This is the view across our field to our neighbor. We just love the red barn. It seems to complete the farm picture.

Tobeyland
3 sites · Lodging21 acres · MOWe are just off I-29 in northwest Missouri between St. Joseph and Platte City. This tiny cabin is across the driveway from our house on flat ground. Our property is 21 acres and includes a yard of 6 acres and fields (alternating corn and soy beans) and a wooded area. There is a fishing pond down the hill behind our house. There is also a fire pit to the left (north) of the cabin. Around the fire pit are swings and benches. We call this area Geriatric Park. It used to be a playground for our grandkids, but when they outgrew it we adults took it over! We have a gravel driveway which services our house and the cabin. You park next to the cabin. There is a kitchenette with the necessary essentials and a small bath with a shower and toilet. There is also heat and AC. If you love nature and want to relax, walk in the fresh air, or even be put to work, just let us know. We want your stay here to be enjoyable and hope you look forward to coming back! We are in the country not too far from the Pigeon Hill firing range, so you may hear gunfire from there or the neighbor's target practicing. Nearby are several wineries, the McCormick Distillery in Weston MO, and historical St Joseph MO (where the Pony Express began and Jesse James ended), as well as several antique stores. Just a little further southwest is Leavenworth KS, which has a huge amount of history and more antiques, and Fort Leavenworth (the Army's Command and General Staff College (CGSC)). To the east is Jamesport MO, our local Amish colony. This is a farm. If the thought of a bug, spider web, or strand of hair makes you cringe, this probably isn't the place for you. The cabin is clean and sanitized between each visitor, but is not prepared for a forensic inspection. Thanks for understanding! Learn more about this land: This property was just a farm field when we bought it. We love how it is turning out and can't wait to share it with you. We have Pekin ducks. Pekins are the white ducks, like the Aflac duck, or like Donald Duck. They are bred for meat and eggs, so they are fat and cannot fly, so cannot be released into the wild. We keep them happily spoiled. We don't eat our ducks, but love the eggs when they decide to lay them. In the cabin is an informational book that tells about our rules, local restaurants, things to do, how to work the TV, microwave/air fryer combo, and hot plates. Our pond is fed by underground springs, so the water is very cold. We keep it stocked with 6 kinds of fish (blue gill, crappie, big mouth bass, small mouth bass, catfish and 1 carp). If you choose to fish, please don't keep the albino's or the carp (he keeps our pond clean). If others are dinner size, enjoy your fresh meal! The farmer behind us has cows, so you may see or hear them. We also see visiting deer and turkey on occasion. If you bring your pets, do not leave them outside alone. Being in the country, we have coyotes, bobcats, skunks and raccoons. None of those are pet friendly.

Jennifer G.’s Land
5 sites · RVs73 acres · Platte City, MOThe property was named after the Basswood trees that grow there; and the access street, Interurban Road, is so named for the Interurban Railway that ran in its place from 1913 to 1933, linking Kansas City with St. Joseph to the north. Horse lines dug the spring-fed Lakes at Basswood in the early 1930s, and the facilities functioned as a private fish hatchery from 1935 to 1945. Each lake was then stocked with a different type of fish. In 1979, former owners, Don and Betty Soper (thinking that Basswood would be their retirement home), purchased the property, then run-down and overgrown. The Sopers, who had previously owned two motels and an RV park, decided that retirement was still a long way off.Betty Soper, a history buff was excited about the idea transforming the property into a charming bed and breakfast inn, integrating the seclusion enjoyed by celebrities in days gone by with the Missouri friendliness that is appreciated by visitors today. On the other hand, Don Soper, quickly whittled out a large section of the estate for his own vision, that of a modern RV resort. They spent the next eight years restoring the lakes and 73 acres to the enchanting vacation spot it is today. The result, according to PEAK, “is a sampler of the best of Missouri country life: authentic, truly comfortable, unpretentious, but with every modern convenience.” Bing Crosby, Rudy Vallee, President Truman was a frequent visitor to Basswood as was Charley “O” Finley, the owner of the Kansas City A’s (later the Oakland A’s) and our most recent celebrity being Matthew McConaughey.

Selby Farm Horse Retirement

Hosts live on site and are good communicators via text or phone. Hosts can direct you to several local attractions and shopping options. Hosts are happy to take questions before, during, or after your stay. Narrative about Selby Farm: Selbys have lived on this 75 acre farm since 1990. Doug and Brenda are retired from teaching at nearby public schools. Our Farm is now dedicated to boarding retired horses for their owners. Feel free to review the Selby Farm Horse Retirement webpage if you are a horse fan. We encourage you to visit our business website where you will see more farm pictures, videos, and where you will learn more about us. We practice rotational grazing for the health of the horses and the health of our pastures. The horses live in a herd as they would in the wild. Basically, they are hanging out with their friends! They also get regular care and feed and so are VERY happy. You will see and probably interact with the horses if you wish. They are guaranteed to come closer if you have treats like carrots and apples slices. Our quiet county road used to be the main road along the river. A hundred years ago it was called "Shanty Road". The shacks that were along it housed workers that harvested food from farms in the river bottom. The only evidence of those shacks now is perrenial flowers growing in unusual places. The area is inhabited by professionals working in nearby towns and cities. In fact there are only five homes along our 1.5 mile section of Copps Chapel Road. The native Americans who used this area did so because of the great diversity of wildlife and availability of water. Also the view is amazing in all directions. Was using this ridge top encampment for security, or just because the view is so satisfying? The Missouri River is on the far side of the bottoms now, but has been very close historically. There is also a large spring flowing from a cave nearby. Witness the flint chips when you walk through our barn lot. You are likely to see a broken stone tool that once worked on by a native American. These river hills are composed of soils blown in from the end of the last ice age. Being near the river, erosion has cut down the surrounding area making the scenic topography associated with Missouri River valleys and river hills.

Retreat to the Country
3 sites · Lodging10 acres · Holts Summit, MOThis land has been asking to be shared. First it was swings and little things for the grandchildren and their friends. Then the Cabin by the pond began to welcome visitors. Soon the steep slope anchored a Yurt with a wrap-around deck that puts you up in the trees. Our gathering spot by the creek became a camp site. Recently the grandkids' Bunk House found its way in. Our Retreat is 10 acres, narrow, but 1/4 mile deep, stretching down a steep wooded slope to a creek - and up the other side to the top of a bluff.  It is only ten miles to Jefferson City but has a quiet and distant feel.
