The surrounding cabins provide hunters, fishers, hikers, bikers, skiers, and explorers of all stripes a clean, comfortable base from which to rest, recharge, and regroup. We were married at a nearby lake in 2011, and in 2018, we bought the property. Our family has been working tirelessly to restore and update it to provide an unforgettable experience for our guests. The cabin has heat, light, linens, dining area, fridge, cook stove, pots/pans/utensils, coffee maker, potable water in bottles with pump, TV (for watching DVDs), private outhouse, and access to fully-plumbed wash cabin May - September. We are surrounded by mountain wilderness in a beautiful, remote, and peaceful place that you'll have nearly all to yourself. We do not offer internet, so please plan accordingly for a great stay in this beautiful, scenic and wild part of Alaska (some cell carriers service with data approx. 10 miles down the road). We have most of life's essentials on-site, so don't hesitate to ask-- we want your stay to be as pleasant as possible.

Affordably priced at $75/night. You will be centrally situated in downtown McCarthy, a central hub in the community with shuttle access to Kennicott. The WMC campus is also near to McCarthy Creek, just out of the range of most of the town commotion. But please note that on weekends there are typically bands playing in downtown, in the open air, and the music can go on into later hours. Our primitive guest housing provides visitors with a low impact, affordable housing option centrally situated in the Kennicott-McCarthy valley.
Our guest housing is significantly less expensive than other local lodging, but please note that the WMC has limited resources, and we seek to run a minimalist and sustainable campus, as much as possible. The best way to reduce one’s footprint is simply to use less, so staying at our guest housing facilities is an effective exercise in sustainable travel lodging. You will get first hand experience in seeing our communal living situation where we utilize solar power, rainwater collection, and trash separation to reduce our footprint while also hosting science and art programs throughout the year and bringing community together.
Because this is a primitive lodging situation, please take note of the following:
There is no running water in the room.
There are no conventional shower/bathing facilities. We do have an outdoor shower stall where we use bucket showers (a 5 gallon bucket with a slow release valve) that you are welcome to! Shower stall faces Mccarthy creek and is built into a tree for a peaceful experience. Otherwise, we bathe in the Mccarthy swimming hole, a glacial pool a 15 minute walk from WMC with killer 360 mountain views.
We use outhouses, so there are no conventional flush toilets. We have plenty of TP stocked and an outdoor handwash sink.
You have access to kitchen areas, outside of our program hours. We have a beautiful 6 burner gas propane stove, and big kitchen loaded with spices, appliances, and lots of dishware. Guests are expected to do their own dishes please! We do have a small refrigerator and freezer and can set aside some space for personal items brought, please just let us know in advance to make shelf space!
We have a good solar system that generates plenty of solar-generated power for laptops, phones and other small personal electronics. So charging devices is no problem, but please note that you will not have an outlet in your room. We have power strips located in the classroom and library of the main building you are welcome to leave your devices to charge.
We also ask that you bring your own sheets/bedding to save on our resource use and support our efforts at a minimal footprint. We do not have the resource capacity (water and electricity) to do laundry at our facilities, so please bring a sheet and bedding/sleeping bag.
Also note that it is your responsibility to navigate to the Wrangell Mountains Center in downtown McCarthy. This can take some doing, and we are happy to provide tips and advice, but ultimately it is your responsibility to navigate to our facility and adequately prepare for the challenges of this remote area of Alaska. For example, there is no vehicle traffic in the town of McCarthy and all vehicle traffic ends at the Kennicott River, which is a 1 mile walk (or shuttle ride) from the Wrangell Mountains Center. There is a free shuttle in town that picks up from the footbridge and drops you right in front of WMC, and there is a 5 dollar shuttle that runs every hour as well. Please be prepared to leave your car parked across the river and carry your stuff in via shuttle!
In order to make the most of your time in this exceptional area, we recommend that you take a little extra time to research the area. WMC is located on the edge of town, so you will be able to walk on foot to the swimming hole or a restaurant, and we are happy to recommend hikes and walks in the area!

Salmon Grove- River Camp

We have large coin-operated showers, a handicap-friendly outhouse, dump station, water, tackle shop and awesome salmon fishing. Fishing for the famous Copper River Salmon is good right from camp. Enjoy a short hike to the nearby Copper River. You can expect most sites that are on the water to have limited privacy due to the popular location. If you are the type that likes the more secluded feel we also have tent sites set back from the water that are surrounded by trees and thick vegetation for a more private feel.

Uncle Nicolai's Mini RV Park
18 sites · Lodging, RVs, Tents10 acres · Copper Center, AKThis is a 10-acre property along the edge of the north bank of the Klutina River--a major king salmon-fishing stream that flows into the famous Copper River just one half mile downriver.
The property is intersected by a river dike that separates the riverside campsites from the large RV parking and the permanent structures, including the bar and overnight accommodations. Spaces on the north side of the dike have power & water hook-ups and access to WIFI. Spaces on the river side of the dike have no hookups. We limit RVs on that side to 26 feet or less. RV1 thru RV5 have the water & power hookups and accommodate the larger RVs.
Just to the east, across the Copper River, is a long-abandoned Native fishing village and the 12 million acre Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. Our property is conveniently located in driving time almost exactly halfway between Anchorage and McCarthy-Kennecott. It is about 3 1/2 hours in either direction.
At the Klutina you can charter a sight-seeing river boat or you can white-water raft from a point several miles up a historic trail that follows the river to its source--Klutina Lake and Klutina Glacier. You can obtain a visitors' license and fish here for salmon. You can also hike along the dike or numerous trails in the area.
Originally a bar & trailer court, the trailer spaces are now either budget rooms or RV parking & camping. Uniquely-Alaskan full-service bar with pool table & jukebox. We began with a few limited camping spots, then started adding cabins. A bunkhouse for larger groups is also available: Memorial to Labor Day.

While staying with us:
You'll have great views of the wrangle mountain range and the river itself. You'll have access on a spacious river bank to fish from camp, no need to hike anywhere. The eagles sit in the trees eager for the fishermen to get lucky and pose for pictures. We have fire rings and picnic tables at each site. We can accommodate large RVs to tents. showers, flushing toilet and laundry facility are located at the main office building; outhouses down by the river. Full service charters offered. Yes we provide all gear tackle bait etc. We offer rafting charters only, not on a jet boat. We get off and fish at the hot spots on the way down the river. It is a 24mi float down one of the fastest sport fishing rivers in America. We target multiple species and can customize your charter accordingly. In the river we have King Salmon available 1 July - 10 August. Sockeye salmon from June - September. Trout, Grayling, Dolly Varden and other smaller species able to be targeted throughout the year.

Learn more about this land:Welcome to the Gulkana River Cabin!Nicely furnished rustic cabin nestled among large spruce trees. Located near the Gulkana River Bridge (12 miles north of Glennallen). Cabin is also located just 8 miles from the historic Gakona Roadhouse and the Copper River. Beautiful views of the magnificent Wrangell Mountains abound in the area. Hipcampers will have access to all areas of the cabin and surroundings. The cabin is secluded and has a south facing view.This is a remote cabin (vehicle accessible) and directions/check-in are provided by phone once booking is complete. There is no running water, electricity, or WIFI, and toilet facilities are provided by an outhouse. Guests are encouraged tp bring their own water. It is preferred that Hipcampers bring their own sleeping bags, but clean linens and sleeping bags are provided if needed. Cabin does have a propane cooking stove, battery powered lighting, a wood stove/firewood, and kitchen supplies (pots, pans, dishes, silverware). There is excellent cell phone service with AT&T and GCI. The "Award Winning" comfortable upstairs king bed is accessed by a factory made ladder as shown in the photographs. This ladder may be difficult for elderly or handicapped persons to climb. No showers are available at the cabin, but may be available the Gakona Lodge and Caribou Hotel in Glennallen. This place is designed for the person who enjoys a rustic, natural, pleasant, peaceful setting, or who just wants a place to crash while on the road. It is available at an economical price for those who are willing to sacrifice a few amenities. Most guests love it. Lots of mosquitoes in the area during the first part of the summer. It is requested that guests leave the cabin in a clean, tidy condition when they depart for the next guests since nobody is available on site. If You Are Looking For A True Alaskan Experience, this is it!! I, personally, come here occasionally to unwind! Check in is by phone. The cabin is 1/3 mile from the highway. Road is not plowed in the winter.Again. guests are required to clean the cabin when they leave and leave it in good condition for the next guests since there is no on-site person.
