"Big Blue" sits atop a lawn covered hill on the shore of the Cobequid Bay. A grove of fir and pine trees offer a sense of woodland solitude and fairies. The energy is magical.
You can enjoy a front row seat or amble down over the lawn to sit on the end of the public wharf to watch the tidal bore squeeze into the mouth of the Shubenacadie River. It won't be long and you can marvel at the force of the water as it turns and begins to pour back toward the Bay of Fundy.
Walk across the dyke to reach the oldest continually operating general store in North America - Frieze and Roy. Beyond the Wharf, a locally stocked craft shop borders us on the easterly side of the lawn. Next to it you will find Dawson Dowel Picnic Park, a playground and basketball court.
On the westerly side of the driveway you there is a marsh area. The remnants of the shipyard where the WD Lawrence was built in the 1800's can be seen poking through the sand on the beach directly in front of the marsh. At low tide you can walk for miles in a westerly direction. Always be Tide Aware!
Across the road from the marsh is the residence of WD Lawrence himself. It is a provincial museum. Directly across from Big Blue is a Ducks Unlimited pond. The sound of the geese and ducks can be heard 24 hours a day! There is a path that circumvents most of the pond. Adjacent to the Lawrence House parking lot there is an observatory where you can linger and watch the shenanigans of the occasional muskrat or possibly a beaver.
The washrooms are accessed through a side door on the verandah of the main house. There are three showers and three toilets. If happen to be missing your "workout" there is a treadmill and exercise bike available to use.
Outdoor fire regulations are strictly adhered to. There is a BBQ available for a small fee.

This was one of the original homesteads in the Margarees. There was an old sawmill on site which was used to build the house and barn. It was sold to a man who started renovations for a summer house but ended up listing it for sale. I purchased it and completely renovated the 100-year-old house. Shortly after, my brother and I started an outfitting company with no plan of building a campground, but in 2017 we saw a great opportunity for building something unique. We wanted to keep a backwoods camping feel, but yet create it around a hostel-inspired environment. We launched June 1, 2018 and are in full swing now. Extraordinary in every way. The site has so much to offer - great outdoor kitchen set up with grill, propane 4 burner cook top, running water…. Hot water outdoor shower, bathroom with flush toilet. Platform that you can pull your trailer right up to, or set your tent up on. Campfire area with wood, hammock, picnic table, screen room with chairs and small table…. AND it all looks out on one of the loveliest and most peaceful harbors I’ve experienced. Oh, and I forgot to mention a launch if you’re there to kayak! Jeffrey and his family are fabulous hosts. Friendly, but honor your privacy as well. Jeffrey is a great resource on the area, the islands, and local history. This was our 1st HipCamp experience, what a great start! We did not want to leave!

Sally’s is as delightful as it looks in pictures! The pod we stayed in was clean, comfortable and charming, and well-stocked. We only stayed briefly so I didn’t explore the shared facilities much but washrooms and showers were clean and pleasant. Overall really enjoyed our stay and hope to stay longer next time!

Janis and Brooks have an incredible off-the-grid place tucked away in central Cape Breton, and they provide such warm hospitality. We camped in an open meadow, with access to a great outhouse, propane-heated outdoor shower, and a bit of shelter in the barn if/when the outdoors was just too much. If you're interested in artisanal farming and food sovereignty, these folks are experts and applying what they've learned over the years and around the world to this beautiful land here. Heads up that it is a bit of a trek to reach their place - the last 3 km are a dirt road, but it's pretty well maintained (we had no issues with our SUV and teardrop camper). A local highlight for us was Big Spruce Brewing Co, about 15 minutes from Janis' place - great spot to hang out and enjoy some tasty suds!

We had a great time at the Owls Nest-The Perch. Unfortunately we didn’t have the best weather for the majority of our stay but we made the best of it….went fishing and with the perch had a dry area to enjoy!!! Would highly recommend recommend 5/5

We loved this well equipped and spacious cabin, only a short drive from Halifax! Arriving after dark was tough so I’d recommend arriving while it’s still light out. There is no electricity but the lanterns provided worked great.

We brought our camper and parked it near the barn, mostly just fir sleeping during our swim competition in Windsor. Although we weren't around much it was a nice view to wake up to and was nice to have somewhere to run around with the kids and a place to cook and eat. The available bathroom, shower and laundry was a nice luxury, although we didn't make much use. We appreciated the flexibility to leave our camper there on checkout day until competition events finished. Nicely groomed lawn for tenting (most of it a but sloped), picnic table, garbages, firepit, etc was just as described.

Friendliest staff! Well appointed. The tent sites are a bit on the smaller size, but quite suitable. Upon checkin in, they suggested a tent site offering more shade which was really nice to be amongst trees.
Lots of activities and great location near Lunenburg.
One improvement I would suggest, put more gravel on roads and pathways to bathrooms as some rocks are sticking out and make tripping hazard, specially at night,

Beautiful spot to explore 100 Wild Islands. Jeffery has thought of everything for a glamping get-away, with a beautiful hilltop view of the islands. The amenities are well thought-out and the access to boat launch is very convenient. It was lovely being able to have a campfire while overlooking the sunset over the water.
p.s. Note that there are two camping sites fairly close together and in full view/sound of each other.

Gloria has such a unique place, right on a bluff overlooking the confluence of Shubenecadie River and the Bay of Fundy. Our teardrop camper set up perfectly on a flat spot behind her house, and we enjoyed a day of watching the tide come and go. It's also a good launching place to view the tides at narrow spots nearby, or to explore other aspects of this beautiful area. We also enjoyed walking the dyke from Gloria's house to Frieze and Roy, the oldest general store in Canada, where we had a delightful meal at the Mud Slide Cafe.
