Free camping for volunteers. The Spruill Farm belonged to the Spruill Family for over a hundred years and has been set up as conservation easement protected land in '23. It includes hardwood forest, swamp, a beautiful swimming beach* on the Albemarle Sound - one of the largest freshwater sounds in the world-, acres of farmland, vegetable garden and perhaps the largest fig orchard for hundreds of miles around. The purpose of the Spruill Farm is to further environmental research, promote ecological education and sustainable practices, and provide access for the public to the ever-diminishing shoreline experience. Please enjoy the incredible sunsets and woodland views, while respecting the serenity of this unique gem on the inner-banks. Wildlife on the property include Red Fox, River Otter, and 95 species of birds, including Bald Eagles (2 nests on the farm), nesting Osprey, Wood Ducks. Visit the 'Spruill Farm Conservation Project' on inaturalist(dot)org to see all 95 species, and upload any images from your observations. Because it is a nature preserve, please read the guidelines and rules closely if you choose to book with us. *Note: the shoreline changes with the wave action and the seasons. You can listen to the crickets and the birds chirping, and watch the squirrel as they jump and run from tree to tree.we are close to the beaches and are in close proximity of the national Forrest as well. The creeks around us contain small reds, trout, mullet, gar, and various other species. It’s great fishing for kids, and the area is known for much larger fish if you have a boat. (Note: we don’t have a boat ramp, but kayaks and paddleboards can be launched easily from shore.) The water is brackish, and locals typically don’t swim in it. We can accommodate up to eight full-size RVs in drive-through sites (up to 55' in length). Tow vehicles can be detached and parked separately. We can also host four trucks or vans up to 25' in length in back-in sites. RV slots have 50A power and water, while truck and van sites have 30A power and water. We also offer one primitive tent site, with three to four more planned, and a glamping tent coming in Spring 2026. What an amazing campsite! Stunning views over the Albemarle, well-marked nature trails, birdsong. Hawks over the fields during the day, barred owls at night! Very quiet, even with other campers on the property. Virtually no bugs (thank you November!) Julia and Lincoln are awesome hosts, easy to reach and very communicative. Look forward to coming back!

I had an awesome solo weekend getaway. Put simply the area was very private, you’re right next to the water, and you can mentally getaway. I had the pleasure of running into the owner (by accident on the way out, shout out to Julia) and she let me know of the walking trails that were around the property. Super sweet lady and she really cares about your experience. Just book it already and have a good time! I’ll be going back this winter!

I’m a solo female traveler, and safety is very important to me. I did car camping on Julia’s land, and it was such an amazing experience. You get the beauty of the farm, as well as a waterfront view on the campsite. I fell asleep to the sound of owl calls, and I woke up to the soft crashing of the waves. There are clearly marked trails throughout a wooded section of the property with pretty views of the water. I walked the trails before breakfast, and went for a swim in the sound before I left. It was a really peaceful space where I felt completely immersed in nature. I’m planning my trip back already. Thank you Julia, for sharing and maintaining this beautiful land, and for sharing your mission. I also appreciate you checking in on me and making sure everything was going well.

I love the seclusion of the campsites. There are only 3 and they are spaced apart for privacy. I also like that there are 2 port a potties! The only thing was ours was smelling something terrible when we were down wind of it. It obviously hadn't been dumped before we go there. The site itself is great, lots of trees, right on the water and a small sandy beach to walk on. I would live there if I could! Julia has made sure you had what you needed to have a great time. Large fire pit with benches all around and cleaning brushes to clean the top of the grate. Don't worry about water, there is an old hand pump for your water needs, to wash your hands, NOT to drink! If you like to explore there are trails in the woods that you can explore. I always feel very safe there as the gate to the property stays locked. It is the best campsite I have discovered so far. We had a blast using the kayaks and doing a little fishing (although we didn't catch anything but driftwood). This was our 2nd trip to this site and, as long as they'll have us, it will not be our last! We love Spruill Farm!

The campsite was beautiful and quiet! If you don’t like bugs being on you I wouldn’t recommend, they were pretty bad. But just a small downside to the beauty and peace! My dog enjoyed herself even though she doesn’t like water, lots to sniff.

Camping on the sound is absolutely beautiful, and the property is very nice and well taken care of. More than enough space to pitch tent, but I would reccomend a tarp or reinforced floor for tent campers. I definitely plan to visit again with some freinds!
