There are several options for setting up your tent. You will be the only ones at Fernwood, or Fernwood 2 unless we happen to be up working on the land.  No matter where you set up you'll have your own private fire pit, and level ground for your tent(s).  Come and enjoy a quiet retreat, or use Fernwood as a base for many outdoor activities-biking, fishing, hiking-all nearby.  Natchaug Forest offers great trout fishing.  Goodwin State Forest is less than 3 miles away by car where you can put in a canoe on Pine Lake, amble through the wildflower and pollinator gardens, or enjoy the Education Center and Museum. From Goodwin, you can access the Air Line State Park Bike/Hiking Path.  Hampton also has a general store that has simple food, frozen dinners that Kara will heat up for you, gifts, and awesome Ice Cream Sodas! ( https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100085946253543&mibextid=LQQJ4d )  If you want a change from all that nature, there is Sharpe Hill Vineyard less than 10 miles away, as well as We-Li-Kit IceCream less than 6 miles.  The route to either place will take you through beautiful scenic farmland.  We hope you enjoy our forest and the surrounding area as much as we do.

2. Hickory Ridge

12mi from Amherst Center · 1 site · Tent, RV
Our property is 85 very private acres with an open field surrounded by forest and open wooded area with many trails. The forest is very diverse including some old growth maples and birches, as well as hemlock and pine trees. The campsites are at the edge of the field set back into the woods. I have recently added sand and gravel to improve drainage since the heavy rain we have had last year. We have a portable composting toilet outhouse and a hot outdoor shower. Feel free to explore all of the trails on foot or mountain bike. You may see some turkeys or deer out there. There is a small pond with lots of frogs and salamanders near the camping area, and a few seasonal streams on the property. You can hike a one mile loop on our newest trail. It is medium difficulty because of the hillside it is built on so hiking boots are recommended unless you are on a mountain bike. Rock walls built in the mid 1800s circle the property almost entirely so the borders are easy to see. The Deerfield river is a few miles away where you can fish for trout or go for a swim or kayak. The Connecticut river and the green river are about 15 minutes away as well. We have tubes, a canoe, and a kayak that are available to rent for some floating! Historic Deerfield village and Yankee Candle store and factory are about 10 minutes away. We are about 20 minutes from Northampton and Amherst.

4. Ballou Mountain Base Camp

32mi from Amherst Center · 1 site · Tent, RV
Experience Lower Ballou Mountain at the Base Camp Located in West Halifax, a small Southern Vermont town just north of the Massachusetts border, Base Camp sits along the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers (VAST) trail, tucked into the side of Ballou Mountain—one of many breathtaking peaks in the Green Mountains. The views here never fail to leave visitors enamored. Set up for primitive camping, Base Camp is a clean slate for anyone seeking the peace and quiet of the Vermont woods. The site is not equipped for RV hookups or indoor amenities. But what it lacks in facilities, it more than makes up for with direct access to incredible local hiking and easy on/off access to the VAST trail, which leads to the summit of our beloved Ballou Mountain. Bring your mountain bikes or ATVs and get exploring! Adventure at Base Camp is rewarding year-round. In the warmer months, pack your swimming gear for a dip at nearby South Pond—a perfect spot for kayaking as well. Don’t forget to stock up on supplies in Greenfield, MA (about 30 minutes away), or from one of the many local farm stands before heading off the grid. (Technically off the grid—but yes, there’s cell service here for those who can’t go fully unplugged!) As kids, we both spent countless hours exploring the woods, soaking up everything nature had to offer. Now, as adults and partners, we’re grateful to share that same love of the outdoors with others. With the support of our wonderful Vermont neighbors—who take pride in doing things the right way—we’ve built a retreat that embodies serenity. Perched on Ballou Mountain, Base Camp is more than just a campsite—it’s an invitation. Come and see for yourself.
