A short jot from Arapahoe County, this 4,000-acre oasis is a must-do for any outdoorsmen (or women) who finds themselves in Colorado. Sublime horseback riding opportunities, hiking and biking trails, cross-country skiing trails, and water sporting in the 880-acre reservoir all exist within the park. No matter what activity you choose to take up, you’ll be treated with views of flora and wildlife, all complemented by view sheds of the majestic Rocky Mountains in the background.
Fan of model planes and pups? This park also boasts both a leashed and unleashed dog parks and a model plane flying field within the park’s grounds. A shooting range, known as the Family Shooting Center, can also be visited by those who wish to hit very literal bullseyes.
For those who are looking for an overnight experience under the Colorado sky, pitch a tent or drive in the RV to one of the park’s 130-plus campsites, with 101 of them offering full hook-ups. However, this park is notoriously busy year-round and many of the first-come, first-serve sites are taken before lunch comes around. Group picnic areas, too, are sprinkled throughout the park. Early bird gets the proverbial worm—and, in this case, a solid campsite.
While we’d have no problem recommending this park for year-round camping or hiking outings an autumn getaway here will yield breathtaking photos.
