Nomadic camping
Best for self-contained campers. There are no toilets, showers, or potable water at this Hipcamp.
Experience Lower Ballou Mountain at the Base Camp. As guests, you have the whole, unspoiled place to yourself! A scenic drive along Rt. 112 brings you to West Halifax, a small Southern Vermont town just north of the Massachusetts border. Base Camp is a private 15 acre parcel that abutts the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers (VAST) trail, tucked into the side of Ballou Mountain, (misspelled by Google as Blue Mountain) one of many breathtaking peaks in the Green Mountains. With miles of trails and no structures on the property, the undeveloped meadow and woods combine with the views to provide a unique way to truly disconnect. Set up as a primitive camp site, Base Camp is a open field in an old orchard with no neighbors within several hundred yards, perfect for anyone seeking the peace and quiet of the Vermont woods. The site is not equipped for RV hookups nor indoor amenities. Though, what it lacks in facilities, it more than makes up for with privacy and direct access to incredible local hiking and easy on/off access to the VAST trail, as aforementioned, leading to the summit of our beloved Ballou Mountain. Bring your mountain bikes, hiking boots, cross-country skis, horses, snowmobiles, snowshoes, and curiosity, and get exploring! Base Camp is rewarding year-round. In the warmer months, pack your swimming gear for a dip at nearby South Pond, a perfect spot for kayaking as well. Don’t forget to stock up on major supplies in Greenfield, MA (about 30 minutes away), or from one of the many local farm stands or the nearby small town of Jacksonville before heading off the grid. (Technically off the grid, but yes, there’s some cell service here for those who can’t go fully unplugged!) And, in the colder months, it's a perfect jumping off point for snowmobilers to access the VAST Trail. As kids, we both spent countless hours exploring the woods, soaking up everything nature had to offer. Now, as adults and spouses, we’re grateful to share that same love of the outdoors with others. With the support of our wonderful Vermont neighbors, we’re proud to offer a retreat that embodies serenity. Perched on Ballou Mountain, Base Camp is more than just a campsite—it’s an invitation. Come and see for yourself! For more detailed information, please do not hesitate to reach out. -Megan & ErikExperience Lower Ballou Mountain at the Base Camp.
