Just 45 minutes north of Port Macquarie and 1 hour south of Coffs Harbour. Please arrive before dark, or advise arrival time if not possible . You must be fully self contained, there are no facilities. Please no tents or swags. Enjoy a beautiful campsite near a large dam, watch the ducks, rosellas, cranes, herons and the occasional Jabiru, feed and nest in the trees. A great spot for bird watching. Pick your own spot, maybe near one of the fire braziers, but not directly under the trees if windy. No livestock on property but we have visiting kangaroos, tortoises, green frogs, and eels in the dam if you want to fish for them. Mid Coast Flying operate a private 800 metre airstrip on the property, and Trial Instructional Flights (TIFS) are available, for $150 for 45 minutes. Please speak to Ross when you arrive. You can pick your own site. Unfortunately we may have to close after torrential rain events. We are also pet friendly, however there are no bins, so please pick up after your pets in the camping area. Water is available near the hangar as you drive in.

Great location near Hat Head and South West Rocks This lovely 4 acre camping spot is situated at Kinchela on the tidal Kinchela Creek which runs directly into the mighty Macleay river. Please note that in very wet weather , being riverside camping, the sites can be unsuitable for caravans and camper vans . Please enquire by message with us to verify current conditions. We endeavour to accomodate you but cannot predict the weather. Tent sites usually okay at any time . You can fish , kayak, paddle board, bring the tinny or just relax and enjoy the water view and surrounding farmland. A few shade trees and quiet surroundings makes this the perfect spot for your next getaway. Fire baskets available. Conveniently located only a 5 minute drive to Gladstone shops and hotel. There is a tap and hose (town water) on site. NOTE This is not available for vehicle washing, cleaning fish or filling large tanks. No emptying /cleaning of portable toilets please. PLEASE NOTE Campers must be equipped with their own toilet facilities , absolutely no exceptions. People abusing this rule will be asked to leave. We like our riverbank to be pristine and enjoyable for everyone. Thank you. Safe surroundings for solo travellers. We live opposite campground if assistance is required. Enjoyable fishing spot here, however no crab pots thank you. Our lovely waterway is recovering from a major flood. Last Minute Bookings Welcome ONLY subject to availability and not in holiday period. We had such a peaceful, relaxing stay. There were only 1-2 other campers so we had the place to ourselves essentially . . Sharing with Wallabies and resident birdlife. The facilities are thorough and very comfortable. Clean, with hot water. The camp kitchen is well stocked. Julie is generous with sharing her space, private features, garden etc, and the Billabong is beautiful. We could’ve stayed there forever!

Katie met us at the gate. She was very friendly and offered her pool to the kids. There is a toilet at the back of the garage and the wide open paddock. Molly (Katie's dog) was an absolute hit with the kids! She is super friendly and playful. The scenery is quite beautiful too - rolling hills on the background, so tranquil. I would definitely recommend Katie's farm for family with kids.

We were absolutely stoked with our 3-night stay at Way Way Getaway!! It offered a "proper" bush experience—we made friends with the trees and even rode out a staggering thunderstorm—all with the benefit of total peace of mind, knowing we’re safe. Camping on this site really felt like home! The property is the perfect balance of nature and convenience, located just a stone's throw from Scott’s Head for incredible cafes, amenities, natures walks and stunning surf beaches. We stayed on Site 6 with our Nissan Patrol and a double-fold camper trailer; access was easy and manoeuvring it was a breeze. Sam is a super helpful and relaxed host. Since the other sites weren't busy, he was extremely accommodating and let us pay a bit extra to use the shower and toilet (a couple of mins walk from site 6). Speaking of which, it was hands down the cleanest composting/bush toilet we’ve ever used—a very impressive and sustainable setup! We generally had the best time ever and will definitely be coming back again! Thanks, Sam, you total legend!

We had a lovely one night stay, very peaceful and beautiful property. With only 3 sites its spaced out very well and very private but we were lucky to have it all to ourselves with no other campers - but did get to share it with Annie and Peter’s gorgeous welsh horses including 2 month old Betty! Also got to meet Ned and Patrick, the working collies. Our spot on the river was magic. Even a few showers of rain didn’t dampen the mood. We highly recommend this beautiful spot, only 10mins from Hat Head. Thanks Annie and Peter!

Lucy’s place was incredible. The facilities were so clean and well thought out. the hot shower was amazing after swimming in the lake, and having the sauna was such a luxury touch. About

Hidden along the borders of Queensland in New England, Budelah Nature Reserve tempts intrepid hikers with its untamed landscapes and wildlife. Venture out along unmarked trails, hike through Coolibah-black box woodlands, or enjoy bird-watching along the creeks. The only way to explore the reserve is on foot, and bush-walkers have the chance to spot rare swamp wallabies, red and eastern grey kangaroos, barking owls, and glossy black cockatoos. Camping isn’t permitted in the reserve, but campers will find options in Mungindi.

When to go

The weather can be extreme in the Budelah Nature Reserve, so plan your visit accordingly. Summer (December through January) sees daily temperatures over 30°C (86°F), and the dry heat can make hiking a challenge—plan an early morning or late afternoon visit to avoid the hottest parts of the day. Winter is milder, with daytime temperatures hovering around 20°C (68°F), but floods are common and may limit access to the reserve.

Know before you go

  • Budelah Nature Reserve is located 40 kilometres northeast of Mungindi, in northern NSW, along the Queensland border. It’s about a 30-minute drive from town, and there are no public transport options.
  • Access to the reserve is limited to hikers, and it’s recommended to contact the park ranger prior to your visit.
  • There are no facilities at the reserve, so bring all your hiking gear, food, and water with you.
