Next to the Bears Ears National Monument, between Valley of the Gods and Monument Valley along the San Juan River is Mexican Hat where you can camp on private property...as this is NOT on the Navajo Reservation, alcohol is allowed. So many things to see! Goosenecks State Park, Natural Bridges, Moki Dugway, Cedar Mesa! Camp on this private estate that was founded in the 1890's by gold and oil prospectors and where John Wayne later crossed the river in several western movies! The night skies are unbeatable as is the quiet solitude that is sadly disappearing in other areas. Mexican Hat Rock and this portion of the San Juan River are accessible only through this estate that is open for your enjoyment, however, if you wish to camp we now ask for a small fee so we can keep it clean, maintain roads and continue our conservation efforts so all can enjoy it forever! A historic farmstead in the high desert with an 80-year-old heritage apple orchard, pond, dry land cliff, and large trees. Incredible sunset views, dark skies for star gazers, and only a 20 minute drive to the Mesa Verde Park entrance. This is a great stay for animal lovers: we have a flock of domestic geese, two alpacas, a very fluffy and friendly dog, a black curious cat, and a waddle of ducks who will all want to say hello at some point (don't worry, the geese are friendly). Enjoy visits from wild friends such as deer (including a rather impressive group of stags), hawks, and eagles. In the fall you can pick apples from the trees. In the summer, guests can enjoy cherries, plums, and apricots. There are a few camp spots to choose from on our property: in the orchard with views of Sleeping Ute Mtn, near the pond, or on top of our cliff (a bit of an adventure to bring your gear up, but you'll have some great views). Campers must have a self-contained system, no facilities are available at this time. Fires may not be possible depending on the area's current fire risk. Propane camp fire pits are A-ok. This is an animals-lovers location - there may be some noise from them.

Loved it! A high open plain ringed with mountains: Mesa Verde and Ute close, Telluride, San Juans and Bears Ears on the horizon. Immaculately clean and generous kitchen and dining/hanging out areas. The tent/RV sites are very basic but the rest makes up. Great hosts, dark sky. Didn’t see inside the cabins but the hogan was lovely.

It is a remote space and you feel so small being surrounded by the mountains. Love this open, vast area that holds a space for people to be in nature safely. The kitchen is well stocked with goodies. Everything is a quick stroll away from the teepee. The bathroom has adorable art and quotes on the wall to brighten the space up. Our teepee was warm, spacious and cozy! It rained over night and listening to the rain hit the teepee was calming. Wish we were here for two nights, but we had a quick over night stay. Love this spot and would totally come back.

I loved dry camping at Mexican Hat Rocks! What a gorgeous site! The individual campsites are well-marked. It appeared an access gate was being installed during our stay, which is good. Several cars pulled off beyond the large area next to the road and drove into the campground to park in the roads and empty campsites to take photos. That's an issue the access gate will solve. Fantastic experience overall!

This place is absolutely stunning! I have never seen so many stars before and the campsites are spaced out far enough it felt liek a private retreat. They have restrooms, showers, and a community kitchen with every cooking utensil you may need. The restrooms were so clean and the camp manager was so kind!

I car camped here and had a super sweet one-night stay where all my needs were met. The land is beautiful, gorgeous sunset and sunrise, and it was sweet to have communal space like the kitchen, showers, bathrooms, and more. The camp hosts were very sweet and welcoming! I would definitely camp here again and would recommend it.

We enjoyed our stay. The Raven tipi was comfortable and spacious for three of us + gear. And to have the kitchen to use was fantastic! And the freezer & ice maker made our water situation for desert hiking so easy. Bathrooms were super clean. Shower building was good too. Rustic, and walled in, but open to the air. Chatting with folks from all parts of the US was a nice bonus too. And our second morning there, we were greeted by a raven perched on top of the tipi. Highly recommend. And if you walk the trails to the bathrooms at night using a headlamp, see if you can spot the sparkles on the ground.

Easy in, easy out. We took the area very near the entrance. Lots of people in/out for photos of the “hat” but all were respectful of our space. We drove down further after unhooking to see what other spots looked like. We are a 40’ 5-er; others might have worked but maneuverability would have been tight. Our spot was ideal and easy leveling. The road in and out is certainly no worse than many boondocking spots. Just, as usual, take it slow. Beautiful spot, thanks to JL for making it available.
