Kelly's Lookout

2 sites · RVs, Tents50 acres · Thoona, VIC
We have 50 acres of undulating hills currently under sheep grazing and an olive farm. Features include a hill with 300 degree views of surrounding farmland and includes a distant view of Mt Bulla on a clear day (beautifully snowcapped in winter). The Warby Ranges are 6km away as a northern view backdrop. Picture-perfect views. Please bring your own toilet and take everything with you that you bring - no rubbish permitted.A campsite is just $28.00 with up to 4 x people thereafter a  $7.00 per person per night fee applies. Currently, each site enjoys exclusive use and can host up to 50 plus campers. This means your group can stay at each site you book and no one else .I want you to enjoy the peace and tranquility my  open spaces can provide while a remnant stand of eucalypts gives some privacy and shade.( Site 1 , "Above the Olives" ) is a cleared level site (5 acres just for you) with excellent views and easy 2WD access. The whole farm consists of about 50 acres of undulating hills and gentle slopes currently under sheep grazing and olives. Features include a hill with 300-degree views of surrounding farmland and includes a distant view of Mt Buller " on a clear winter day (snowcapped in winter). Warby Ranges are 6km away as a northern view backdrop. And seasonal cropping in the surrounding valleys provides a mosaic of real country farming practices that constantly change with the seasons providing Picture-perfect views.( Site 2,  Kelly's Lookout ) offers 4WD easy access and dry weather 2WD, however it is not suitable for motor homes or caravans unless off-road modified. There are hilltop views and several campsites for you to choose from. I insist you do not camp directly under the well-established gum trees, as branches and tree uprootings are a fact of life in rural Australia and we want to avoid the Nargan and tree branch dangers where possible. Stay overnight or stay a week, there are many local attractions including the Winton car race track, rowing regattas, gliding and sky diving adventures, the Ned Kelly trail, wineries, olive farms, the famous Thoona Wheelie Bin Races, Lake Mocan bird sanctuary, horse riding opportunities or simply chill out and enjoy the kookaburras and an open fire (in season) .Ned Kelly - Have a beer in the local hotel rebuilt in 1888 on the location of a tent pub where he drank. Some of his surviving family would have drunk there after it was rebuilt to what it is now that is. This historic local pub is a brisk 5-minute walk away and say a "10 minutes coming back". Great meals, a cold beer and hearty fellowship await. Ned Kelly and his brothers and kin roamed this locality and some relatives still live in the greater area around. Soak up the vista they lived in and would have seen. Not much has changed in 100 years around here. Glenrowan is just 14 km away. The Campsites are located on Grassed areas interspersed with a few degrading and compacted mudstone outcrop terraces providing ideal camping spots.  A remnant stand of 40-60-year-old Redgums, apple boxes, and eucalypts provide mottled shade with some privacy. No firewood removal policy applies. Music playing needs to be sensitive to the environment, Site 2 affords a hill with a north-facing aspect. Downhill slightly an amphitheater will be hewn from a small disused gravel pit terrace area. Minimal site impact will create a half-sound shell envisaged ideal for outdoor plays and small festival gatherings. Music must be controlled and limited to reasonable hrs of duration by a booking arrangement and commitment to be responsible.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Plan ahead and arrive early, especially during peak seasons, to secure a spot at the popular Wenhams Camp or Killawarra Forest Camp.
  • For dispersed bush camping, be prepared to be flexible with your location as these sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Keep an eye on the weather forecast and park conditions to ensure accessibility, especially if you're planning to camp in more remote areas.
  • Explore nearby camping options if the park's campgrounds are full, ensuring you have a backup plan for your adventure.

The best time to visit Warby-Ovens National Park is during spring and autumn, when the weather is mild and the natural beauty is at its peak. Summer offers a great escape along the Ovens River, but be prepared for higher temperatures. Winter provides stunning views of snow-capped peaks, ideal for brisk bushwalking.

Know before you go

  • Check for any park closures or reported issues before your visit, especially during extreme weather conditions.
  • Be aware of the park's conservation efforts; respect the natural habitat and wildlife by staying on designated tracks.
  • Mobile phone reception can be patchy; plan accordingly and inform someone of your itinerary.
  • Bring your own firewood and drinking water, as the campgrounds are unpowered and facilities are limited.
  • For safety, avoid camping under large trees and be cautious of wildlife, including snakes, especially in warmer months.
