The best camping near Malanda

·

To local farmers, Malanda is known as the “dairy capital” of Northern Queensland, but this small agricultural town has more to offer than milk. Naturally, a visit to the Malanda Dairy Centre should be at the top of your to-do list, but once you’ve sampled the town’s lifeblood, head down to Malanda Falls to cool off with a swim or hike to waterfalls and crater lakes at nearby Mt Hypipamee National Park. For bigger adventures, the Tully Gorge National Park and Wooroonooran National Park are within easy day-trip distance. Part of the UNESCO World Heritage Wet Tropics region, both parks boast scenic rainforest trails with spectacular wildlife-watching opportunities and a variety of options for camping. Alternatively, campers can choose from several campgrounds and Hipcamps around Malanda or check into the town’s caravan park, which has spacious powered and unpowered sites, as well as cabin rentals.

Flaggy Creek Caravan/Camping

6. Flaggy Creek Caravan/Camping

(148)
22km from Malanda · 6 sites · Tents, RVs
Flaggy Creek Caravan Camp is situated within a 260 acre rural property set aside for wildlife aiming to offer a peaceful and relaxing place to escape the daily grind. Please read this description to the end to make sure our campsites are right for you (click show more). Our Hipcamp, (owners on site), is small scale to minimise environmental impact with six sites spaced well apart for privacy with each site catering for up to two adult guests only (18+) and one vehicle. (No pets because of wildlife). Solo travelers are encouraged to book, many who have commented how much they enjoyed staying, not feeling overwhelmed by large groups or too isolated. If you are booking for others please let them know they will need to set up at their booked site. Please do not invite additional guests to enter the property. You will need to be fully self-contained: own toilet, drinking water, shower. Our Hipcamp is situated in a cool climate, away from the humidity of the coast. A highlight is beautiful permanent Flaggy Creek which meanders its way through the property for approximately 1 km and is habitat to platypus, turtles and an abundance of bird life (we are close to an ebird hotspot) with towering blue and rose gums. Take a dip on a hot day in one of several water holes including a large lagoon adjacent a mini waterfall surrounded by beautiful she-oaks. There are walks on mowed tracks around the property (look for large eastern grey kangaroos in the top paddock) including along a dam wall where you might spot herons or rainbow bee eaters (seasonally) and we can give you directions to a fire-trail to hike up to the Bluff. Herberton (10 mins) also has many excellent walking trails. All camp sites have their own fire pit (local conditions and/or state fire ban season permitting). We sell large crates of split firewood for $20 or you can collect your own. Please do not bring firewood for biosecurity reasons. During the wet season (December-April) we recommend 4WD to access the property as there is a concrete causeway creek crossing and on rare occasions this can become impassable with an extreme amount of rain but does go down very quickly once rain has eased. Please take care and go slowly on unsealed roads. Please ask for permission to fly drones.

If you require power, please visit our website for your booking. Check your inbox for your pre-arrival email, which will contain details for your self check-in. Keen for a budget-friendly alternative to traditional van parks? Welcome to Highleigh Farm – a relaxed, family and pet friendly campground tucked at the base of the stunning Walsh’s Pyramid. Once just a cane paddock, this beaut patch has been lovingly brought to life with over 700 native trees planted, it’s now a little bush oasis – full of native birds, bush tucker, and good vibes. Just a cruisy 20-minute drive from the Cairns CBD, Highleigh Farm is the perfect launch pad to explore the region. We’ve got roomy, grassed sites (yep, we keep ’em green year-round thanks to irrigation), friendly chooks and guinea fowl strutting about the gardens, and horses always keen for a scratch and a yarn. There’s a mini pump track for the ankle-biters, a big shady communal area with a BBQ shelter, firepit, and plenty of open space for kids to run wild and your furry mates to stretch their legs. The whole joint’s securely fenced and gated, so you can kick back with peace of mind. Our big-rig-friendly sites come with individual power and water outlets, but if you’re more the off-grid type, you can book an unpowered site too. Either way, there’s plenty of space to spread out and soak in the serenity. Heads up: We don’t have toilets or showers onsite, so you’ll need to be fully self-contained. But don’t stress – the nearest dump point is just around the corner at Greenpatch Campground.
