Jennifer is a great host and the property is beautiful. Highly recommend!
I was in town for work but decided to tent camp instead of stay in a hotel to get away a little bit. Jennifer found a flat secluded spot for me to set up, and assured me to reach out if I needed anything. The gated property is quiet and clean, and being close to the coast brought a nice breeze so bugs were not an issue. Once you enter, you forget you are only 10 minutes from Walmart and South Padre Island Drive. Perfect spot for tent/van/RV camping.

I dry camped at a ranch among cows facing a good size pond. It was amazing ! Cows run free at this private ranch and surrounding my campsite, no fresh dung on the grass (dry ones here and there), no flies and no farm smell. A gentle wind at a good flat grassy area, look out for the Texas fire ants, bring pecaridin sprayed long socks. Your amazing host Jennifer will greet you. I met the nicest host ever! In the evening she invited me to feed the animals: beautiful highland cows from Scotland, goats, alpacas and so many other animals. I enjoyed my visit very much. Thank you so much. I recommend this place ! There is a small air field nearby - I watched a biplane practice touch and go. I will return here and read and do crafts for a couple of nights. I did see someone on a kayak.

Stretching for more than 70 miles along the Gulf of Mexico, the Padre Island National Seashore is a wild slice of coastal paradise. Head to the oceanside beaches to hit the surf, cool off with a swim, and explore off-road by 4WD, or enjoy boating, kayaking, and windsurfing along the Laguna Madre. Pack your binoculars along with your swimsuit, as this barrier island is a birdwatching hotspot with more than 380 species to spot, as well as a nesting ground for sea turtles. Campers can choose from the park's two seafront campgrounds or enjoy primitive camping right on the beach.
Notable campgrounds
- Best for ocean views: Malaquite Campground has 48 RV and tent sites with basic facilities on the Atlantic seafront.
- Best for water activities: Bird Island Basin has RV and tent camping sites with easy access to the boat launch and the waters of the Laguna Madre.
- Best for beach camping: South Beach Primitive Camping has 60 miles of shoreline where you can pitch your tent or park your camper (4WD recommended) right on the beach.
Tips for snagging a campsite
- All campsites at Padre Island National Seashore are first-come, first-served only—no reservations are accepted.
- Camping permits are required for all sites, including primitive camping, and are available from the self-serve kiosks at the campground entrances.
- Some of the more popular campsites can fill up fast, especially on summer and holiday weekends, so plan an early morning arrival to snag the best spots.
When to go
With long, balmy summers and mild winters, Padre Island National Seashore is a four-season destination with year-round camping. Prepare for high humidity through the summer months—temperatures can reach 95°F. The best time for birding is from late fall through early spring, when thousands of seabirds migrate through the park, but wildlife enthusiasts will also want to stop by in summer (from mid-June through August) when sea turtle hatchling releases take place.
Know before you go
- Padre Island National Seashore is 35 miles southeast of Corpus Christi, about a 45-minute drive away crossing the JFK Causeway.
- The seashore requires an admission fee, and camping fees also apply. Fishing and boat ramp permits are required.
- Park facilities include a visitor center, boat ramp, restrooms, picnic areas, and a dump station. The park has no electric hookups, and the closest gas station and grocery stores are about 12 miles from the park entrance. Cell phone service is patchy throughout the park.
- There are accessible campsites, picnic areas, and restrooms at Padre Island. Beach wheelchairs are also available for free use.

had an amazing time at the campground it was really hot but with a breeze, windy nights but nothing too bad. Make sure to put your tent far enough back because mine was a little to close to the gravel parking space and I couldn't get the stakes into the gravel ground. They take cards now!! Its $10 to get into the park with a daily pass or $25 for a weekly pass.

We camped here March and June of 2017. We enjoyed our stay both times. The facilities are clean, the shower and restroom were very convenient.
The best thing about this site is the sunrise and moonrise views. Watching a fullmoon rise here is spectacular.
We came here primarily for the sea turtle release, although there weren’t many people at the campsite/beach since it’s not a huge campsite. A lot of people come for the baby sea turtle release when it happens at 6:45 AM. The release is worth it for sure.
We’d definitely come back.

We visited here on 4/27/17 (before the hurricane)
There is free beach camping south of the established campground (After you pay the park fee, that is). Much less crowded and you have access to the whole beach. Stop in the visitor center to get the park pass and instructions on how to get there. The established campgrounds were quite packed when we visited.
We very much enjoyed the beach here an the sunrise from this side of the island can't be missed. Salt and sand everywhere.

Who knew Texas beaches could look like this! Came down from Fort Worth on a whim and fell in love with this place. Malaquite campground was full but no worries, south beach was exactly what I needed.
Easy to drive out and snag a spot even with a non 4WD vehicle ( I have a Nissan cube).
You have a gorgeous front row seat to the ocean no matter where you settle. It can get pretty windy so be sure to secure all your gear, and maybe leave your tent fly off to check out the crazy awesome view of the night sky while you fall asleep to the sound of the waves

We ADORED this National Seashore.
A couple of friends and I tent camped here over Spring Break. Besides the weather being a little chilly and mostly overcast, we had such a good time.
The primitive camp sites along South Beach are completely free, you just drive down until you see a place to call home for the next few nights and set up camp.
One of my favorite things about this camp site/beach was that it never got crowded the whole time we were there. And even with the people who were there, it was very quiet.
If you are looking for a place to camp on the beach, this is seriously it.
(side note: showers in the visitor center are at subarctic freezing temperatures...)
