and the outbuildings and garden spaces were later added on as the property changed hands over the decades. By the time we landed here, however, the home was in severe state of neglect. As we continue to care for and restore this home and land, we aim to use environmentally sustainable practices to minimize our impact on the land while upcycling, recycling, and re-using anything we can in the process! Open for the 2025 Season Play in Hood River during the day, relax in the country at night. We're 6.5 miles up in the hills, called High Prairie, above the sleepy town Lyle. Hiking, biking, kite boarding, windsurfing all within a few miles of reach with never ending opportunities to get your exercise. Just ask for tips. The land has mostly Oak trees where you can take your nap in your hang matt. The place is easy accessible, far away from all but still close to all Gorge attractions during the day. The town has a nice little convenience store, country cafe, Chinese restaurant, and new to our town "Confluence Cafe" right at the entrance by the Klickitat River - Awesome views - yummy treats and coffee. Matt and Ali are super cool, go check it out. Grocery shopping is best done in Hood River, White Salmon or The Dalles. Once up here, there isn't much, so come prepared.

A short drive will take you to Cascade Locks, Hood River, Carson, and White Salmon, where you can explore an array of shopping venues, delightful restaurants, local wineries, and breweries. Currently, Skamania Coves offers six RV spaces available for nightly reservations. Each space is equipped with full hookups, including 30 and 50 amp service, water, and sewer. We are pet-friendly and welcome well-behaved pets, but we kindly ask that they remain on a leash at all

We had a beautiful stay on the ridge with a view and an incredible river for a soundscape. The mist and the green and the sauna was incredible. The host was super responsive and helpful! Would totally come back

Weekend Trip to Romantic Forest Hide-a-Way

Absolutely adored this treehouse! The owners were great to work with and very accommodating, directions were very clear, and the overall scenery and aesthetic was absolutely adorable! I would be a bit careful with the roads and make sure your tires are up for the job. I got a flat from all the sharp rocks and found out the morning of check out, but the on-site neighbor Jeremy was a ton of help! The treehouse is quite secluded with a hot tub, oven, all the things you need. We hung out on the pull out couch downstairs while we played games. Absolutely adorable and cannot wait to go again!

Beautifully appointment and finished tiny house in majestic Pacific Northwest setting. Great views, tranquility and with a great sauna. Such a great retreat just over an hour from Portland. Would definitely come back to this one!

David’s property has all the amenities you need and nothing you don’t. Starlink, compost toilet outhouse, fire ring and picnic table. The quiet at night was incredible and helped foster a great nights sleep. There was a small hiccup on arrival (a tree had fallen across the driveway) but David was quick to reply and we were able to figure out a way in. Great spot for a little rest and relaxation!

Absolutely stunning location. The time I went was also superb in that no one else was camping so nature really presented itself. I saw bald eagles, great blue heron, salmon jumping up river. It was unforgettable. The sauna experience was lovely. There was a suggestion to pour water over rocks but I'd recommend that as mandatory to maintain heat & steam. There wasn't hot water which I didn't entirely mind since a cold outdoor shower after sauna was invigorating & exciting to the sense. The moment I wanted hot water was at end of stay when I had to dispose of the compost toilet liquids & wanted to wash hands with warmer water. It is a truly beautiful landscape & an enjoyable glamping experience.

Great little private spot! Stayed a couple of nights, had everything one would need. There is a composting toilet and portable water we didn’t use since we were in our RV. We were able to pick where we wanted to hike with lots of options out there.

The sites are all very unique. We loved out stay. Lots of salmon making a run up river right now. It was very cool to watch the salmon and also a big group of kayakers going by. Sites were clean. Wish we would have added the sauna add on. They looked really neat.

This was such a beautiful space! So thoughtfully designed and had everything we could’ve wanted. The walk down to the spot was a littler steeper than expected but absolutely worth it. The rain on the tin roof at night was so lovely. Host was also so accommodating and kind! Absolutely would come back to this space.

Thanks so much for our stay at Camp Hardy. The directions were spot on and so easy to follow. The campsite was remote and so quiet. There was hiking near by and bunnies munching plants down the road.

Beautiful property with a nice mix of woods and clearings. Very quiet (you can hear road traffic occasionally, but it wasn't a big deal). There was one other camper on the property and I only saw them as they were leaving. There are lots of primitive trails to explore and looks like there's a frisbee golf course in the works. The private porta-potty was clean and it was nice to have a well-water spigot nearby. The only minor quibble was there seemed to be some trash in the camp sites. I picked up around my site and added a few other bits from the neighboring site. Wasn't terrible, but it was noticeable. Remember to pick up after yourselves. The burn ban was still in effect, so unfortunately no fires on this trip. Maybe next time. I'll plan on coming back later in the fall or early Spring. Overall, it was a great weekend, and I do recommend it!

This is a great spot to camp at. We brought our little trailer and pulled up right to the platform area that was generous and size with a nice picnic table.. we had plenty of room in our campsite and the stargazing was amazing. It’s only 15 minutes outside of white salmon, making it a perfect home-base for activities that we wanted to do in the area. The host was super communicative and easy to deal with..
