1948- On January 1, 1948 a wildcatter named George Hadley, who had been oil prospecting in the valley for 10 years, made the first oil strike in the Cuyama Valley. Richfield Oil Company soon moved in and extracted nearly 300 million barrels of oil in just a few short years. To accommodate an exploding workforce in the early 1950s, the company built the town of New Cuyama, its infrastructure, public buildings, the Cuyama airstrip (L88) and all the industrial structures that are now home to Blue Sky. Richfield Oil Company, later merging with Atlantic Oil Company forming the Atlantic Richfield Oil Company (ARCO), created high-paying jobs, a safe and prosperous community, and developed schools, churches, and recreational areas for the employee-residents.1973- With dwindling production in the area and new discoveries in Alaska, Atlantic-Richfield Oil Company put the town of New Cuyama and its associated infrastructure up for sale. Word of an entire town for sale made its way to entrepreneur, Russell O’Quinn of the Foundation for Airborne Relief (FAR) and Mildred Dotson, a wealthy widow from Tulsa, Oklahoma. The two worked together to acquire the townsite and adjacent land. O’Quinn, an aviator, inventor, and test pilot, aspired to use the New Cuyama airstrip and facilities as a base for humanitarian relief and a non-profit trade school. Though not fully realized, FAR’s primary vision included utilizing converted military aircraft to airlift food and medical supplies to developing countries and global disaster areas. Dotson had loftier goals. Her plans included an 18-hole fly-in golf course, expansion of the Buckhorn Restaurant and Motel, and a 40- to 50-acre lake for amphibious landing and water sports. 1986- Another visionary, Harry Kislevitz, inventor of the popular design tool Colorforms® and founder of Future City/Villages International, sought to develop the site as a “City of Friendship,” an all-electric village of 5,000 earthen homes. The dwellings were to be designed by Nader Khalili, an Iranian-born architect who specialized in earthen structures, worked with NASA on prototypes for lunar homes and received an award from the United Nations for his work towards the development of low cost, sustainable structures for human shelter in impoverished and disaster prone environments. One 628-sq-ft Khalili prototype remains on the property today ("the Cantina"). Khalili went on to form the California Institute for Earth Art and Architecture, Cal-Earth, in Hesperia, CA.1993- Recognizing the transformative potential of clean, solar power and the attractiveness of a rural destination, entrepreneur Mike Nolan worked to develop the Solar Skypark and Big Sky Guest Ranch with Santa Barbara Architect, Barry Berkus. The Sky Park included plans for sixty-five fly-in residences on one-acre lots powered completely from clean, solar energy. The Big Sky Guest Ranch was intended to function as a clubhouse for Skypark residents complete with an equestrian center, a small subsistence farm, pool and plenty of enriching recreational activities. 2012- At the end of 2011, the Zannon Family Foundation made a long-term investment in acquiring the New Cuyama Airport property with the vision of rehabilitating the site to be a low-cost resource for programs and organizations working to advance sustainable living practices and technologies. Plans began soon after towards developing a framework and organization to develop the space and coordinate with prospective programs and institutions. In 2014 Blue Sky Sustainable Living Center ("Blue Sky Center") received 501(c)(3) not-for-profit status, endeavoring to reclaim this property for the public good. Today, Blue Sky Center provides unduplicated services and technical assistance to support small businesses and entrepreneurs as well as the local food system, with core work focused on community research and advocacy led by Cuyamans. Rustic is the theme here. There is no shower, no wifi, and no electricity available, but you will enjoy your own private spigot and the cellular service is acceptable.
For any sites located south of Ballinger Wash, your vehicle length is limited to 22' and no more than 4' overhang from the rear axle, so you don't get stuck in the crossing and block access for others. Towing services are 1-3 hours away.
Our Songdog Camps are sparsely scattered atop a 200 foot mesa that looks west over a valley offering stunning desert sunsets and amazing stargazing. These UPPER SITES are NOT OHV friendly, but any of our canyon bottom sites are a great base for your riding adventures up in Ballinger Canyon OHV. We'll be happy to recommend a site for you. **Forest Service law enforcement is actively ticketing unplated OHV on Ballinger Canyon Road. Be sure to know and abide by the laws.**
Our friendly cancellation policies vary between 24 hours for simple campsites and 72 hours for our Glamp sites and Group sites. Songdog Ranch is one of my favorite places to be. It is close enough to the city to not feel completely isolated, but far enough to do the best stargazing you have done in your life. My mom is not a camper and she was already talking about coming back. My dad wants to try the larger cabin and my 12 year old son loves it here. It's hard to get him interested in something that does not have wifi. The mattresses in the glabin were INSANELY COMFORTABLE. I will come back to this beautiful place.

The site was fantastic! It was great for our group with 4 families. Harmony has an amazing kitchen set-up at each site but we all shared the main one. Kids and adults had fun in the river below the yurts, playing ping pong and cornhole, sitting around propane campfire at night, taking warm showers, and hiking to the waterfall (it was a good challenge for us all). We loved the fun yurts and they had the most comfortable beds. They were a far cry from sleeping in tents in sleeping bags on the ground.

This was our very first HipCamp experience. We had been road tripping for our pup's 11th birthday and we stayed one night. We absolutely LOVE the rustic architecture of the cabin (and the deco) and especially the garden (the pictures on the app don't do it justice). We arrived shortly after check-in time to rest under the shade of the trees/plants selection. We loved learning about the history of the cabin.
We unfortunately have to point few things about this hipcamp.
* The entrance of the property, even though it says in the directions to be "in front of" was hard to see from the road: no signs, no number, dirt entrance doesn't indicate it is the actually alley to take. We thought we were at a wrong address.
* The rentals on the app seem to indicate 2 cabins only but there is a RV next to cabin 2 + a main house + another unit which we had no idea if they were rentals or not.
* Quiet time of 10 pm was not respected by the other guests which we found out we had at 1.30 am when they came back and made loud noises (cabin 1 + RV). When you are staying for 1 night and road tripping, sleeping is important. Quiet time is indicated on a sheet of paper in the kitchenette only, which people might not read.
* Cabin is located next to a major road that gives you access to downtown easily but that means you hear traffic.
* A pet fee is also requested to be left in the cabin prior to your departure but not indicated on the app. We understand for long stay but not for one night.

2 nights at Cuyama Oaks Ranch
Pink Pony 2 yurt had all the views of the night sky to view the Perseid shower and see the Milky Way. The supplied pots, pans and chairs under the covered small patio and creature comforts of the comfortable bed made for a wonderful 2 night stay in mid August. Nathan was very kind and attentive to answer our questions. The new donkeys and small horse were a fun bonus to see. We will be back next year to also see the surrounding hills in all the green glory of spring.

This home couldn’t have been more perfect for our family of 6. Beautiful location. Kids had a blast exploring. Watching local wildlife and catching lizards and frogs. Hosts were absolutely fantastic. 10/10 and hope to be back!

Perfect spot for stargazing! Nate's attention to detail is top notch, so many adorable and thoughtful touches at this site. The solar batteries made it so we were never left without power. Yes it's hot during the day, but soaking in the cowboy tub really helped, and the tent cooled way down at night. The animals are adorable, and Nate made sure to give us eggs for our first morning there. Beds are comfy and cozy, the yurt is more spacious than you'd think, and the donkeys provide plenty of comedic relief. Absolutely wonderful stay!!

Weekend Trip to Cuyama Badlands
Surreal place! We arrived at night for stargazing and couldn't ask for more for the money. Shooting stars, milky way all in quite and privacy. The host is a very friendly guy! Bonus: lots of quails running around the farm :)

Nice camper. Retro microwave and fridge worked great. Bed was nice and comfy. Couch was small but my 12 y/o slept through the night on it without issue.

Harmony’s is an absolute gem! The site, accommodation, and waterfall are all fantastic. Was great for both those who love camping and those who prefer more amenities, this place has the perfect balance. Harmony is also extremely helpful, kind, and accommodating.

Fantastic spot. So beautiful and remote and cozy. The stars were amazing. One of those unforgettably childhood moments for my kids!! ✨ we were there on a particularly warm day but once the sun went down we slept well and cozily 😊 great care and lovely people. Good and clear directions
