This area conforms to the Arizona Dark Sky initiative, and while we are not dark-sky certified, we've had several guests compliment us on our beautiful skys. When it comes to rockhounding, or amateur geology, this is a fantastic area for exploration and study. We gladly welcome pets, as long as you take care of all their needs, including cleaning up any mess and filling in any holes. Well mannered, friendly dogs may be unleashed from time to time. Please, PLEASE watch your small pets carefully. If you're traveling with cats, please keep them on a lead. There is a riding academy and boarding facility adjacent to our property, and a long pleasant trail allows horseback riders, hikers and cyclists to travel along the Verde Greenway into Old Town Cottonwood, a pleasant 30 minute walk through lush riparian area. Hawks Hideaway is a family owned property, occupied by a 3rd and 4th generation, mother-son team. Two generations have lived and died here before us and we are proud to be the custodians of this majestic property, full of old growth, gigantic cottonwood trees. A birdwatcher, or naturalists dream. Hawks Hideaway is a natural and secluded spot located directly adjacent to the state-maintained Verde River Greenway. This means you may encounter wildlife and pests associated with being in such close connection to nature. Hawks Hideaway is next to many miles of wilderness. You may see or encounter wildlife of all kinds, most are harmless, some are dangerous. It is your responsibility to know the difference. Be prepared to tuck your food away and bring ample protection from the insects. You are responsible for your own safety and are camping here at you own risk. Gather around the propane operated firepit in the backyard for some R&R. Bring a hammock 'cuz there are unlimited opportunities for stringing one up! Tons of activities will keep you occupied, including hiking and biking on the nearby Arizona Trail (just 1/2 mile away), or even sledding on your very own private 2 acre piece of paradise! What's even better is the property backs onto the National Forest, for unlimited enjoyment of nature. In the evening crack open a book, or start playing a game with your besties to close out a long day. The property is completely off the grid, making it very appealing to those travelers and adventurers who want to create a minimal carbon footprint on their vacation. The kitchen sink has a hand pump that draws water from under the sink from a 10 gallon water jug. You can refill the jug as needed from a hand pump located in the back yard. There is solar powered lighting and a USB phone charger station. There is no electrical power available. Cell service is available in the area depending on your carrier. The outdoor composting toilet is super clean with little or no odor. The cabin is located at 8200' in the San Francisco Peaks in the pines and aspens. Snowshoe or cross country ski, go sledding or snowmobiling, or just good old fashioned relaxation will make the time fly by. From the very beginning, our hosts Gary and Daren were exceptional — incredibly kind, thoughtful, and great communicators both before and during our visit. They went above and beyond to help us celebrate my birthday weekend with family, making extra accommodations that made the trip feel truly special. The property itself is magical. The sunsets were breathtaking, the land peaceful and full of beauty. We loved exploring the hike down to the canyon and creek — it felt like a hidden paradise. The paddle boards and kayak added so much fun to our days, and every part of the stay felt relaxing and rejuvenating. You can tell Gary and Daren pour their hearts into this place. Very close to Verde Adventures Kayaker Pick-Up spot for Kayakers (walking distance), and not too far from Beasley Flats, (a few of minutes by car.) Love the private property access to the river for OTTERLIMITS users only. (walking distance). Would recommend a 4WD if not walking to this part, it was rutty and muddy. You don't want to get stuck! OTTERLIMITS had a big fire pit, big opening in the trees for Astronomy viewing, took my spotting scope, it was nice. Also used for birding, saw many gaggles of geese in formation flying south for the winter. There was plenty of kindling around to start a fire. Gene was a gracious host, offered some fire wood if we needed it. Loved the distant sounds of cows and coyotes in the background, and fall leaves in some areas. I highly recommend this spot. But don't go so late in the season like we did (Late October), unless properly prepared. We did okay, but kept an eye on the forecast the entire month before leaving. We prepared for 47 degree weather as the low, but it got down to 34 degrees. Much lower than predicted. Think it had to do with being so close to the water, as opposed to the town of CAMP VERDE, and the fact that the recent monsoons still left many areas (especially by the river) extremely wet and muddy. We couldn't even get close to the river without walking thru about 30 feet of mud. Almost slipped about a dozen times. Would highly recommend going before the monsoons or weeks after to let it dry out. Thanks Again GENE!

I had a fun visit here. Lots of animal petting - goats, pigs, horses, sheep and some very friendly dogs. You definitely get the farm vibe. I heard coyotes at night and roosters in the morning. Expect some noise, but in a good way. Conveniently close to Sedona and the perfect way to get away from the crowds. Holly is super friendly too.

Gary and Daren are living their dream and it shows in every detail. The bathroom and showers were clean and stocked, the coffee selection was outstanding, they have everything you need to good a good meal and we even told him the ladder golf needed fixing and he had it fixed within hours. I literally didn’t want to leave. It’s an absolutely magical here and I feel grateful I was able to experience all this beauty. Also the creek was beautiful and refreshing! We’ll definitely be back!

Love love love!! This was one of the best campsites I’ve managed to stay at during my travels. Lovely hosts, great bathroom with overhead shower, clean toilets, a super cool communal room with coffee and cooled water cooler, along with cooking materials for the onsite grill. Lots of cool trails, fauna and flora plus tons of hummingbirds and other wildlife to see. The creek was pretty and everything was very peaceful and quiet. The gravel roads to get there were totally worth every minute. Thanks so much Gary and Daren! I’ll be back here next time I’m in Sedona 🩷

We had a blast at Secret Springs, lovely maintained land and tons of amenities. We came from a long hike in Grand Canyon and got fully recharged on the land of Gary and Daren. Next morning we had tons of fun in the creek with the canoes and the natural water swimming. Highly recommended stay!

Pretty well kept. Porta potties were clean which I dont see often so that was awesome. Sites are pretty, you get to wake up to nearby farm animals which I liked. Overall good experience. Sites are dirt so if its rainy would be muddy but should be fine as long you choose a elevated spot for your tent so gravel would make these Sites perfect but still a good experience and safe area so worth a stay imo

My wife and I loved camping at Mary’s place! She has got all the amenities you need and is very hospitable! The sites are spacious and the neighborhood is extremely peaceful. Although the lane back to her house is a bit rough, it is worth the trip…you just need to take it slow. It is great location! Far enough away from the crowds to be extremely peaceful, but close enough that you can be there within a quarter of an hour. I would definitely stay here again! Thanks Mary!

The host, Clifford, what a great, friendly, thoughtful, smart and kind Dude!! (Some say he's the Dudeist) I needed a spot on a cross country road trip but would TOTALLY come back here when I just wanna fly solo for a bit This campout, my 1st here, felt like my own private burning man. I just allowed a couple days to enjoy my hammock and to choose to let the sound of the wind blow any thoughts out out out .....BuhBye. Bring a little cash for the 24/7 store.
