Daniel Boone—you might have heard of the guy. You know, that American folk hero who pioneered his way into what is now the Kentucky wilderness? Well, the rugged Daniel Boone National Forest is the land through which his explorations brought him. Imagine knowing nothing about a place and stumbling upon the lush forested slopes, steep sandstone cliffs, and narrow ravines that characterize this part of the Appalachian Mountains.

If you’re visiting this area for the first time, you’ll get a little taste of what Boone must have felt. These dense woods are still ripe for exploring and people travel here from all over the world for the forest’s amazing outdoor recreational opportunities. Especially worthy of note is the rock climbing in the Red River Gorge, which is quite possibly the best roped climbing in the States, and easily world-class. Whether you come here to swing on ropes, boat down rivers, hunt, hike, or fish, Daniel Boone would be proud.
