The best camping near McLain State Park guide

Overview

About

Okay, who else is crushin’ on the lighthouse at McLain State Park? Spend one sunset at this spot and we know you’ll be hooked too. Don’t worry, there’s more to love about this Lake Superior-abutting park than just the lighthouse: it’s a great place to cast a rod, beachcomb, windsurf, and experience inland-esque activities like berry pickin’, rock hounding, and hunting. We have some pretty serious doubts that you’ll get bored on the grounds of this great park, but we also wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to visit the ghost towns and abandoned shaft houses at one of the neighboring towns of Calumet and Hancock. When you come back, campsites and cabins will be waiting for you—and, so will the view of that lighthouse. Just sayin’.

When to go

The ideal time to visit McLain State Park is during the summer months, from June to August, when the weather is warm and the park is in full bloom. Fall also offers a spectacular display of colors, making September and October great months for a visit. Winters can be harsh with heavy snowfall, potentially limiting access to certain areas of the park.

Know before you go

  • Ensure you have a Recreation Passport for park entry, as it's required for all visitors.
  • Check the weather forecast before your trip, as conditions can change rapidly.
  • Wear appropriate footwear for hiking, as trails may have uneven terrain.
  • Be mindful of park wildlife; observe from a distance and do not feed the animals.
  • Remember to pack out all your trash to keep the park pristine for others to enjoy.
