The ownership of the land has been held since 1883 by the Summit Lime Company and was until the 1930's the site of several lime quarries one of which was used to supply material for the Owens valley to Los Angeles aquaduct. Current utilization is for recreation, private hunting club, timber production, and cattle grazing. The campground was built in 1967 to provide a location for church, non-profit, and youth groups to enjoy a private, and safe location for outdoor recreation activities. Camping is restricted to family and group activities. The campground has 17 sites a comfort station, water hook-ups, fire ring, and 4X8 foot stone BAR-B-Que. The Chumash called the peak of Mount Piños the center of the universe, or center of the world depending on the translation. This campground is at the southeast base of this mountain. The San Andreas fault is just about 8 miles away, and many other faults meet nearby. The mountains here are full of geological signs of the Forces that ripped away Santa Barbara from the North American plate as it was flipped upside down. This is the entrance to the Enchanted Forest. Learn more about this land: Lockwood Valley is so close to Los Angeles and other urban areas, but feels 1000 miles away. Our neighborhood is a gem within Lockwood Valley. The community has less than 20 residences so it is very rural, but neighborly. There are horses nearby, you will hear some roosters in the distance, and if you are lucky, you may hear the African lions or wolves from the next canyon over where there is a (fully contained) wildlife sanctuary called Steve Martins Working Wildlife (not the funny guy). Great secluded spot for a fully contained RV. Easy entrance from a good dirt road. The actual property of the site is 1/8 of an acre and is surrounded by forest and fields. A picnic table is nestled in a grove of trees next to a steel fire pit ring. Bring your hammock to relax under big shady piñon pines. The site is about 200 yards from the entrance to the Los Padres National Forest with great hiking, mountain biking, birdwatching, hunting, etc. There is currently no privacy barrier between the campsite and the dirt road, but the traffic is extremely minimal. There are two 12’x24’ horse corrals on the property. This area is ideal for horseback trail riding and the campsite location makes for the perfect base camp. This is a superb stargazing spot, far from the city lights. Many amateur astronomers come to this area for the dark skies. At a mile high, nights can be very cold, and in the winter it is possible to get up to a couple feet of snow. Weather conditions such as heavy rain or snow can make the roads and campsite impassable at times so cancellations are possible in this case (this happens a lot less than we would like, of course, because we need the precipitation!).

I stayed in this cozy, self‑contained space for a few days of rest and writing. The privacy was excellent, and support was always just a moment away whenever I needed it. The bed was comfortable, and the shower was fantastic. Although the fridge was small for a longer stay, that’s a minor issue—I’ll be better prepared next time. This getaway spot is truly worth it. From the front door, I walked to the trailhead and hiked a gentle 2.5‑mile ascent alongside a snowmelt creek. The effort was rewarded with an amazing view of the valley I’d just walked up. Will utilize again and try the food on offer next time.

Weekend Trip to Lone Juniper Ranch

This place far exceeded our expectations! We planned on a nice relaxing weekend and seeing some animals but the amount of animals and the overall scenery in the mountains was incredible. The cabin was very cozy and warm during the chilly evenings and it was so peaceful sitting by the fire or enjoying our coffee outside while admiring the animals. All of the animals were super friendly and overall unaffected by your presence. The staff pretty much left you alone but was very pleasant and informative whenever we crossed paths. They answered any and all questions we had while dropping off carrots, firewood and tending to the animals.

We had a lovely time here and would definetely come back in the future! The hosts were very nice, quick to reply, and took the time to show us around different camping spots to pick from. The property and surrounding area is beautiful and there's a lot of interesting places to explore. The creek isn't hard to cross with any regular car which isn't too close to the ground. The animals were great too, they got some beautiful highland cows and horses which came up to us to say hello. There's a lot of bones around the property if bone collecting is your thing. They also got three shepard/guard dogs which are very friendly. We were the only campers there when we went so having them around at night really put our minds at ease. As others have said you lose signal relatively soon after you exit the highway and take Caliente, so plan accordingly

The cabin itself was absolutely delightful — cozy, peaceful, thoughtfully stocked with everything we needed, and directly across from a sweet little group of alpacas. The space and scenery felt like an excellent value for the price, and my girls absolutely loved our stay. We did add on a few extras (carrots for the animals, firewood, and a sauna visit), and while we enjoyed each of these, the communication around them felt a bit unclear. I had to reach out multiple times to coordinate, and we received less firewood than expected close to dark. The sauna was also not ready at our scheduled time, and we weren’t given clear parking instructions — which led to some confusion upon arrival. None of this ruined our stay, but it did make the add-on experience more stressful than anticipated. Overall, the cabin and location were wonderful, and with clearer communication around the extras, this would easily be a five-star stay.

Weekend Trip to Wandering Star Ranch

Great site and area, would definitely recommend. Nobody else is nearby so you have the privacy of the whole lot. All amenities onsite are well taken care of. Everything we needed was there and the bathroom was freshly cleaned for us. The shooting range onsite was great and having the BLM Land right against the property line was awesome. Highly recommend.

4 nights at Bare All Retreat

As inexperienced campers, I’m not sure what we were expecting, but this place was pretty great! Their 3 big, fluffy dogs hung out with us the entire time, which was a dream come true for me and my dog. She loved being off leash, romping with the dogs, and running through the stream (best days EVER). Their horses came near our site on the last day and it was so nice watching them peacefully grazing and drinking from the stream. As I mentioned, we’re pretty inexperienced campers and had to leave early due to the cold. Just know whatever the weather apps say, it probably be a bit cooler since it’s nestled between rocky hills. We definitely want to return when it’s warmer or come back better prepared.

2 nights at Spirit Walk - Private Retreat

John was very patient as I was a Hipcamp newbie. I was also coming in last minute on a cold and chilly January night. He gave excellent directions and in the morning I was treated to a beautiful crisp Sierra morning. Location was private and beautiful, but the sound of all winter creek rushing close by. I had the place to myself, but there was plenty of room between locations. I would gladly go back and hope to a in warmer weather. :)

The property is absolutely beautiful! We stayed at the Stargazer spot where we had plenty of room and a cozy fireplace. The bathroom was clean and well kept and the property was equipped with an extremely well stocked easy to use kitchen. We will definitely be staying again!

3 nights at Wandering Star Ranch

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Mark‘s Hipcamp. It was perfect for four teenage boys and a dog to run around and let loose. We used it as a basecamp to explore Sequoia National Park and Lake Isabella. There is a pontoon, a large concrete slab with picnic tables, and a clean porta-potty. We happened to get excellent weather during late December and the property was green and beautiful. There is hiking to mountains directly behind the property as well as ORV trails. Plus, there are beautiful views of the lake and mountains. We also ordered the $60 bundle of wood that had large high-quality logs. Mark was quick to respond to questions and offered us advice for places to go. Overall, this property exceeded our expectations. I highly recommend this Hipcamp! (as a sidenote, do not follow the directions from Apple or Google to turn off Larson. You can take Larson from the highway all the way back to the property.)

An awesome place to stay! The animals were such a special treat to visit. The directions were very good. We traveled in with our class C Rv and the road in was fine. Definitely a place to stay.
