We bought this property in 2012 and have built several buildings and forged paths throughout the 32 acres. Our road is part of the North Country Trail, a footpath stretching over 4,600 miles from Middlebury in central Vermont to Lake Sakakawea State Park in central North Dakota.
While tearing down the existing house, we constructed two bedrooms in the pole barn for a quick living space. Once settled in the pole barn, we a built a small log cabin with already felled timbers from the local woods, except for the box frame which was purchased from the local Amish. Prior to building our permanent log cabin home, this small cabin was our camp site and is now being rented to people that want to relax and enjoy the outdoors. In the middle of the woods, we created a campground to be enjoyed by hikers and on the North side of our property is a tree line between two fields that is a great small camper/tent camping spot.

Come and enjoy our farm! Tails and Trails is a small family-owned horse farm in the Irish Hills of southeastern Michigan.
Our campsite sits in the middle of 30 acres of private woods. There is a fire ring with room for seating and a separate area to place your tent directly adjacent. There is also another sitting area and plenty of options to hang hammocks. The site is about a 10 minute or .5 mile walk through a beautiful wooded trail from the parking area.
We also offer scheduled horseback trail rides across our 82 acres, for people of all ages. (If you have small children please specify so we can discuss options.) Please send us a message if you are interested to inquire about availability or if there are any questions we can answer.
In addition to the many full-size horses, we also have several miniature horses, miniature donkeys, chickens, 5 dogs, barn cats, and a pot-belly pig. All of which love attention from humans of all ages.
We are a 420 friendly property as cannabis is legal in Michigan. There are 5 dispensaries in Adrian offering both Recreational and Medical cannabis products for sale. If you would like help or advice about the local market please just ask.
This is a pack it in, pack it out campsite. The closest source of potable water is in the barn or about a ten-minute walk from the site.
This is a perfect social distancing campsite however you are still only a 10-minute drive to the nearest grocery store and 20 minutes from some great swimming lakes, kayaking, and small-town allure in the Irish Hills area.
Ann Arbor is also only a 45-minute drive and has a bounty to offer anyone. We are very familiar with the city and can offer advice or suggestions if you'd like. There is a kayak rental in Tecumseh which is about 15 minutes away where you can do an entire river loop and return to the same place thus requiring only one vehicle.
There are also several close lakes where you can drop your own kayak in and explore. If you’d like some more amenities then Walter Hayes State Park or Lake Hudson State Park are both about a 20-minute drive.
We have trails throughout the woods and along with our fields for exploring. We welcome guests to wander and enjoy the property while respecting nature and all the things that live here. The area is alive with animals and creatures of all types. Families of deer and turkey call the farm home and don’t be surprised to hear a coyote howl at night. With natural water sources and different types of topography, we are blessed to have a variety of wildlife at our farm.
We keep to ourselves however are more than happy to accommodate reasonable requests and appreciate others getting to enjoy the beauty and serenity the country can offer.

Songdog Meadows is our little piece of joy, from morning swims in the pond, long walks with our retrievers and sunsets to take your breath away, it is truly and deeply a treasure we cherish. The property host a variety of apple trees, open grass land, and a large cluster of trees surrounding a 3/4 acre pond, while being surrounded by wood lots on three sides and open fields to the west. LARGE GROUPS - We are hosting events! Graduation parties, small weddings, family reunions, you name it. You can rent the whole campground for a day a night, a weekend, or a whole week if that suits your need. Just send us a message and we can talk about it. We can also accommodate large groups at a single campsite or you can rent several of them. Our primary guideline is that if your event will be held while other campers are here, it cannot disturb them. So, consider renting the whole campground.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please plan to arrive and set up camp between 3 and 9 PM. If you are planning to arrive after 9 PM, please send us a message letting us know. We decide on a case by case basis since we prefer not to have late arrivals. In any event we do not accept arrivals after 11 PM except in an emergency since many campers and your host may have already gone to bed.
Overview:
Our beautiful 10 acre farm and homestead is situated between Ann Arbor and Dexter not far from the Huron River. The 5 acre area where our campsites are located is wooded with mature oak, maple, walnut, elm, and white pine trees. We're isolated and surrounded by wild areas and natural farm land but just a 10 minute drive to restaurants, groceries, fuel, and other amenities. The Ann Arbor area is home to a huge array of world class events from the Ark music venue to National Champions Michigan home football games and a whole lot more. Downtown Ann Arbor or Dexter or Chelsea is only a 15 minute car drive. White Lotus Farms, which has a wonderful farm market on Saturdays from 9 - 2 and Wednesdays from 9 - 1, is a 10 minute walk down our dirt road. If you forget to bring something that you need, don't hesitate to ask! We've got a growing number of camping essentials for rent or sale for very reasonable prices that can make your stay even more enjoyable: from bug repellants to camp chairs, potable water in 2.5 - 5 gallon containers, and more.
NEW IN 2025 we have installed a hose with potable water near the entrance to the campground for your convenience.

This is a return visit to Big Oak Camp for me; I loved the site so much, I went back a second time in the same season! All the things I loved about Big Oak Camp the first time around remain true. It's a really pretty site that's priced very generously and that is very accessible and convenient from Ann Arbor. For being so close to Ann Arbor, the feeling of being all alone out in the woods is very good. There is good isolation from the residence as well as other camp sites on the property. It's a nice big site with lots of placement opportunities for even the biggest tents. It's fairly flat but has a slight overall grade just so it drains well. And it does drain well! This visit was after a few days of pretty heavy rains and the site was very usable and had dried out nicely. The quality of firewood provided by the host for fee is very good and there is lots of smaller forage wood around the campsite to help you get the fire started (and enough tree cover that you will be able to find some that's reasonably dry even after a strong rain a few days prior). Although I'm sure the cooler late summer temperatures helped, the site was fairly devoid of mosquitoes even when damp. And I easily kept busy all weekend with all the nearby outdoor rec opportunities! Caitlin was a great host and pretty hands off but easy to get in touch with if I needed her. Looking forward to returning many more times

Carl has a beautiful piece of land and some really lovely, private, and well-maintained campsites. He was there to greet us upon arrival and answer any questions we had, and being able to purchase firewood and rent a charcoal grill on site made the trip seamless! We loved the Hickory Hollow site and waking up to nature in the morning, and the many trails available to walk the property. Definitely recommend.

This is such a fun and well kept site! We have stayed here before and will be back again in the future, I’m sure. The road to the campsite would not accommodate and rv, but for us camping out of the back of our truck, it was perfect! There is a nice little bathroom and a fire ring as well as a mosquito netting tent for eating dinner or just hanging out! Our dogs love the many trails through the woods. Definitely recommended!

This is a super nice place! We had a great time and will definitely be back. The trails were very nice and open and it was absolutely gorgeous early in the morning. I was a little hesitant to make the trip due to the heat wave but everything worked out perfectly and the creek was super convenient for us. The only negative was a dog barking the whole night which set my dog on edge, but beyond that this was a dream stay. The campsite was very nice and conveniently had garbage cans and picnic tables.

Andy was super helpful upon arrival, very kind and accommodating! There’s a dog, Hazel, on site who is happy and playful as can be. The trails were short and all lead back to the same spot basically, which felt safe and easy to navigate — all in all it perfect for walking around with my dog and the site in general was just located in a great spot! I’ll definitely be back!!!

Hi! I stayed here a couple weekends ago and finally got a chance to sit down and write a review. This is a LOVELY campground.
They are so accommodating. It's perfect if what you need is an awesome, quiet nature spot. Darkness and beautiful stars. Trees for lazy hammocks, which we loved. I loved that it was semi-primitive. At one point I spied my teenage girls and what were they doing? Cartwheels. Flips. Chasing our dog around. No phones. Just enjoying nature. We also visited Sasha Farm Sanctuary, a couple minutes drive down the road. We loved this whole beautiful area so much. Manchester is full of trees and it's gorgeous. We spent an afternoon visiting Ann Arbor as well. My family said they want to repeat that entire trip. Our campsite had a way of feeling like home. We look forward to coming back! 💖🏕🌠🦋🌈

Pete and Olga have a beautiful property. We got a great walkthrough of our campsite and Pete graciously helped us get dry firewood after some heavy rains. My family loved seeing the fireflies come alight at night!

We had an amazing time, Kirsten and William we great hosts! The horse back riding lessons were so much fun.. We saw 5 deer, 10 turkeys and 2 sandhill cranes from the camp site. The campsite was nice and cozy and we will definitely be back again!!

Josh was super kind and patient! Met me at the gate later than I had originally intended to arrive and walked me to my site. It had just stormed so it was a little muddy but still great. Can't see the other campsite from this one, which is a pro for me. Would stay again!

This is a beautiful, serene, quiet spot! We lucked into it late in the day, and felt so fortunate. We rode our bikes on the gravel roads snd really enjoyed the birds and cicadas. They sang us to sleep.! Creekside Campsite is the best. Thank you!

Cowboy town is a one-of-a-kind treasure. We stayed in the very clean Bear cabin. The adorable shared bathroom was a short walk from the cabin. Very friendly host and property cats. Would like to stay again.
