Tucked among spruce, fir, and birch on Sunshine Island in Deer Isle–Stonington, Four Acre Woods began more than 60 years ago as a small, family-run campground known as Sunshine Campground. Travelers from across the world visited this quiet island forest, drawn to its raw beauty and the peaceful energy that generations before us had loved and cared for. The campground eventually closed in the 1990s and sat untouched for over 15 years—its trails, clearings, and old campsites slowly reclaimed by the woods. The land waited, quietly, for someone to bring it back to life. In the years that followed, Caleb, a longtime local operator on the island, took interest in the property. Recognizing both its history and its potential to offer people a deeper experience of Deer Isle’s natural beauty, he began the process of carefully restoring and reopening the land. Working season by season, Caleb rebuilt the sites, added new infrastructure, re-established utilities, and designed a campground that honors the land’s roots while offering a comfortable, modern, and nature-forward experience for today’s guests. In July 2020, the property reopened under a new name: Four Acre Woods. Today, it blends the spirit of the original Sunshine Campground with thoughtful stewardship, simple comforts, and a deep respect for the forest that surrounds it. Visitors once again gather under the birches and spruces—sharing campfires, slow mornings, quiet nights, and the timeless island calm that makes this land so special. So— Welcome Home. Sincerely, The Caretakers of Four Acre Woods

You will be cozy either way the temps go. There is a lovely porch on the log home where you can sit and enjoy the sunset and lots of wildlife activity. The back yard has tether ball and lots of seating as well as the good sized fire pit with ghosts of hundreds of fireside chats gone by. I look forward to ours! Stonecipher Farm, is a working farm, producing a wide array of organic fruits vegetables, using no-till agriculture techniques. We supply all of Portland's best restaurants, as well as many stores along Maine's coast. We also have an on farm store! The farm's ecosystem is the priority. As a result, our crops thrive, the humans working are comfortable and at peace, and nature, co-mingles with us, in a beautiful Garden of Eden sort of way. The farm receives a lot of attention and accolades, for our progressive farming style, and the beauty of the farm. Try googling us up. The experience here can be as much described in terms of flower and bird species, as by crops. We are near to Richmond village, where there are several dining and take out options, as well as a small grocer, and hardware store. There is little we need that we can't get right in Richmond. This is our first foray into opening the farm up to the public. We hope to host folks that wish to be within , and among the farms workings. The comings and goings of the produce and the people who care for it, are a peaceful back drop, making it feel like a farming neighborhood. The tiny house for rent, is situated with an ideal view of all farm operations, while also feeling private and tucked away. It has a kitchen, hammock and pic table, and is within 100 feet of bath/shower, and parking. Guests can walk the gardens, sit by the pond, walk down to the tidal falls, walk the hundreds of acres of conservation land adjacent to the farm, or check out the abandoned rail line, which folks can walk to town on. From Bowdoinham , folks can strike out to all Maine's attractions. 30 minutes to Harpswell, 45 minutes to Popham, 45 minutes to Reid, 45 minutes to Boothbay, and the Botanical Gardens; about an hour and a half to Western destinations, falls, mountains, lakes. 2 hours from MDI.

Arbor Camp is a collection of thoughtfully designed cabins and treehouses set on 30 private acres in the Maine woods offering a secluded forest retreat on the Union River—private and peaceful, yet just minutes from the shops, restaurants, and year-round charm of downtown Ellsworth. Located 30 minutes north of Acadia National Park, it’s an ideal base for exploring the mountains, woods, lakes, and rugged shoreline that define Downeast Maine. With nearly half a mile of river frontage, a stream, and over a mile of hand-cut walking trails, Arbor Camp’s thirty acres provide ample space to unwind without leaving the grounds. Two cabins and a treehouse sit in an open field with wide views of the river and its passing wildlife. The remaining treehouses are thoughtfully spaced across 25 acres of quiet forest, offering privacy and a sense of deep immersion in the trees. Many enjoy filtered river views through the canopy. Each season brings its own pleasures: temperate summer days and cool, starlit evenings; fall foliage and crisp air; the stillness of snow-covered woods in winter; and, in spring, a quiet reawakening as color and life return to the forest. Arbor Camp began in 2022, when three friends came together to build a quiet place in the woods. Thirty acres along the Union River in Ellsworth offered the space—and the inspiration—for something lasting. The project was shaped by Maine’s camp tradition: simple, seasonal dwellings that invite stillness, comfort, and connection to the land. We followed the path of an old roadbed to guide our layout, preserving as many trees as possible. Cabins and treehouses are spaced for privacy and quiet, and walking trails were cut by hand to follow the natural shape of the land. Wildlife is part of daily life here. Songbirds call from the canopy. Heron and eagles pass overhead. Deer move through the understory, and turkeys wander the clearings. Mushrooms—chanterelles, black trumpets, and others—rise through the forest floor in season. From the start, the idea was simple: to create a place that feels good to step into. Each of us brought different experiences—design, building, creative work—but shared a clear vision: spaces that are well made, deeply comfortable, and in tune with their surroundings.

Currently, we are recovering the farm house and adjacent structures with the generous assistance of a group of volunteers and we are endeavoring to bring the soil on the land back to life by making the land accessible to a nearby regenerative farmer. We offer you the opportunity for a rich and out of the box experience.

Arbor Camp Acadia Cabins/Treehouses

16. Arbor Camp Acadia Cabins/Treehouses

46mi from Rockland · 3 sites
