Located off the beaten path so amazing for star gazing but also close enough to the Sand Dunes for day adventures. Our property is off the grid and allows you to disconnect for a little while and there is a nice creek to go and sit by. Each stay also includes a farm tour if you are interested. Base Camp Family Campground is owned and operated by the Baker Family. Josh Baker first lived in Southern Colorado in the early 90's as a child, but his family moved away after a short time. His desire to move back here as an adult prompted him to start bringing his own family to Colorado for vacations. They purchased land in the valley in 2014 and moved to Colorado in 2020. They are using all they've learned from years of RV adventures, to continue the park's mission of providing a clean, affordable, spacious, well-run camping facility, and to be a centrally located "base camp" and hub of information for everything this unique area has to offer.
You'll be camping in the shadows of 14,000 ft. mountain peaks, in the largest high-desert alpine valley in the world, that is sprinkled with free-flowing artesian wells, hot springs and wet lands. Daily summer temperatures average 65 degrees, and it will get down into the 50's at night. That's perfect camping weather!
For native American tribes, including the Utes, Apache, Navajos, and others, this valley is considered the source of life, a place where humans and spirit enter and leave this world. The valley was considered so sacred, that no war would be waged here.

As if all of the mountains, deserts, hot springs, and sacred ground weren't enough, The San Luis Valley is also known as a UFO hot spot! UFO sightings have been reported as far back as the 1600's.

5 off-grid acres down the road from Great Sand Dunes National Park!
The property will be marked with painted sticks, spaced about 30ft apart from one another. You will need to access the property by turning onto Highway 150, then left onto 3rd St. Next, take the first right onto Ash St, then the first right onto 4th St. Go down the road and locate our property on the left side of the road. The approximate coordinates for the front of our lot are 37.4932, -105.6076. We recommend using Google Maps to get there. Apple Maps does not do as well with coordinates.
Feel free to take your vehicle off the driveway, just be mindful of our land! There will also be a fire pit for your convenience, but do not leave any trash or food after you leave. Please make sure to put out all fires completely.
Even though this is primarily a Tent site, RVs and Campers are welcome. However, there is no electricity or any water hookups on the property, but the views and privacy make up for it!
You are about 15 minutes south of the Great Sand Dunes and 20 minutes from downtown Alamosa.

The Rabbit Hole Ranch offers beautiful night skies with little to no light pollution and unobstructed views of the majestic Blanca Massif. The Great Sand Dunes and Zapata Falls is just a (gorgeous) 35 minute drive.
Camping here at the Rabbit Hole Ranch is primitive and dispersed (no numbered sites) and there 30 acres available for you to use. Just follow the signs to the designated area and pick out a spot you like.
Some spots have fire rings, some don’t. We are working on getting more, but in the meantime you’re welcome to bring your own. Or feel free to dig out a little hole. It works great and is easy to extinguish when you fill it back in and bury it. Please do not bury any trash.
Typically, you will experience a rare kind of solitude and silence that feels…. other-worldly, with incredible sunrises and sunsets filling the enormous skies.
On holidays, however, expect it to be busy.
Our only dog, Boudicca, is a working dog and she is more than happy to help keep you and your pets safe. Please help make her job easier by not leaving any food or trash in or around tents. Her name is Boudicca (BOO duh kuh) and she lost her two besties last year, so she needs extra love and treats!
Please keep your pets on leash or under control until you’re comfortably certain they get along with our dog. And please report any issues promptly.
Quiet time begins at 10:00 pm.
Note: Holidays still offer the excellent location and spectacular views, but are likely to be less quiet and far more busy. We typically do not strictly enforce quiet time during holidays.

Has a camp stove but we had a problem getting it to light, so we used our own. The only issue was some barking from nearby dogs intermittently during the night that woke me up a few times, but obviously that's outside the owners control. Overall we enjoyed our stay!

It’s a little rough getting to the campsite but once you are there it is worth the trouble. You really need a high clearance vehicle and 4WD to get there. Follow the instructions and keep your eyes peeled for the references and you shouldn’t have any trouble finding the campsite. The 300ft to the campsite from the parking spot isn’t amazing but it is nice and private and quiet at the campsite. Bring everything you need and pack it back out when you are done. There wasn’t a picnic table so bring your own camp table. Beautiful 360 degree views. Camp here!

Cheves's Yurt was about 30 mins north of Taos, make sure you make it down there for some tacos and art. Cheves has done a nice job of setting up this off-grid yurt. The outhouse is nice, he's got electricity (for charging and lights - but not for big electronics) and heat to keep you warm at night. Bring extra layers if coming in winter, but we loved our stay (obviously, this is off grid camping folks with a nice mattress), it was beautiful and affordable and comfortable. FYI there are free roaming dogs in the area - I would like to come back in the summer and use the outdoor shower! Cool place. There is a burner for coffee, but you do need to bring anything you want to cook. Thanks Cheves.

This is a great location, about 30 minutes away from the sand dunes. It’s definitely big rough friendly, so it was overkill for me in my little van. The views were amazing and the facilities were immaculate - previously the nicest and cleanest I’ve ever experienced. I would definitely stay here again if needed.

Incredible location and one of the most beautiful spots we’ve ever camped at!!! The drive got a little rough right before the site but honestly was to be expected being so remote and was easily managed. Site was easy to spot and we were able to quickly able to set up camp before sunset and take in that incredible view!!

This was an amazing stay. We would highly recommend staying here. The yurt was very clean and the surrounding area is beautiful. It was amazing to sit outside and look at the sparkling night sky.
