Head out of San Louis Valley in any direction and you'll hit impressive camping options before long. With the Great Sand Dunes to the east, San Isabel National Forest to the north, and the Rio Grande National Forest to the west, you can't go wrong. Camp beside the tallest dunes in the nation for unbeatable views. Take in the snow-peaked mountains and golden hills of sand from the comfort of your campsite, or spend the day wandering up the dunes and hiking along the creeks. Camp at the base of the nearby Sangre de Cristo Mountains for hiking and fishing galore, or take the plunge and head deep into the Rio Grande National Forest for secluded camping in the densely wooded hills, plus plenty of roaring creeks and tranquil ponds. Rest in the shade of the cottonwoods, junipers or aspen trees, or hike the mountain trails until it's time to watch the sun set over the snowy peaks. From the fertile, rolling valley to the high ring of hills that encompasses the Alamosa region, it's no surprise that indigenous communities have settled this region of Colorado for thousands of years. Grab the gear and find some wilderness of your own.
