Camp 437 in the Sturgeon Valley

5 sites · RVs, Tents40 acres · Vanderbilt, MI
We book only 2 sites at a time on our 40 acre property so you can enjoy a more secluded experience in the woods. Our property is undeveloped, so you will need to bring drinking water, but there's no need to worry about finding firewood before your arrive as we supply you with a free bundle that is waiting for you when you get here! There are 1 1/2 miles of marked, wooded trails that will guide you to the river's edge where you can enjoy the beauty and wildlife along the West Branch of the Sturgeon River. It will feel as if you are in the middle of nowhere, yet the convenience of the small town of Vanderbilt is just three miles away. We are located just three miles off of I-75. The larger town of Gaylord is only a 15 minute drive south. There's lots to do here in beautiful Northern Michigan! Only a few miles from our camp you can go for a swim at Thumb Lake Park or take a bike ride along the North Central State Trail in Vanderbilt. Drive 15 minutes north and you can canoe or kayak the main branch of the Sturgeon River in Wolverine. There are many great hiking trails in the Pigeon River State Forest and the North Country National Scenic Trail is only 6 miles away. This 40 acre parcel has been in our family since the 1950s. My grandparents originally designated it as a tree farm and planted and harvested lumber from it. As a boy scout leader, my grandfather hosted many boy scout troops here and even hosted a boy scout Jamboree in the 1970s. Back then the property was referred to as the "Tree Farm", but after my husband John and I inherited it in 2014 we started calling it Camp 437. Before we inherited the property we spent time camping there and building trails. One of the trails we built was named the "Burns Trail" in honor of my grandparents. Since we acquired the property we have added a one mile loop that circles the perimeter of the property, and a total of about 1 1/2 miles of trail.

Surrounded by 1,000s of acres of state land just across the street, this is the perfect location for your outdoor getaway! There are dozens of amazing lakes nearby, too! There is no shortage of outdoor activities to do when you're staying at the Kozy Kabin! You'll have full access to the entire Kozy Kabin, minus the utility closet in the bathroom. If there is any sign of riding in the yard, there will be an additional charge to your stay to repair the lawn. Other things to note: We do not currently have WiFi at the Kozy Kabin, but you are able to hook up the TV to a hotspot to use the smart TV/roku features. Most cell providers get good service here. If there are any signs of smoking inside there will be an additional cleaning charge to your stay. Dogs are always welcome, but please clean up after them. The best camping near Onaway State Park guide

Overview

About

Pretty soon you’ll be on-the-way to a land of serenity and wilderness. Onaway State Park is home to Black Lake. This spot is known for its excellent beach and rugged vibes. There are massive rock out-croppings and a boat-load of various species of trees as you hike the three mile nature trail. To cool down, swim in the gorgeous waters and let loose. The lake has access to a boat launch for your paddle boat or rainbow flotation device (hey, no judgment!). For overnight stays, rent the camper cabin or set up camp in the modern campsites. Just ten miles outside of the park, Ocqueoc Falls, the largest waterfall in the lower Peninsula of Michigan endlessly pours and roars. One night in Onaway, and you may never want to be on your way home.

When to go

The ideal time to visit Onaway State Park is during the summer months, from June to August, when the weather is warm and the park is in full bloom. Fall also offers a spectacular display of colors, making September to October a picturesque time to visit. Winter can be harsh, so it's less ideal for those not prepared for snowy adventures.

Know before you go

  • Ensure you have a Recreation Passport for park entry, as it's required for all visitors.
  • Check trail conditions and weather forecasts before your visit to pack appropriately.
  • Remember to bring water and snacks, as options may be limited within the park.
  • Be mindful of park wildlife; observe from a distance and do not feed the animals.
  • For a smooth visit, familiarize yourself with park rules and regulations available on the official website.
